That's really sad. May his spirit be at peace. I love his Piano playing.

Indeed Andy very sad I still remember the first time I saw Keith playing Newcastle solo and duo with Nick Evans to say it was mesmerising would be an understatement. I think the August Air one is from the Queen Elizabeth Hall 92 - Paul,

@ Avant30. Thanks very much for that. That duo with Nick Evans must have been great!

Long time ago when I first met Keith Tippett's music I was very young and unprepared to fully appreciate it, it gave me a sort of whipping, like...man wake up! He opened me the road to the world of european impro scene. A great man and a fantastic musician. R.I.P.

This is really very sad. Only yesterday (and the day before) I listened to his 2013 recording with Paul Rogers, Michel Pilz and Cognard. He shines on this double LP.
My first exposure to his playing was King Crimson's "Cat Food" where he plays a short but impressive solo.
Next time I heard him on his FMP solo outings. After a first listen I only thought that this is were music can go - or better fly.
During the same time period I discovered Centipede - his wonderful gargantuan version of a big band. And then came Ovary Lodge, Mujician, The Ark, RoTTor, Nicra and all the other groups he led and participated in.
Oh my - R.I.P.

it is very sad; I heard he he had started playing in concert again, and I sincerely hoped that the worst had passed. I listened him live the first time in Bologna, Teatro Antoniano, with Ovary Lodge, I think it was 1973. Elton, Hugh, Pyp, Keith, I feel like crying.

Very sad news. I was lucky to see him many times and chat on occasion and he was a wonderful man.

Thanks Andy. An extraordinary artist and a huge hearted human being. I will miss him and his music enormously. Thank you for this - and all the other postings which have kept him in the minds of his fans and brought new listeners to the music. Rest in peace Keith. Dave B

@ Andy No worries and yes indeed it was. It should have been Keith and Roy Babbington but Roy was ill so Nick played instead and it was awesome. Have to say it's hard to pinpoint a favourite band or album as I just love them all.

I played with Keith some years ago. I was nowhere near his level, but his musical generosity shone through.

Hopefully, (time will confirm) - and if you ask me - we have lost a great pianist, a great improviser, a great composer and a great bandleader, as well as a really fun guy to hang around with (as I can attest). I regret not speaking to him for some time. I'll miss him greatly. A National Treasure.

A terrible loss, one of the greatest men and greatest musicians in the history of jazz. He never did anything that was less than wonderful. There was no-one else like him and we will all greatly miss his generosity and creativity.
