wow! the amazing Audrey Chen as well! I saw her twice, and I hope to see Matana one day...
many thanks!

it's a shame her voice failed a little on "Libation for Mr. Brown (...)". I was wondering if this could happen one time or another, given the intensity of her singing, even though there's always a possibility she might have caught a cold or something. a mesmerizing performance, nevertheless.

Thanks Ricardo. Loved this album. Can't wait to hear this version. Didn't hear near enough praise last year for this amazing album. Can't think of a better way to start 2012 than with some Matana.

thank you Riccardo ! Matana Roberts was the most important 2011 discover for me . Bonne année !

@ buruno

I find particularly fascinating and sensual her "failed" voice: adds a more dramatic note compared with the official album.

BTW here's Chapter Two from WBGO.org :

Ce concert est magnifique. Merci encore Riccardo.

yes, I know what you mean. after a short while I totally got into it too ("failed" wasn't a appropriate term indeed), but at first I thought she wouldn't be able to sing at all -- she sounded a bit surprised as well.
in the end, the situation created a unique atmosphere to the performance. spiritual at its finest!
thanks again!

Wow! I have never heard of here, but d/led this based on Jessica Pavone being on it. What an amazing performance. I'll be buying the legit album asap...

Good to hear this - somewhat restored my belief in Ms Roberts, who I've most recently been hearing in more ad-hoc situations. For me the readings/vocals don't work - but they very rarely do, there's something much more timeless/abstract about music without words.

Whaaaatatttatat?!?!?!?!?!? This totally surprised me! Thanks a lot!!! I heard the name earlier but I skipped her somehow. Stupid me! Really capturing sounds. Beautiful Noah Howard type of playing combined with Ayler's strings and enough physical singing without being a cheap copy. Far from that!!! A just ordered her 2*10" and I'm really waiting for that.

Thanks for this. I saw this artist in Brighton some years ago with Burnt Sugar - a supreme musician with great stage presence. Many thanks!

note: Matana had a nasty cold during this tour, and during this performance. I'm 1 of the musicians on this bootleg.

THANKS A MILLION RICCCARDO!!! TOTALLY AGREE WITH BHOWANI... The most important discover for me too, of the 2011 and perhaps of the last years. Really love the underrated John Carter and his Roots And Folklore.. love Steve (Lacy) too. Matana is on the same way!!!
THANKS TO ANYONE ON INCSOL. GREAT STUFF

a re-up (yet another one) of this would fulfill dreams. To these humble ears, Matana Roberts is the future, present, and past of jazz all rolled into one commanding tone. There is fairly recent completely marvellous acapella stuff on her soundcloud, too, link given by riccardo above, in case anyone has missed it. msj
