UPCOMING & RECENT RELEASES II

I won't give a review for this latest release on the almost dormant label "psi".
But these 'liquid sculptures' have won my admiration easily. Quite a special sound-world.
Gouband plays lithophones (percussion played on and with stones) while Nauseef mostly uses metallic percussion.
Evan Parker feels strongly that this is one of the best records he has ever made.
And I gladly agree with this notion. Already added to my 'top ten' of 2016.
Highest recommendation on my side.

Just deleted the link for a LP rip we've offered in 2010.
Yesterday morning - some minutes before I went to work - I discovered that it was reissued in September. Luckily it was available in Germany and so I got it today.
Remastered from the original tapes and housed in a LP replica.
A great early collaboration between Japanese and Afro-American masters.

The above recording is the second CD which shall add up to a trilogy.
"Luten" > Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky is in top condition here despite being 81 when this 30 minutes of music were recorded - yeah.
The line-up appeared promising before I heard it for the first time some weeks ago:

Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky - as, cl
Elan Pauer - p, perc
John Edwards - b
Robert Landfermann - b
Christian Lillinger - dr, perc

Available through the label Euphorium and elsewhere.

DISCOVERED & RECOMMENDED

I don't know wether the Al Neil Trio is really the first Free Jazz group from Canada.
But this recent purchase is surely an extraordinary find for me.
Especially the vocalisations from Richard Anstey have won me over. And this is true despite my general aversion for lyrics/poems et. al. "attached" to music.
But that's not the whole story. The integration of field recordings in the process of improvisation and the general musical prowess of the trio makes for an engaged listening experience.
In my book this double CD is THE reissue (out-of-five) of 2016, albeit released already in 2002.
It will be available as long as stock lasts. You can get it here as download or as the complete package including liner notes and reminiscences from a.o. Eugene Chadbourne, Milo Fine and Al Neil.

The first free jazz group in Canada:
Al Neil - piano, zither, vocals, miscellaneous instruments;
Richard Anstey - acoustic bass, soprano sax, vocals, toy instruments;
Gregg Simpson - drums, percussion, toy instruments, sound collages

Includes 30 page booklet with reviews and photos.

More info to be found there.

Gérard Grisey - Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil

There seems to have been a good reaction, in number of downloads at least, to Grisey's Les Espaces Acoustiques posted here a few weeks ago, and I hope that posting music like this here is not only of interest to regular visitors, but also attracts others who may become equally interested in some of the other music posted here.

So here is Gérard Grisey's most famous piece, Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil (1997-8), a meditation through four songs - from Christian, Egyptian, Greek and Mesopotamian cultures - on the passing from life to death. I don't hear any morbidity here, or sentimentality, instead a beautiful, rarefied contemplation, on the cusp of Liebestod.

I recorded this from France Musique earlier this year, and it is a remarkably assured performance. Don't hesitate if you get the chance to see this in concert!

UPCOMING + RECENT RELEASES I

David S. Ware's first recordings have been reissued on the AUM Fidelity label; this includes the original Hat Hut LP, together with some other takes from those sessions. A strong and demanding music by

Piano – Anthony Pateras
Trumpet – Scott Tinkler
Violin – Erkki Veltheim

After the last two notifications are reissues I would like to recommend a music by three relatively unknown musicians (I assume...).
Erkki Veltheim was unknown to me until I've heard this CD in September.
Tinkler and Pateras I do follow since about 15 years, albeit separately as this seems to be their first recorded collaboration.
And four weeks after I discovered this dense music they came to Munich were I was lucky to hear and see them playing at least as strong as on the CD in the pink cover.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We've posted this early example of European Free Jazz about six years ago.
Off course we've deleted the link after the vinyl reissue was available.
This is one of the so called "holy grails" where the nimbus is on a par with the quality of the music.

---------------------------------

For those who weren't able or willing to get the LP in 2011 the German label JazzHausMusik has thankfully reissued it on CD with an extra title.
"Portiques Indéformables" and "Emprise Ferroviaire" are my favourite tracks.
Dark moods - excellent!

Got this gorgeous box-set today. Shall listen to it immediately after I finish this post.
But I already enjoy the way it is designed.
Each box-set is unique in its appearance.  And a - for me - quite important feature is the haptic sensation the printing offers to my fingers, (rather not the tongue ;-)
Unpredictable Series is the label's name. Which to me is a fitting description for the group's music.
Take also a look at this affiliated website.
Available at least since mid June........

The Jimmy Giuffre 3 with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow only lasted about a year, but their work, which ranged from blues to tempo-less group improvisation, became a major influence on a wide variety of subsequent music from 'soft jazz' to 'hard-core' free improvisation. This double CD reissues their only known well-recorded concerts, originally released in 1992/3 on hat ART 6071/2. In addition, there are six previously unissued performances from the Bremen concert, three trios and three piano/bass duets. Also included are the two tracks from their FUSION album which were not included in the ECM double-album reissue. 158 minutes. (Released on October 13, 2016)
You can get it directly from Emanem

I would like to add that the Graz recording isn't so bad soundwise either - for a bootleg.

Okkyung Lee Septet / Fred van Hove & Els Vandeweyer duo / Donaueschingen, 15th October 2016

Two sets from this year's Donaueschingen festival, broadcast by SWR2.

First, Okkyung Lee's septet, which brings the kind of freshness and zest to free music that makes you sit up and think - I haven't heard anything quite like this before, and I want to hear more! Pansori is probably an acquired taste, (but then I did spend about two years of my life listening to little other than Chinese opera), but the music itself is remarkable;

Okkyung Lee - cello
Song Hee Kwon - Pansori-Sängerin (musical storyteller)
Jae Hyo Chang - percussion
John Butcher - saxophone
John Edwards - bass
Lasse Marhaug - electronics
Ches Smith - drums/percussion/vibraphone

"Cheol-Kkot-Sae" (Steel Flower Bird) (38’04”)

Donaueschingen; 15th October 2016

Second, a lyrical and shimmering duo with Fred van Hove and Els Vandeweyer;

Duo (44’45”)

Fred van Hove - piano
Els Vandeweyer - vibraphone

Stockhausen at the Henie Onstad Art Centre, Høvikodden, 1969

Some more from the NRK archives, this time two performances by Karlheinz Stockhausen's emsemble on 29 and 30 September 1969. These were at the Henie Onstad Art Centre at Høvikodden outside Oslo. The Centre was opened in 1968 and soon became the most prominent venue for new music, electronica and even jazz. Among jazz events in 1969, the premier performance of George Russell's Electronic Sonata for Souls Loved by Nature and a concert by the Cadentia Nova Danica, an ensemble led by saxophonist John Tchicai.

We get to hear two pieces (in separate files), first "Kurzwellen" (Shortwaves) where short wave receivers play a key role as a sound source for emulation and improvisation. This piece was recorded and released by Deutsche Grammophon in 1970. The record lists six musicians, but as far as I make out, there are only five present in this concert. These are:

Karlheinz Stockhausen - electronics, mixing, harmonica (on "Es")
Aloys Kontarsky - piano
Johannes G. Fritsch - viola
Harald Bojé - keyboards
Rolf Gehlhaar - percussion

The second piece, "Es" (It), an excerpt from "Aus den Sieben Tagen" (From the Seven Days), features the same ensemble, but this piece is based on what may be called non-cognitive spontaneity, reminiscent of Eastern ideas derived from meditation and buddhism. Only when the mind is devoid of thought is the time to play. Once one starts to think again, one should stop immediately. Hence there is a lot of space and silence in this music, only broken by sudden otbursts of sound. Both pieces may sound random to many ears and to some degree they are, but there is, I sense, a strong procedural and conceptual element to this music nonetheless. The second half of the video is a Q&A session with musicians, including some of his own, where he gets to expound on his concept of biological time, space, natural sound and on what he calls intuitive music.

Same as for the Cathy Berberian programme, which I posted before, it's all in glorious black and white!
