AMM. London Lighthouse, 1989

This was the first time I saw AMM and it had a great effect on me. Some of that being a confirmation that sound didn't have to be music as such to convey emotion, and be an uplifting and enlightening experience.  The concert took place in the London Lighthouse, a centre for people affected by HIV and AIDS.  The whole thing was of great sensitivity, beauty and I suppose a touch of melancholy.

Take time to listen.  Let me know what you think.

For Sotise, a big AMM fan.

AMM

LOU GARE, tenor sax, violin
IAN MITCHELL, clarinet, bass clarinet, wood flute, bicycle pump
KEITH ROWE, guitar, electronics, radio
JOHN TILBURY, piano
EDDIE PREVOST, drums, percussion

1. 46:39
2. 46:36

at the London Lighthouse, London.  7th October 1989

Thanks Andy (and Sotise for the upcoming posts). I'm more familiar with Rowe's more recent offerings so it's great to hear some AMMage.

Many thanks for the AMM recordings and for the 'Masters' near-AMM recording! Certainly, any further unissued concert material would be greatly appreciated.

And I'd like to second the recommendation in the original post: seek out the official AMM releases on Matchless, most of them easily available and well worth the very moderate price. My own favorites are "The Inexhaustible Document", "The Nameless Uncarved Block" and 'Newfoundland", as well as the somewhat rawer Cardew-period things. For me, it hasn't really been AMM since Keith Rowe left the group. The not-always harmonious relations between him and Prevost seems essential to making AMMmusic. Having said that, "Sounding Music", a fairly recent post-Rowe Matchless CD with guest John Butcher is well worth seeking out.

Thanks again! (And thanks for yet another unknown-to-me Marion Brown session.)

PS to Andy, who posted this particular concert: thanks also for your personal reminiscences. It occurs to me now that I was in London at the time of this benefit concert and I could very well have seen this, as it was at the Lighthouse. For those not old enough to remember what it was like to have AIDS in 1989, I'd like to dedicate this comment to my friend Mark D., also living in London at the time. Although his musical tastes were somewhat different to mine, I feel sure he would have loved to have seen and heard this music. (Mark died of AIDS in 1991. The treatments that were available at the time, even with the support of the British National Health system, generally did nothing more than prolong the suffering for a year or two.)

Thanks again Andy for the recording and the context.

Many thanks !! It would be nice to know what is the recording method / lineage if known?

Andy said...

@TomP I recorded it on a TDK MA-X 90 cassette with a portable Marantz CP430 recorder and a nothing special Sony stereo mic. Transferred to cdr via Tascam CD-RW700 burner.

I'm just beginning to really get a handle on AMM and this trove of stuff with Lou Gare is enthralling. Many thanks for making it available.
