This is a tribute to Andrew Hill broadcast last week on BBC Radio 3. It consists of a live US-UK Big Band concert, and excerpts from a solo session commissioned by the BBC.

Line-up:

Denys Baptiste, Greg Tardy - tenor saxophones
Phil Todd - baritone saxophone
Ron Horton, Noel Langley, Chris Storr, Byron Wallen - trumpets
Roland Bates, Pat Hartley, Fayyaz Virji - trombones
Andy Grappy - tuba
Andrew Hill - piano
John Hebert - bass
Nasheet Waits - drums
Set list:
Not Sa No Sa 15:28
Smooth 13:11

Divine Revelation 7:54
New Pinocchio 8.54
Flying In The Sky 7:07

Andrew Hill, recorded solo at Gateway Studios, London in April 2000
Fourth Fifth 19:33

Oddly, the setlist differs from that given for the same concert on the Hill discography website. If anyone has any clues as to why I'd be interested to know.

FM recording ripped at VBR quality 0. Links in comments.

Hi! It seems the link is unfortunately not working anymore (unless I don't you massmirror correctly). Being a huge fan of Andrew Hill, I would it appreciate it very much if the link works again!

Thanks a lot for the beautiful blog.

I attended the concert and watched quite a few people leave the auditorium (there was a festival bar just outside) because the music was so badly compromised by the very poor acoustic and sound system at the Bath Pavilion. Mercifully, the BBC engineers can be relied upon to rescue the music when they record at this venue, and it was not until I heard the broadcast of the recording that I fully appreciated the music. The repeat broadcast some time later (from which I made my own recording off the radio) included some extra material from the start of the concert.

I saw him in Verona in 1986 or 1987 and it was a wonderful concert.
