....Requests

Requests, broken links, re-ups and related topics go here. It may be easier for admins to be attentive to these topics if they are put here and not under the individual posts. There's no guarantee that we may be able to respond to everything, but we'll give it a try.

I've deleted the previous 'Requests' post as it was becoming a bit unwieldy.
I shall start the requests with the last one from the previous thread.

Thanks for that info. I stopped tracking LMY bootlegs as I already have most of the recordings that get recycled from release to release, and because they're always hideously expensive. Thanks very much for posting that excerpt--very curious to hear Konitz's contribution.

@Bernie
Fascinating. I've heard that oft-repeated story about how he beat out Eric Dolphy at an audition, but I never knew he made any jazz recordings. I have a chunk of that WKCR broadcast but not the beginning.
That recording with Konitz is really nice. Very similar to the released version, but still engaging. Thanks again for sharing that. I wish more TOEM recordings were out there. If/when I get ahold of the Konitz recording lossless, I'll definitely share it and let you know.

@Dogon
It is not me who put the request about André Jaume, Joe McPHee Raymond Boni but thank you for the rip. But it seems that there is a problem with your turn table that can be heard only on the side a. The sound is as if the turn table has been wrongly connected, the stereo is strange and we also can hear a "hum" sound during all the first side. This problem is only on the first of the 4 sides. SO I wonder if it comes from your turn table or if this is like this on the lp.

Hi, I´m looking for these sessions, not officially
released:
- NDR- Jazzworkshop No.88, April 1973
1) Fourmenonly (H.Joos)
2) New Jazz Trio (M.Schoof)
- NDR- Jazzworkshop No.125, Febr.1977: MUMPS
- Balver Höhle, June 1977: MUMPS
Maybe someone has a radio recording ?

Ernst Grgo Nebhuth said...

Hi Bernie, the NDR Jazz Workshop No. 88 is on my want list since about 20 years. Never found it nor anyone who know more about it. Same for No. 125. One shorter title by Mumps from the Balver Höhle (1977) is available on a box set. According the label owner no more tapes were found in the estate of Karlheinz Klüter. But while we're at such elusive recordings maybe you have something else I'm searching for many years: Manfred Schoof Quintet + Don Cherry - Jazz Festival Munich April 1967.

Bernie said...

Hi Ernst, thank you very much for the feedback.
I know how difficult it is to get those rarities.
Unfortunately I do not have Schoof-Cherry ´67.
One of my favourite New Jazz-Groups is/was THE TRIO and
then MUMPS.I saw THE TRIO 3 times-first as a young man 1972 in Lörrach
(Jazztone) and then in Willisau. And in Willisau I saw too MUMPS 1976.
SRF Switzerland made the recordings https://www.willisaujazzarchive.ch/people-acts/act/the-trio-albert-mangelsdorff.html
Here is an MUMPS-excerpt (24 min./mp3) from NDR 1977:

On youtube I´ve found MUMPS - Stuttgart 1977, but in poor sound quality:

Of course I have this session, and I have nearly all the

- mostly from this wonderful blog. But I´m missing the first
from 1966 (I only have a 6min. excerpt from K.Berger Group)
and I´m missing 1974 Jazztrack & Guests.
By the way I was in the audience of the final concert
of the Baden-Baden Free Jazz Meeting 1971 at

What's the general feeling about the 'B.Free' label that released those massive German jazz festival box sets?

https://www.discogs.com/release/9043491-Various-International-New-Jazz-Meeting-Burg-Altena-1972-1973
https://www.discogs.com/release/7946043-Various-Born-Free-The-12th-German-Jazz-Festival
https://www.discogs.com/release/8507115-Various-New-Jazz-Festival-Balver-H%C3%B6hle-New-Jazz-1974-1975

There seems to be debate (on Discogs, at least) about whether or not it's a bootleg label. Are those box sets considered "post-able" on this site?

correct silence said...

@GregorHZ, the answer to your question is yes and no. This label is at the same time a bootleg label and not a bootleg label. They have legally acquired the recordings of all the box set published and in most case the sound is perfect. It have obviously been cleaned and a bit remastered. They have those recordings from the defunct label JG records. But some of the musicians concerned by those reissues say that they haven't been contacted and of course they haven't received royalties. It is the case for Trevor Watts, that what he told me. It is also the case for the musicians of the Matchi Oul Big Band. They even where not aware about their performance reissued on one of the box set.

GregorHz said...

@correctsilence - Thanks for the breakdown; a complicated scenario indeed (though I'm sure a number of labels fall into the same legit/non-legit category).
Safe to say we should avoid posting any material from those sets here?

Ernst Grgo Nebhuth said...

Safe to say we should avoid posting any material from those sets here? > yes - at least for the "moment".
