BADEN BADEN NEW JAZZ MEETING 1975 "TEN YEARS GLOBE UNITY ORCHESTRA"

Here we have another installment of the Baden Baden Free Jazz Meetings.
This post of the concerts/rehearsals is not complete.
Several titles were released and are still available and therefore not included here.

I'm indebted to Peter Losin for his detailed information regarding line-up and titles - I took the freedom to duplicate it here with some minor changes. (Miles Ahead)

Notes:

Some of the music from the Workshop portion of this set (discs 1-3) has been issued commercially: "Every Single One of Us is a Pearl," "Ruby, My Dear," and "Kunstmusik II" on Pearls (FMP 0380), and "Jahrmarkt" on Jahrmarkt/Local Fair (Po Torch PTR/JWD 2). These titles were recorded November 25-27 at the Südwestfunk Studios in Baden-Baden during the New Jazz Meeting dedicated to "Ten Years Globe Unity Orchestra."

For Part 2 of Kowald's "Jahrmarkt," the group is divided into six small groups throughout in the studio. From left to right in this recording:

Kowald (tuba), Schlippenbach (acc), Brötzmann (cl)
Parker (ss), Wheeler, Rutherford
Christmann, Niebergall, Lovens
Braxton
Mangelsdorff, Dudek (ts)
Rava, Carl (ts), Pilz

The issued version of "Jahrmarkt" is presented as a single performance but in fact -- because of the logistics of arranging musicians in groups around the studio -- it was recorded in three pieces.

Rutherford's "Hip Hymn No. 2" also involved complicated logistics. The musicians are arranged in four groups from left to right:

Braxton, Dudek, Parker, and Wheeler
Christmann and Brötzmann
Schlippenbach, Kowald, Niebergall, and Lovens
Rava, Carl, Pilz, and Mangelsdorff

In addition, Rutherford prepared a tape of the synthesizer part, and the group played on top of it.

Discs 4-5 were recorded during a public performance on November 28 at Kurfürstliches Schloss in Mainz.

Baden-Baden New Jazz Meeting 1977

The picture above depicts a part of the interior of the Kurfürstliches Schloss in Mainz, Germany. Some may wonder what the Schloss had to do with the annual Treffen in Baden-Baden, but as it happened, the 1977 Treffen culminated in a concert in front of an audience at the Schloss. The concert took place after rehearsals at the SWR studios in Baden-Baden, the usual locality of the Treffens over the years.

In contrast to the 1970 Treffen which we posted a little while ago, the 1977 one was a more consolidated affair with a smaller cast of characters. The core appears to be Mumps, a slightly extended version of the John Surman - Barre Phillips - Stu Martin trio with Albert Mangelsdorff making it a quartet. To this core is added vocalist Karin Krog (whose collaborations with Surman have continued apace ever since), guitarist Attila Zoller, trumpetist Tomasz Stanko, pianist Stan Tracey, tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin and bassist Motoharu Yoshizawa. The brunt of the cast was also on the 1970 sessions, leaving Griffin, Tracey and Yoshizawa as the new ingredients to the mix.

As usual there are full group performances as well as several splits into duos and trios, though no pure solo performances on this set of tunes. Less rowdy and rambunctious than some of the predecessors, the accent is here on solidly grounded modern jazz, some anchored in reworkings of Monk standards, others venturing into ambient landscapes - with synths and abstract vocalese. Some of the rehearsal pieces reappear in the concert, also a regular feature of the Treffens.

I can't dish up seven hours this time, but there should be enough here to sink one's tastebuds into. I find myself liking this set better than some of the earlier ones, possibly because it sounds more coherent and consoliated. In any case, enjoy!

Cast of characters:

Albert Mangelsdorff, trombone;

Barre Phillips, bass;
Motoharu Yoshizawa, bass;

Baden-Baden Free Jazz Meeting 1970

This scenic picture of downtown Baden-Baden is meant to signal more vintage goodies from the annual free jazz meetings in that town in Southwest Germany. We have posted excerpts from the 1967, 1969 and 1971 meetings before and we will have the 1977 coming up in a little while. So now for the 1970 set which I think is the most complete of the ones we have posted up to now. I had a set which ran to about six hours and thirty minutes, but this set adds another hour and introductions to most of the pieces heard.

This is recorded off radio, medium wave I would think. They are all in mono, though the intros indicate they were also broadcast in stereo. The introductions are by Joachim E. Behrendt most likely, the driving force behind these annual meetings. Occasionally one hears communications bursting in on the radio frequency, but not too often, fortunately.

I've been listening to these recordings over the last few weeks. There's too much in there to be summarised in a few sentences, but suffice it to say that the line-up reads like a who's who of European-based musicians in the impro-free jazz spectrum round about 1970. Most were invited, but some actually came along out of curiosity, like John Surman's Trio, and promptly sat in on several sessions.

These recordings feature all possible combinations, from the full free jazz orchestra to small groups to duos to solo performances. All in all, a treasure trove of what was happening at that particular point in time. The set lists are found with the individual zipped files in the comments section. Seven cdr-equivalents in all, running for about seven hours and thirty minutes. Thanks to Onx and a US-based trading partner for supplying the yummies. On to you, dear folks!

Baden-Baden Free Jazz Meeting 1969

Some of you may recall this album which was out on the MPS label in 1970. It featured American and European musicians in the free jazz idiom, many of the former affiliated with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), based in Chicago. The colloquial title, "Gittin' to know y'all" underlined the Baden-Baden sessions as a meeting point and as a meeting of minds.

Of course, the record could only be an excerpt of everything that happened, so here is a much fuller compilation of the meetings. I can't say whether this one is truly comprehensive, but in any case, what's on the table are approximately three and half hours of collaborations. This is a follow-up to earlier postings of the 1967, 1971 and 1976 meetings. We still have the 1970 and 1977 sessions to go, so hang in there.

The facts of the matter:

Baden-Baden Free Jazz Meeting 1967 and more

 We had requests for some of the Baden-Baden Free Jazz Meetings recently, so I thought it opportune to check the archives for more of these meetings. What's offered here are three sets, the first of which are excerpts from the 1967 meeting, the second is also at the Süd-West Rundfunk studios in Baden-Baden, but a little bit previous to the actual meeting of that year, and the third is unrelated, made for Radio Bremen, but also from 1967.

Also opportune to put Joachim-Ernst Behrendt at the top, the producer of both the Baden-Baden sessions and a key figure in bringing jazz to the public in Germany. The Baden-Baden meetings were very much his idea and he kept them going for years. We'll get to the 1970 and 1977 meetings in a little while.

The first set (bb67-1):

These were all recordings made by "sammler kk" and made available on the Dime torrent site in late 2007. None of these recordings has to my knowledge been publically released.

Baden Baden-Free Jazz Meeting ,Dec 1971-Dudu Pukwana,C.Mcgregor,B.Phillips, T.Rypdal, B.Greene,M.Pilz, H.Joos, M.Falay.A.Skidmore

Here's ,an Incredible document of several
concerts recorded over a few days in Dec 1971.

Got this from an online acquaintance recently , who Sourced it from soul seek , Unfortunately all i have is an Mp3 Version ... we would certainly welcome a loss less share of this.. if anyone who has it is willing to oblige.

This set sort of ties in with the numerous,quality South African selections on offer here recently...

Not much point talking about the performers themselves ,since most have already been introduced here and elsewhere.
As far as i Know The free jazz meetings in Baden Baden ,were inaugurated in the mid 60'S by Critic Joachim E. Berendt.. and are still an occasional feature of the live scene...

Herbert Joos may be unfamiliar , he's probably best Known as a mainstay of the Vienna Art Orchestra , though back in the 70's , he made a few interesting solo albums ,and even recorded in trio format for FMP.

Fans of GUO, Alan Silva's Celestial Orchestra, Francois Tusques inter communal music and other Sonic LOVE fests will Find plenty to enjoy! .. a gamut ranging from 'Afro Rock,' Qwela Tinged pieces through to freebop, psychedelicious 'Bitches Brew 'style rock vamps... great percussion jams,and best of all ferocious Free improv over long droning horn ostinati ... this has it all!

Among the highlights featuring Some of the most electryfying performances in this set, for me are the trio-to quintet pieces featuring Terje Rypdal in completely free mode..taking it beyond Hendrix and even early Sonny Sharrocks fiercest sonic abstractions.
Splendid stuff which clearly presages the material on Rypdal's Great album 'What comes after' ECM 1031, a few of which pieces are present in skeletal form.

There's also a magnificent sprawling version of Barre Phillips, just 8.. (disc-2) which some may remember from the unique, Japo LP 'For all it is'( Japo, 60 003) recorded in March of the same year.

Grab it, enjoy.. and consider buying some of the performers discs .... Early Rypdal for example is on the whole pretty special.
Kudos to whomever taped this ... !
