Horace Tapscott important program of reissue

Nimbus West records have started a big program of issuing unpublished recordings from Horace Tapscott’s Pan African Peoples arkestra. A total of 11 cd mostly double will cover one concert from 1978 and ten from 1979. All the concerts were done at the Immanuel United Church of Christ (I.U.C.C) where Horace Tapscott managed a program of support to the black musicians around the Los Angeles community. Unfortunately the first volume is already sold out, it was pressed at 250 copies. Obviously Nimbus didn’t suppose that the reactions were so positive so fast. So the ten others volumes will be pressed at 333 copies and a program of subscription is also available. For $225 it is possible to buy all the 10 volumes or it is also possible to buy each volume separately. It is in my opinion a rare opportunity to follow a group during several month of Sunday concerts given several times by month in 1979.

A Fundraiser for Tristan Honsinger

Laura Sanson is organizing this fundraiser:

"Our good friend and collaborator Tristan Honsinger has been a huge source of inspiration for so many over the years. Tristan has always dedicated himself fully to his work, often living from gig to gig and project to project. He has never used the internet, or approached his artistic life as an entrepreneur.

But no matter how big the child at heart, age does it´s best to catch up sooner or later. Now Tristan is broke, without a place to live and has health issues that require expensive medicines. Tristan deeply wants to spend his time performing, writing and working, but it´s impossible without the steady framework of a decent place to live, or money to pay for essential medicines and treatments.

We know that Tristan´s contributions to the international creative environment over the last 50 years has had an impact; not just artistically, but also on a human level. The world is full of people who love Tristan; either as friends, collaborators, fans (or all of them, as in our case). We want to help to facilitate for Tristan´s continued well-being, by reaching out to the global community.

The money will be used to get Tristan health insurance and a place to live."

Biography:

Tristan Honsinger (b. 1949 in Vermont, US) came to Europe in the early 70s. Since then he has crafted an all-consuming artistic expression encompassing music, theatre, poetry and visual arts. He is known for long-standing collaborations with musicians like Derek Bailey, Cecil Taylor, Han Bennink, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Toshinori Kondo, Tobias Delius, Joel Grip and Alexander Von Schlippenbach. He is a member of ICP, and has been leading his own groups like This, That & The Other, Hook Line & Sinker and Hopscotch.

THE SAM RIVERS SESSIONOGRAPHY

Today I would like to draw your attention to a book.
When I say book it's actually an understatement for the achievement
that Rick Lopez did in collecting all the data and information.
He still hopes for a normal life. Check it out!

The Sam Rivers Sessionography AVAILABLE HERE : : : Gofundme-Sam Rivers Sessionography
768 pages + nearly 600 images, many got from The RivBea Archive.
This is an independent publishing project—also contact ricklopez@bb10k.com for other options.

“A dizzying, stunning achievement of research and scholarship. ... A joyful, sometimes psychedelic experience.”
Mike Chamberlain review, allaboutjazz.com
“A Rosetta Stone of insight, and a well-deserved and worthy tribute to an overlooked giant of the music.”
Taylor Ho Bynum
“What an incredible piece of work. It’s really something else. Informative and entertaining. ... Anticipating hours of joy.”
Barry Altschul
“Absolutely mind-blowing! So great!” —Mats Gustafsson
“An essential resource, a trail map for a rare and beautiful landscape of sounds.” —Larry Blumenfeld
“A tremendous document. ... This book is powerful.” —Jason Moran
“Lopez’s Sam Rivers sessionography is state of the art.” —Lewis Porter
“Rick Lopez’s book is by no means a biography. It’s not a discography either, and it’s not a photo documentation. And yet somehow it is everything at the same time.”
Wolfram Knauer review, Jazzinstitut Darmstadt (Jan 2023)
“Rick Lopez has done it again!” —James Brandon Lewis

NEW RELEASES 2023/2 - BENGT "FRIPPE" NORDSTRÖM VINYL BOX

Here's the result of a huge body of work over two decades by Mats Gustafsson and Thomas Millroth to collect, archive, research and document the work of their friend and Mats' musical mentor, Bengt Nordström - a work of love and dedication to a singular artist.

The set includes the first re-release of Bengt's Natural Music LP and the first release of music that he shared with friends in tiny runs of test pressings on his Bird Notes label (on 3 LPs, Drastic Plastic, Någonting and Reality). There's a 7" EP of Bengt playing solo with the Ornette Coleman Quintet record, When Will the Blues Leave?, (11/10 on the Discaholic Corner music/rarity scales). The set is completed musically with a 10" tribute LP of performances by Anna Högberg, Isak Hedtjärn, Dror Feiler, Jörgen Adolfsson, Mats Gustafsson and Sven-Åke Johansson.

Mats has compiled the definitive Bird Note discography (in email after email, for so many years, he has been "working on it" - reaching out, meeting people, sharing recordings and knowledge, writing, proof reading, proof reading, proof reading ...).

Co-produced by Mats and Thomas with Antoine Plum of Ni-Vu-Ni-Connu and designed by Teresa Iten, the set includes a booklet with contributions by Thomas, an essay by John Corbett, unpublished photography, rare press clippings and notes from the artist. Also, a streaming link to "FRIPPE, Bengt Nordström, Moderna Muséet, 1973-05-29", a film by Torbjörn Ehrnvall.

Released by Ni-Vu-Ni-Connu on 15 February 2023, Bandcamp. Release party at Fasching on 15 February.

NEW RELEASES 2023/1 - CHRIS CAPERS & JOE RIGBY

Here are two recent releases from the unpretentious but definitely important label "Homeboy Music".

Although the sound is not the best (but still perfectly listenable) the music is great! My favourite CD is the one without piano ('Revelations'). But the one titled 'Impressions' (yep - the Coltrane tune) isn't tedious either. Both musicians play with full immersion and although the other musicians are unknown the music really took me up and up and up and ....

Hopefully the label's producer Roy Morris has more jewels in preparation.

I would like to recommend both releases for a start. Take a breath and support this enterprise directly at the label: Homeboy Music! - you won't regret it. And apart from ordering two rare releases I urge you to give the website a thorough examination. How many offerings about Earl Cross, Joe Rigby, Arthur Doyle, Yosef Mumin Phillips (from Black Unity Trio) or Ted Daniel you will find elsewhere? Go....

TOWERiNG iNFERNO feat. ELTON DEAN :: Kaddish (TI Records 1993)

I came to this album as it features Elton Dean, John Marshall and Chris Cutler on some tracks.

"Towering Inferno's album Kaddish, which was released by Island Records in August 1995, is an emotional epic spanning 75 minutes and evoking the darkest hours of the Holocaust, as well as the tranquil beauty of European folk music and Jewish prayer. Featuring the voices of acclaimed Hungarian folk singer Márta Sebestyén and Hungarian performance poet Endre Szkárosi in a 'punk/folk/metal/Jewish/classical opera', it tackles the thorny subjects of repression and survival, both past and present." -- www.soundonsound.com

EKKEHARD JOST QUINTET "CARAMBOLAGE" (VIEW,1983)

Excellent music by Ekkehard Jost and his comrades. "Palestrinas Reise nach Cadiz" is one of my favourite tunes from him which he has recorded at least twice. Another version and other clichè-free music can be found here. http://www.jazzhausmusik.de/pages/catalog_by_id.php?label_id=11 I would like to recommend three CDs: "Deep" with - among others - Tony Oxley and "Some Other Tapes" with different line-ups (including the second version of "Palestrinas Reise nach Cadiz"). And "Wintertango" with his working group.
