Charles Mingus Sextet in Oslo 1964

The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) is in the process of digitising its huge archive of programmes dating back several decades. Among the items to be uncovered is this gem which should be of huge interest to jazz enthusiasts.

It is the Charles Mingus Sextet recorded at the University hall at the University of Oslo on 12 April 1964. A very classic Mingus line-up on this date:

Charles MINGUS, bass,
Eric DOLPHY, alto sax,
Clifford JORDAN, tenor sax,
Johnny COLES, trumpet,
Jaki BYARD, piano
Dannie RICHMOND, drums

The tunes:

1. Goodbye, Eric Dolphy, hurry back
2. Orange was the Colour of her Dress, then Blue Silk
3. Ow/Parkeriana
4. Take the A train

Altogether close to one hour of music and it is a particular delight to see Eric Dolphy in action!

Giorgio Buratti-(J.Byard, D.Richmond, B.Jones,E.Preston) A smooth day ...-Durium lp, MS A 77268-1971

A rare one by eclectic Italian Jazz and improvising bassist and later electro - acoustic composer Giorgio Buratti , heard here in an impromptu studio session with members of Charles Mingus's touring band at the time..
 An unexpectedly intense foray into total improvisation, rather similar in substance and perhaps inspired by Mingus's 1961 free-cut up Collaged piece 'Passions of a man' , similarly alternating rambunctious, abrupt explosive polytonal gospel romps with elided pointillistic textural abstraction.. .
....besides which the fun being had by all involved is palpable and infectious...and very clearly audible..almost relentlessly so!

Amazing !.. what a joy to hear the great Jaki Byard in completely free mode for an entire record  , his contribution is outrageously fluid ..and certainly among the busiest and most genuinely interactive i've ever heard him..

Buratti made a string of interesting experimental albums from the late 60's to the mid 70's , some of which don't easily fit into genre classifications,one of those" Explosions "can still be found here, see the last comment by al66

Here's a Lesser Known record by the great Jaki Byard , too often unjustly remembered Solely as a Mingus side Man.

his Tenure with Mingus was relatively Short , theres a lot more to him than that, he was one of the most interesting 'Mainstream 'jazz pianists of his day!

Byard's string of eclectic adventurous records for Prestige in the 60's are magnificent, as is his later post 70's oeuvre , for labels as diverse as Muse, Concord ,Soul Note,and Leo...

He also plays Alto sax on 3 tracks here, astoundingly playing Fractured Tayloresque runs on Piano ,and  simultaneously scrabbly  Japan in a dishpan like Alto on the 'Garnering ,a bit Free Suite for Paris'..

Byards was a masterfully executed flawlessly inventive Technique which effectively synthesizes, Stride, Earl Hines ,so called Trumpet Style, Bud Powell and Free Jazz.

 Byard Also loved Piano duets, recording great ones with Howard Riley, Earl Hines, and Ran Blake....and Tommy Flanagan(see comments)

He  recorded a solo album for Futura , 'Parisian Solos'which has been reissued and can be found here its great!
