THEO LOEVENDIE - THE DUTCH JAZZ SCENE (1969) AND DUTCH JAZZ SCENE REVISITED (1977)








Here are a few morsels of Theo Loevendie from transcription recordings made for Radio Nederland. The 1969 recordings include his trio and consort and the 1977 recording is of the consort. I have not separated the latter line-ups, since the details are not clear. Let me know if you have better information!

    Thanks - pretty insatiable Loevendie fan here. I'll try to sort out any details I can upon listening unless someone beats me to it. The 1969 box has been on my LP wants list for quite some time. Unfortunately the last couple to pop up on eBay have been in rather scummy condition... the '77 box has some tasty bits on it, too, though a lot of it is more straight-ahead or traditional.

    OK, well the '69 Consort (on Mr. Brook) was this band... In addition to the wonderful LP "Chess" on Catfish the group also performed & made recordings at the Antibes Festival the same year. Though brief, the Antibes set is I believe the best recording I've heard by that band. "Mr. Brook" (or "Mr. Broek") is an incredible tune at faster tempos.

    "Zero" sounds like Leo Cuypers on piano (who was in the Consort as well around that time, appears on Chess!) and Han B is on additional percussion. Interesting tune for sure. It could be from slightly later (1970). So I'd say:

    Loevendie's Kwartet w/ Dulfer, Gorter & Van Duynhoven was really something else at that time.
