Thanks to Bozo for this tape.  Once you get used to listening to this from inside one of the basses it's ok.  The saxes are a little on the quiet side but this is a stupendous grouping with some fabulous playing. Pretty wild (no township).  Something happens (?) at 33:05 so I put a track break in.

Clifford Thornton - Ketchaoua

Following up a request from fellow blogger Correct Silence, here is another of the many records coming out of Paris in the late 60s, mixing mostly American expats with French musicians and released on the legendary Byg Actuel label. This has cornetist Clifford Thornton in four different ensembles, from multimember down to trio. Only four tracks, from the boisterous "Brotherhood" to the moody atmospherics of the tile track to the chant-infused "Pan-African festival". He was to release another album, The Panter and the Lash, on America, another French label documenting the same scene.

Due to alleged connections to the Black Panther Party, he was denied entry to France in 1970, but the ban was lifted the year after. Due to this interruption, he was unable to continue teaching and performing in France and eventually relocated to Geneva in Switzerland. Durinng this period he made The Gardens of Harlem, again for a large ensemble, which to my knowledge has not been released on cd. Later on he was featured on an allbum by Joe Malinga, a South Asrican expat.

Interestingly, the word "apura" in Tagalog (spoken in the Philippines) translates into English as "Very Urgent" which was the title of an album released in the late 60s by the Chris McGregor Group of which Moholo-Moholo was a member and Alexander Hawkins is a member of Moholo-Moholo's current outfit, Five Blokes. Trevor Watts was very much a part of the late 60s alt-jazz scene, too. Just connecting the dots ...

The Eddie Prevost Quartet also existed with Evan Parker instead of  Larry. One of their gigs I attended at the Duke of Wellington goes down as one of my favourite gigs of all time.  Unfortunately unrecorded.

The Lee Konitz - Warne Marsh Quintet live in Whitley Bay, UK, 1975

Perusing Thursday's Guardian online, I could not help noticing an obituary for Lee Konitz who passed away in New York on Wednesday, reportedly due to respiratory complications after having contracted the coronavirus. The obit was weitten by the jazz critic at the Guardian, John Fordham. An obit was also published in the New York Times by Peter Keepnews (whose surname certainly rings a bell), a jazz writer at the NYT. These obits document in great detail his considerable accomplishments over the years, going all the way back to the late 40s.

So, to commemorate this sad event, the only thing we can do on this blog is to dip into the past to see if we can find some musical specimens to remember him by. He had a long-running collaboration with Warne Marsh, who passed away in 1987. Both came to represent the cool jazz style typical of the West Coast at the time and both were strongly inspired by the pianist Lennie Tristano. What better then to select an unreleased audience recording with both of them, here from the UK in the mid-70s and from what we know, never officially released. There is an album called London Concert with approximately the same line-up, released on the Wave label, run by Peter Ind, who can be heard here on double bass. This session adds Dave Cliff on guitar.

Ustad Vilayat Khan - Live In Montréal June 30, 1978

Ustad Vilayat Khan was probably the most talented sitar player of the 20th century. If Ravi Shankar was the most popular out of India, Vilayat's style was surely more impressive. His ability to make the sitar sounding like a voice have no equal. In indian classical music the voice is the reference, as said the famous benkar Ustad zia Mohiuddin Dagar:
-"voice is king, instruments is minister".
The sitar of Ustad Vilayat Khan was often reaching the level of the king, it is particularly true in this massive concert.
Ustad Vilayat Khan have recorded many albums but it is on stage that he is incredibly great. Despite an important discography most of his albums are studio recordings, he didn't like very much to be recorded live.
Last but not least, he refused almost all the distinctions that the various musical academy in India offered to him, considering that those institutions were not able to appreciate his music. For a while he also refused to play for the all India radio.

Don Cherry's Norwegian Sextet live at NRK 1969

There seems to be somewhat of a Don Cherry revival going on in our contributions section,  spilling over to the front page, so here is another contribution which to my knowledge has not been mentioned yet. This is a recording made in the NRK (Norwgian Broadcasting Corporation) studios in October 1969. At the time Don Cherry had played concerts in and around Oslo with what was the Jan Garbarek Quartet. At the instigation of Erling Wicklund at NRK, they assembled in the NRK studies and were joined by Sidsel Paaske, better known as a painter, but here contributing vocals and jaws harp.

A piece in the magazine Ballade from 2012 entitled "Fusion in the lotus position" pointed to the integration of folk music in jazz improvisation of which Don Cherry was an important catalyst. He had worked with musicians from Turkey, Latin America and Sweden and was in Garbarek's view somewhat of a world artist. One could say that Garbarek has followed in his tracks, drawing on Norwegian tradional music as well as collaborating with Indian musicians. Sidsel Paaske, which we can hear on a couple of tunes, draws explicitly on Norwegian folk music.

The sound is low-fi, slightly cavernous. From what I know, this was probably recorded off radio with a mike and not from TV as was suggested in the info notes that came with the files. But, despite poor sound quality, this is an important historical document. I have no idea whether the master tapes still reside in the NRK archives, but as of now, this is what we have to make do with.

As an aside, the Scandinavian link continued with Neneh Cherry (DC was her uncle) and the Thing, originally conceived as a Don Cherry tribute band. Her daughter, Mabel McVey, has become a major pop artist in a very short time with the tune "Don't call me up". Good musical genes in that family!

Organic Music Theatre - Television Session Summer 1976

After Magogiallo's generous contributions of rare unreleased live by Don Cherry, here is one more very close to the RAI session with the same personnel and almost same titles.

The music if not so incredible as his early recordings show very well the musical personality of Don Cherry who was interested in the music itself before the style.

It remain me a story that composer and violinist Jean Yves Bosseur told me some years ago. He was invited to play violin by Archie Shepp but he said:
-"I'm not a jazz musician".
Then Shepp answered:
-"we won't play jazz, we will play music".

This might be a good definition for Don Cherry's music.
