INTERNATIONALES NEW JAZZ MEETING AUF BURG ALTENA (JG RECORDS/Compilation, 1970)

Here's my first attempt for a compilation. In general I prefer "proper" albums, but with such a line-up I couldn't withhold myself.

A special mentioning goes for a rather unusual piece by Albert Mangelsdorff's group (in my ears) and to the Schlippenbach Trio with Paul Lovens and Michel Pilz! Some month ago I was convinced that there is no official recording by this trio.
( see > http://inconstantsol.blogspot.com/2010/10/schlippenbach-trio-first-incarnation.html ) - to err is human...and in this case quite joyful.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Hey, onxidlib, this looks very interesting indeed! Can't wait for the download to finish. Thanks a lot for sharing.
I'm particularly intrigued by the Wolfgang Dauner Trio track. That formation (Dauner-Weber-Braceful) recorded the excellent Dreamtalk album, but not much else. So I'm curious what they'll do with Summertime. Pity that it's "only" an excerpt. Which brings me to my question. I didn't quite understand whether this a compilation you put together from the original LPs or whether this is JG's selection which they released as a separate album. If the former is the case, then I'll be a greedy fellow and ask, "why can't we have the whole thing?" But I guess, it's probably the latter.
Many thanks for your excellent work.

Hi Gato,

I used several tracks from each LP respectively.
I will post at least one follow-up from these two LPs.
Plus another compilation from - again - two LPs.

I choosed this way because there is also some Dixieland on one of these LPs.
At least there is more from Dauner's trio (a whole LP side), which will be included in an upcoming post.

Here's the line-up from both LPs.

JG 21/22

Internationales New Jazz Meeting Auf Burg Altena 1970
Side 1:Jiggs Whigham Trio, Joachim Kühn Eje Thelin Group
Side 2:Wolfgang Dauner Trio
Side 3: Albert Mangelsdorff Quartett, New Jazz Trio
Side 4: Dave Pike Set, John Surman Trio

(all posted except Wigham, Pike + Dauner)

and

JG24 / 25

Remembering’70

Side 1: Four City Seven and One; Blackbirds of Paradise; Sidewalk Hot Jazz Orchestra; Niels Unbehagen Quartett;

Side 2: Dave Pike Set; Rüdiger Schulz Quartett; Jan Huydts Trio und Theo Lovendie

Side 3: Wolfgang Dauner Trio; Alexander v. Schlippenbach Trio; John Surmann Trio + Alan Skidmore (not the same track as on Altena70);

Side 4: Champion Jack Dupree/ Xhol Caravan

(not posted side 1 + 2 and 3)

Next compilation will be Jan Huydts Trio und Theo Lovendie and probably Rüdiger Schulz Quartett from JG 24/25 + Jiggs Whigham and Dauner Trio from JG 21/22.

I have to add that I like "real" Oldtime Jazz.
But the musicians which started the Dixie revival in the sixties - no thank you. It's simply not my cup of tea.

Thank you very much Onx. Do you know if The Trio piece (Surman / Phillips / Martin) also appears on their "Live in Altena" album (JG 018) or is it new?

Ernst Grgo Nebhuth said...

Yes it is a new piece - JG 18 was recorded on Jan. 10th 1970
whereas JG 21/22 was recorded June, 26th 1970.

glmlr said...

Thanks for the clarification Onx. And big big thanks for the unknown Michel Pilz piece too!

For Trio fanatics: the second half of track 4 (baritone) is "Oh Dear", and track 7 is "Veritably". The opening half of track 4 (soprano) is ... ? I don't know.

Thanks for your research - appreciated.

This post must be something special.

Multiupload is reporting 12.028 downloads in Kazakhstan !!

No joke - maybe a bug?

Great post, thank you!

An excellent website dealing with the Altena Jazzfestival and JG Records is here:

http://www.myfavouritejazz.proxudo.de/html/newjazzaltena.html

However, it is in German with only very few key information in English.
