THEO LOEVENDIE - THE DUTCH JAZZ SCENE (1969) AND DUTCH JAZZ SCENE REVISITED (1977)
Here are a few morsels of Theo Loevendie from transcription recordings made for Radio Nederland. The 1969 recordings include his trio and consort and the 1977 recording is of the consort. I have not separated the latter line-ups, since the details are not clear. Let me know if you have better information!

Thanks - pretty insatiable Loevendie fan here. I'll try to sort out any details I can upon listening unless someone beats me to it. The 1969 box has been on my LP wants list for quite some time. Unfortunately the last couple to pop up on eBay have been in rather scummy condition... the '77 box has some tasty bits on it, too, though a lot of it is more straight-ahead or traditional.
ReplyDeleteOK, well the '69 Consort (on Mr. Brook) was this band... In addition to the wonderful LP "Chess" on Catfish the group also performed & made recordings at the Antibes Festival the same year. Though brief, the Antibes set is I believe the best recording I've heard by that band. "Mr. Brook" (or "Mr. Broek") is an incredible tune at faster tempos.
ReplyDeleteTheo Loevendie, alto, piano
Maarten van Regteren Altena, double bass
Joop Mastenbroek , baritone saxophone, percussion
Martin Van Duynhoven, drums
Hans Dulfer, tenor saxophone
Willem Van Manen, trombone
Nedley Elstak, trumpet, conga, perc.
(probably) Johnny Engels, drums
"Zero" sounds like Leo Cuypers on piano (who was in the Consort as well around that time, appears on Chess!) and Han B is on additional percussion. Interesting tune for sure. It could be from slightly later (1970). So I'd say:
Theo Loevendie, alto
Maarten van Regteren Altena, double bass
Leo van Oostrom, baritone saxophone
Martin Van Duynhoven, drums
Hans Dulfer, tenor saxophone
Willem Van Manen, trombone
Han Bennink, percussion
Leo Cuypers, piano
The 77 Consort is probably this:
Theo Loevendie, alto and soprano saxophone
Arjen Gorter, double bass
Bernard Hunnekink, trombone
Bob Driessen, alto saxophone
Boy Raaymakers, trumpet
Jim Van Der Valk-Bouman, trombone
Martin Van Duynhoven, drums
Oh yes & Dulfer on the '77 session too.
ReplyDeleteLoevendie's Kwartet w/ Dulfer, Gorter & Van Duynhoven was really something else at that time.
Grazie mille/Thanks/Hvala lepa

ReplyDeleteHi anonymous
ReplyDeleteI have the "Revisited" LP set. From the 1969 set, I have rips of this, the ICP sessions (Mengelberg, Breuker) and the sessions by Hans Dulfer's Heavy Soul Inc., which are posted on IS in the comments on the wonderful MAINE
Thanks Clifford, for your in-put on the line-ups.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to recommend again Hans Dulfer - "The Formative Years - 68-98" CD box, which has the Heavy Soul Inc album, both Ritmo Natural albums and El Saxofon with Frank Wright, and more!
ReplyDeleteAccording to a stapled promo pack that came with my copy of Revisited, the 1975 consort is as follows:
ReplyDeleteBoy Raaymakers tpt
Charlie Nanlohy tpt/flhn
Willem van Manen tb
Bernard Hunnekink tb
Jim van der Valk tb
Theo Lovendie ss
Bob Driessen as
Hans Dulfer ts
Leo van Oostrom bari-s
Harry Sparnaay bass-cl
Arjen Gorter bass
Martin van Duynhoven drums
recorded November 13, 1975 in Amsterdam
Ah yes, I keep forgetting that box came out. I have all of those on LP and can recommend the early sessions highly!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nick, for these Loevendie tracks. Like Clifford, I'm a "pretty insatiable" Loevendie fan. These Antibes recordings, anyone?
ReplyDeleteHi Mattw
ReplyDeleteIs there any chance that you might copy or post the promo pack for us, please? It would be great to add the sections that go with this and possibly some of the other sessions later.
Hi Nick,
ReplyDeleteI'll see what I can do -- might be a little while before I can scan anything.
Thanks, Nick! I'm glad the RS link is still active.
