TUOHI KLANG "PENNSELMANN HITS VOL.2765" (UFO, 1972)

After removing at least 500 clicks I'm finally able to present this wonderful music.

In my IMHO this is one of Vesala's best recordings - excellent and intense drumming!
Strong baritone from  Paakkunainen....Koskinen's trumpet!
Wonderful and joyful bass work from Hauta-aho...Pekka Pöyry's reeds are...Mircea Stan and his trombone...high wailing harmonies - snake-lines...clear articulation - no cliches....space even when playing heavy....enough praising...
A real gem - hope it will be re-issued soon - would be happy to delete the links and buy me a remastered CD....

Meanwhile - Enjoy.

Heikki 'Mike' Koskinen, trumpet
Mircea Stan, trombone
Pekka Pöyry, alto and soprano saxophone, flute
Seppo Paakkunainen, baritone and soprano saxophone
Teppo Hauta-aho, bass, pipe
Edward Vesala, drums

A1. A-vara (Koskinen)                  12:53
A2. Marssi For Keinonen (Hauta-aho)  05:12
A3. Interlude (Paakkunainen)         01:45
B1. Waltz No. 3 (Vesala)             08:40
B2. Kling Klang (Paakkunainen)       10:23

Recorded on April 20, 1972, at Finnvox Studios, Helsinki, Finland.

UFO 004 (lp rip)

Cool & clickless, thanks.

Thanks a lot Onx. Your copy of this is in much better condition than mine!

The sleeve in fact identifies the bassist as Teemu Hauta-Aho, not the better known Teppo Hauta-Aho. Or is this perhaps the same person???

Thanks - this is wonderful

I really enjoyed this. Many thanks.

Thanks for doing all that work. Wonderful LP, and I could not agree more about the drumming!

Thanks -- a fun record!

I suspect that Teemu and Teppo are the same person; I've seen a reference to Teemu Hauta-Aho in Duo Neuva Finlandia, and Teppo is in Trio Nueva Finlandia.

Found a nice short video with the Tuohi-kvartetti playing a tune in Montreux (1971)...

Yes, Teemu Hauta-Aho is an alias of Teppo Hauta-Aho. He's also gone by "Teemu Kalmisto" at times.

There was also another incarnation of this band called Kalmiston Klangi between the Tuohi-kvartetti of 1971 in Montreux and Penselmann Hits that recorded four tracks for the Finnish National Broadcasting corporation that I believe have been unreleased until just this week when one track Anna Manna was included in a 3 CD anthology of Finnish Jazz "Eteenpäin! Suomi-Jazz 1960-1975" on the Artie Music label.

Thanks Onxidlib for this wild one and all the others for additional info.

Thanks JP for the info - the anthology does also include Tuohi-kvartetti playing 'Seagull'.

Actually Anna manna is by Tuohiklang. Kalmiston Klangi was same band (same line-up). Hauta-aho means litterly "tomb glade" and nickname Kalmisto is old word for graveyard. Teppo is nickname from Teemu. Kalmiston Klangi / Tuohiklang made two appearances for YLE, finnish broadcast company, and Anna Manna is from later, which was already by name Tuohiklang. I recommend also LP by Nunnu Big Band (composed by Paakkunainen), where whole line-ups of Tuohiklang and Kvartet appeares with other musicians. These LPs should be able at Spotify now.

Removed the link 'cause the LP will reissued by Svart Records next year! Got this info from the label today.

Svart seems to a bit slow on reissuing this so it might be of interest Warner Music has put up this on youtube with fantastic sound. Just search Tuohi Klang.

Ernst Grgo Nebhuth said...

Thanks bunsen-lamp for the hint. But I haven't found any music from this LP offered by Warner at youtube.

Seems to be geoblocking at work. I am in Finland and can play those tracks but tried with vpn on and could not. I suggest you try with vpn set to Finland, if I remember correctly FreeDome among others allowed you to set your location to Finland (I use ZenVPN myself, which does not.)

Anyways, here are direct links to the tracks and they sound excellent, as expected from official Warner release.

Musically, I say, I prefer this band with Fender Rhodes piano which was added on at least one show, adds a bit different mood. One track from Finnish TV archives here

Very kind, thank you.

The direct link to Tuohi-kvartetti I appreciate. Great but short performance.
Saw it once years ago. Mostprpbably this is the same version as on a 3CD box-set with Finnish Jazz.
https://www.discogs.com/Various-Eteenp%C3%A4in-Suomi-Jazz-19601975/release/4428843

The second link leads to the same videos / music I found by searching directly at youtube.
But actually there is not a single tune from the LP "Penselmann Hits" to be heard. All music is from other recordings. Maybe you do see something else at your location!?
I shall happily wait until Svart or another label will reissue this LP.
I have a not pefect but good vinyl rip. Although the rip from a friend's LP has literally hundreds of clicks 'n' pops I managed to remove manually 99% of it.
So for the time being I'm happy enough with my cleaned rip.

Somehow I believe "Tuohi" means here (at youtube) what it means in Finnish = birchbark.
Maybe the noun is a symbol for Finnish music as the birchbark flute (and other instruments made of birchbark) is a national Finnish treasure. But I might be wrong - I'm in no way an expert for all things Finnish.

However - thanks anyway for caring - it is really appreciated!
Cheers

Still, geoblocking. I had all the 5 tracks from Pensselmann hits when I opened the 1st link posted. Off topic, Warner has posted much else on youtube as well, like all of the Eero Koivistoinen legendary early albums like For Children and Original Sin, which are hard to find even as Svart reissues now.

Hi bunsen_lamp,

now I found it but the music is not available in Germany.
But thanks anyway.
I still hope Svart will do a reissue - maybe they even make a CD with extra music as in the case of the "Hot Lotta" reissue.
I would appreciate a release including the four(?) titles from the Finnish TV archives.

As of january 2021 Svart has still not issued 'Tuhohi Klang'. I got my copy second hand in the 'Digelius' old store Helsinki in 1983. Fortunately it was in very good condition. I digitised it and a few years ago I was offered such a good price for it that a gentleman in Germany now has the lp. My didi version sounds great. --- You Tube is still blocking the files. If Svart ever does issue this (I know they own the master) I'll be first in the queue! --------------By the way, around the same period an almost identical lineup participated in the lp 'Pori Jazz Festival Competition Winners' Studio rerecordings of the music played at the festival. EMI Odeon issued it in Finland. I have a digitised copy of that too. The same gentleman in Germany has the original as well. Well worth looking for!! Best wishes. J

HI JeffJazzWraight, thanks for your comment.
Yesit is sad that Svart haven't reissued this great music. Hope it is still in the pipeline.
The other recording you're mentioning I got as a CD about two years ago. Recommended.
