Helen Merrill is as far as i know still recording...and well worth supporting !

ReplyDeleteHelen Merrill is just about my favorite singer ever, and this is a real gem; never heard it or heard of it till now. I would have moved to Japan a long time ago if I had only known she was there! Thank you for this and your entire blog.

WOW. A name I had heard, but was completely unfamiliar with. What a revelation! Similar to hearing "Comme a la Radio" for the first time, a sparkling combination of amazing musicians with spectacular vocal interpretation. Thank you Sotise. My quest to hear more Helen has begun. ReplyDeleteTry a shade of difference, and the feeling is mutual from the mid 60's, both currently available..
they are this great, if a touch straighter, the music makers on owl with Lacy,Casa forte 1980.. not to mention all the great 50's records,not least the stunning 1954 self titled debut..
lots of kitschy specialty albums too made mainly for the japanese pop market... bossa, beatles, folk etc
Worked fine on first try, using Chrome. Link at the bottom of the page, as said by poster up above.No need to clear/delete/digest cookies. As for the substantive content, it shall be inspected in due course.

ReplyDeleteShe really is/was a wonderful vocalist, never afraid to take chances and pairing her with Gary Peacock was an inspired choice. This was recorded when Gary was living in Japan and for those interested the pianist and drummer on this date are Masahiko Satoh and Motohiko Hino.
Gary's two albums with this trio "Eastward (1970)" and "Voices (1971)" are also worth hearing.

ReplyDeletethis is a great album. helen always loved a conversational bassist; check her on multiple dates with ron carter. funny, morton and cook in the penguin guides express that peacock was on hiatus from music during his years studying macrobiotics in japan, before manfred of ecm persuaded him to come back to it, and thus was born the jarrett/dejohnette standards trio. this album among many others (even on columbia label) prove that you can't form a history of an artist or a movement from merely the records you happen to have access to at the store. they obviously needed to take inconstant sol into account!!!!!!!!
