at first listening i thought this is a joke - hearing these 4 players playing absolutely straight jazz is odd. it's nicely played, but without any touch of what they're famous for - i guess they just had a great time playing the classics (i take back the "murdering" from above - they "praise" them as much as they're able to).
i'm not convinced yet, will try a few more listens. you don't fool us, nick, don't you?!? ;)

i guess you mean the liner notes, nick, right? i just read them, and it becomes obvious, although the music doesn't blow me away. to hear it live, dance to it, after an experimental concert - this must be a completely different way of hearing it. listening to it at home, on the pc, next to carl, schlippenbach's and johansson's other recordings - is not fully convincing for me, to be true.
the idea behind it i find great - too much avantgarde makes me sick, same like too much tradition or nostalgia... :) - balance is the key word.

sorry for bothering you, nick, but i'm not english native speaker, so i don't get what you're up to - are the bananas for you a symbol of entertainment, or even of fake?!? i read the liner notes and now do understand a bit more behind this project, there's still a but...

Entertainment - history - a little kitsch - playing by different rules (no bananas for FMP concerts) - decadence (bananas were not always cheap) - role-play (Sven in sunglasses) - festivities - invite some friends for drinks, snacks and talk over the music.
Nick, you're not suggesting that these fine gentlemen have gone bananas?
I'm sure their repertoire could be quite suitable for Clärchens Ballhaus.

They are an enjoyable bar band, but I don't think they have any future in serious music.
i couldn't disagree more , being a fan of pre bop, i feel they play these tunes with harmonic subtlety and real authenticity , this is superb !!would love to hear more.
There's nothing wrong with avants doing trad stuff in my book, and even better if they put their own slant on it.

I remember that Kevin Ayers once released an album called "Bananamour" and a later one called "yes, we have no mananas". Not jazz, though. I posted Kevin Ayers and the Whole World with Lol Coxhill a few years ago. A very popular post, more than 1000 downloads.
Bananamour is fabulous ,just listened to Joy of a toy and shooting at the moon the other day
