....Requests

Requests, broken links, re-ups and related topics go here. It may be easier for admins to be attentive to these topics if they are put here and not under the individual posts. There's no guarantee that we may be able to respond to everything, but we'll give it a try.

I've deleted the previous 'Requests' post as it was becoming a bit unwieldy.
I shall start the requests with the last one from the previous thread.

Ava,
All the Kaoru Abe Passe-Tamps's recordings that Nick posted here all still have good links.
The AD (ADrive) links are all still active.
Unless you were asking for the rest of the series. In that case, the 5 that Nick posted are all that I have.

Going through some IS files I've DL'd I came across something labeled Erich Kleinschuster + Charles Tolliver but without any notes. To my ears it's definitely Tolliver. However, I couldn't find anything corresponding listed on the blog. There are six tracks, no titles. Anybody have any idea what this recording might be, from when and where?

Ernst Grgo Nebhuth said...

Hi Dolphyfan, I had posted several reccording by the Erich Kleinschuster Sextet with a.o. Tolliver, Carmell Jones, Joe Henderson, Phil Woods, Clifford Jordan, etc..
But since last year there are three double LPs with most of the titles available.
https://www.discogs.com/artist/2392603-Erich-Kleinschuster-Sextett

Therefore I've set these posts to draft.
Yet - six of the posts/recordings are still available here at the Blog: https://inconstantsol.blogspot.com/search/label/Erich%20Kleinschuster

The titles and line-up of the Kleinschuster / Tolliver recording are as follows:

Charles Tolliver, trumpet
Robert Politzer, trumpet
Erich Kleinschuster, trombone
Hans Salomon, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet
Fritz Pauer, piano, electric piano
Jimmy Woode, bass
Erich Bachträgl, drums

1. Lil's Paradise (C. Tolliver) 8:48
Solos: Politzer, Pauer

2. The Household of Saud (C. Tolliver) 4:57
Solos: Tolliver, Pauer

3. Paperman (C. Tolliver) 6:32
Solos: Kleinschuster, Salomon (as)

4. In the Nile (C. Tolliver) 10:12
Solos: Tolliver, Pauer

5. Truth (C. Tolliver) 7:55
Solos: Tolliver, Pauer, Woode

6. Right Now (J. McLean) 4:29
Solos: Tolliver, Pauer

Recorded at Austrophon Studio, Vienna on February 1, 1969.

Need help identifying another file. Looks like I grabbed it from IS in 2014. Pretty sure it's Paul Dunmall, seems to be a quartet. There are three tracks, none named (timings roughly 14", 12", 7").

I was talking about my rip of the Clifford Thornton not the Grachan Moncur that you kindly posted. This album is great but there is a slight problem on the track 3, it ends before the end. DO you think that you could rip again only the track 3?
This album is absolutely fantastic and proof that Grachan Moncur is a underrated genius

Just a follow-up on the Sam Rivers Orchestra in Brussells, 1977—
Thanks to "correct silence" for the correction on Pullen, which will be going in this spring's PDF update to the Sessionography. His original post on May 7, 2022, which referred to the error in my document and said that "but he (RL) admit that there are many mistakes on his work," but hopefully in future folks will explain the distinction between the online version (makes me depressed to think about it), and the book. The website version is now around 6 years out-of-date, and has not incorporated any of the millions (haha) of corrections that I made during the four years+ that it took me to turn it into a book (which also included complete access to the Sam Rivers archive).
So ANYWAY, the book is comparatively aces, the web version is an embarrassment compared to what exists in print. I have a LARGE TYPE disclaimer to that effect, and hope that peoplke will mention that my "many mistakes" exist only in the old online thing.
Thanks for the attention! And I'll be quoting the updated "Correct Silence" in the update (from May 12, 2022). THANK YOU ALL for the vigilance! —RL

This message is for all the people who have subscribed to the reissue program of Horace Tapscott & The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra.
I personally subscribed to it in April 2023 when it was launched. All subscribers had the choice to receive each volume separately or two by two etc, or wait the whole series to receive it in one time.
At first I decided to wait but in October i found two strange things. First the volumes were not published in order from 1 to 11 but in disorder. Secondly there have been a delay of several weeks but we didn’t receive any information about this. I had to write twice to get the information. Considering this situation I have decided to ask them to ship the volumes that are already available but after 3 emails I get no answer from Nimbus West. So I wonder if others people have that kind of problems.
Thank to let me know in advance.

Thank you for this blog. I rarely comment and should say thank you more often.

My request is about a concert I went to over 30 years ago.
It was in Bruxelles at the Ars Musica Festival 1991.
MEV played there and also Roscoe Mitchell (Twice)
one of the two was with two drummers, two bassists and his solo sax.

If there are recordings I'd love to hear that again.

Hello,

I've been searching for an artist's work, the Smoke - s/t, but it's so hard to find cause the name is so universal and misleading.
it's published by a label related to MPS, which is .

Thank you in advance!

correct silence said...

@Krayola
I just needed few seconds to find it, I just typed the words : "smoke, mps, at discogs" and the first result was this
https://www.discogs.com/fr/release/1273139-Smoke-Everything

I don't know this band and the music but looking at the musicians we can see the name of Curtis Clarke, very famous pianist for fans of Nimbus West records or fans of Nederland jazz.

Ernst Grgo Nebhuth said...

Just wanted to share the same information regarding Smoke. Plus I've found that there was a first LP by this ensemble on a sublabel of MPS.
https://www.discogs.com/master/995122-Smoke-Smoke

Even a download of the second LP on MPS is available as official download at Qobuz: https://www.qobuz.com/de-de/album/everything-smoke/4056813014419

The first one I could not find at Qobuz.

And not at least some more info about the group at Edel Records which now owns the MPS catalogue (and maybe the sublabels as well): https://www.mps-music.com/releases/httpwww-deezer-comalbum13848152/

Ernst Grgo Nebhuth said...

Hi fent99 - thank you for the share. But the music you've shared here is from another group.

This is the group: https://www.discogs.com/de/artist/302911-The-Smoke

And that's the requested group: https://www.discogs.com/de/artist/263403-Smoke-4

Cheers

fent99 said...

Thanks Ernst
Pretty sure it's the first album from the Discogs link for the requested group: https://www.discogs.com/de/artist/263403-Smoke-4 (there was some art from that other group there too which was confusing), same music as the youtube links on the discogs page though these mp3s sound much less scratchy.
The 2 albums have only Woody Webb in common, the second sounds more interesting...
https://www.mps-music.com/releases/httpwww-deezer-comalbum13848152/
Akira Tana's reminiscences https://www.psychedelicbabymag.com/2021/06/akira-tana-jazz-legend-interview.html
A more recent appearance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F6UeHQArZI&list=OLAK5uy_m2DCX6b2QLY05yozh3gTUxLt9jjqxIsLw&index=19 as Salah Webb
Interesting the paths these things take you down.

Ernst Grgo Nebhuth said...

Hi fent99 - I've only saw the cover in the folder and did not listen to the music. That's why I thought it is a link for the group "The Smoke".
Anyway - it is really interesting to follow these paths. It's one of the pleasures while searching and researching. Even if I do not enjoy the music it is (almost) always a journey - and a pleasant one I would like to add.

Hello
I'm doing some research about a french musician called Jean Frenay. In 1967 he played piano behind Marion Brown during one concert in Paris. In 1968 he switched to saxophone tenor and had a quartet with François Tusques, Beb Guerin and Aldo Romano or Jacques Thollot. DUring this year he regularly played in the various groups of François Tusques. He was in the "comité d'action musique". He stayed in France until the end of 1968 and then disappeared suddenly. François Tusques told me that perhaps Jean Frenay tryed to go to America but we can't be sure of it. If someone have informations about him, you can reply here.
