Wadada Leo Smith Golden Quartet / Roscoe Mitchell & Mike Reed Duet - Théâtre du Châtelet, 19th October 2015

Here's a recording from France Musique of a concert earlier this week at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the AACM. Two sets, the first from Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet, and the second a duet between Roscoe Mitchell and Mike Reed. Thoroughly excellent, especially the blistering performance by Roscoe Mitchell.

I've not done much editing into separate pieces, mainly because the radio presenter speaks over the intro and outro, and at various times to remind the radio audience who is playing. It's only a minor distraction however.

Golden Quartet
Wadada Leo Smith (trumpet / electronics)
Anthony Davis (piano)
John Lindberg (bass)
Mike Reed (drums)

Duet
Roscoe Mitchell (saxophones, flute)
Mike Reed (drums)

  4. I am attaching the announcement of the concert:

    THÉÂTRE DU CHÂTELET
    MONDAY 19 OCTOBER 2015 - 20H00

    JAZZ À CHICAGO / 50 ANS DE L'AACM

WITH THE FESTIVAL D'AUTOMNE À PARIS

A CONCERT TO CELEBRATE 50 CREATIVE YEARS OF THE AACM AND TO BRING TOGETHER THREE GRAND JAZZ GROUPS.

A musical and militant laboratory, the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) was created in 1965 in Chicago by pianist Muhal Richard Abrams with the intention of connecting musicians searching for new forms. Its impact is considerable in the history of 20th century music. Free-jazz was structured there and the members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago met there. It’s in Chicago that Afrobeat started to shine in the United States. Musical militancy and sonic experimentation were liked to the political movements of the time that defended rights, like the Black Panthers, the National of Islam and Racial Equality. Three historic figures from the AACM, all composers and each with their own groups, have reassembled at the Théâtre du Châtelet for an exceptional anniversary concert - Wadada Leo Smith, Roscoe Mitchell and Henry Threadgill.

  11. Great share, Tantris!
Especially as I struggled with buying the new duo CD from Roscoe Mitchel and Mike Reed.
Now I can listen before buying...

At the time being I come back to Roscoe Mitchell (his new recording on Nessa is strong!), Wadada Leo Smith with his load of recent releases.
But also Bill Dixon - yesterday I've listened to "November 1981" twice.....
