Archie Shepp-Life at the Donaueschingen music festival, 1967- Saba LP , SB 15 148 st

This is for tony , who privately requested a re-up of 'One for the Trane' posted by Boromir as MP3'S a back in 2008. this is the very same record , in its original form on Saba/MPS . a real Gem by one of Archie Shepps best bands of the day , which unaccountably has never been reissued on CD outside of Japan.
What a joy to hear R.Rudd and Grachan Moncur tailgating each other and Shepp... Apparently this particular year at Donnaueschingen , was germany's real intro to the second wave of American new thing, and many in the Audience were outraged.. if you listen closely at certain points ,you'll hear a low but steady barrage of booing and jeering ...

"all of a sudden it became obvious that the battle fronts had reversed themselves under the onslaught of Free Jazz : under the impact of this music even the most serial , aleatoric and Electronic works now belonged to the the small fixed world of the establishment"
"Prof Strobel, the distinguished head of the Donaueschingen program, had specifically called for a shocking program. Well, it turned out to be such a shocker that he him self was shocked. Archie Shepps wild atacca on the Spiessburgerlichkeit and self satisfaction of the white world, with all the snobbism that goes with it-the respectably "normal"Donaueschingen audience was left limp by this outburst at the end by a three hour concert"
Joachim E.Berendt (from the liner notes)

-Live at Donaueschingen- : Roswell Rudd, Grachan Moncur iII (tb) Archie Shepp (ts) Jimmy Garrison (b) Beaver Harris (d) Live, "Donaueschingen Musiktage", Donaueschingen, October 21, 1967 One for Trane pt 1 Saba (G)15148SB One for Trane pt 2 - Note :

Nice, nice - I like this record !

'Pitchin' Can' I have and can rip to FLAC if you want.
Didn't it come out on CD as a Universal/America release though? (not sure). That could be the best sound upgrade ..

Thanks for Donaueschingen !

S, no pitchin' can has never been reissued to my knowledge.. the universal -america series only covered the better known releases , and are all sold out anyway as far as i can tell.

At least in Europe all America reissues are deleted (at least for about two years now).
'Pitchin' Can' was not among them.

Archie Shepp's Donaueschingen is simply my favourite recording from the now more conservative master.

Never re-released in Europe - as far as I know only in Japan - my CD is from over there.

Hope for them....

Onx , yeah me too i love this record... essential and up there with any of his from this period which are all essential .. in my opinion.

I - simply - agree with you!

For my ears Shepp's last "good" recording was for Enja in 1978 "Steam" and the duo with Horace Parlan.

THANKS TO ANYONE HERE!!! For Your continuing effort, generosity strenght and marvellous musical ears!
The blogosfere has changed a a lot in the last years. Many fine places had broke down, other become private (I've always felt this choice as a contadiction in terms)many are mostly expression of the author and it seem that the only importan thing is that someone has to leave a comment. Here has always been another place...and I'am so proud that I could give a little contribution here in a dark moment. Now Sotise is back!..and serviceton too togheter with other old and new music and culture lovers.
THANKS!!!!
Here a fine place in my opinion [http://freethemusic-olatunji.blogspot.com]

Miles Davis toured Europe in 1967 and Shepp was the support. He played this piece and I saw it in Hammersmith and he blew Miles off the stage.

Does anyone have the boot released as Freedom? It's the same group from the same tour only in France Dec. 15 1967.
