SABU TOYOZUMI "MESSAGE TO CHICAGO" NADJA (Trio) 1974

This was a request by Intempestif some months ago.

Sabu Toyozumi should be known enough - playing and recording with Peter Brötzmann frequently. Yoshisaburo (Sabu) Toyozumi was/is a member of the AACM - as far as I know the only foreign member of this splendid organisation.
Here they play music from Roscoe Mitchell and Malachi Favors.

Yoshisaburo "Sabu" Toyozumi, percussion
Syoji Ukaji, baritone saxophone
Ryoh Hara, piano
Yoshiaki Fujikawa, alto saxophone (only tr.3)

1. Roscoe's Tune : Odwalla 16:26
2. Malachi's Tune 10:25
3. People In Sorrow 23:14

Recorded at Jazz Corner MAMA, Kohriyama, Japan on October 20, 1974.

PJL ‎– MTCJ 5507 (cd-rip)

  2. Bloody hell, I've been dying to hear this one for quite some time! I also posted a request for it here couple of months ago. Finally i can strike it off my "most wanted" list. Man, both your contributions today are pure gold!!! Thank you very much (again)!

  3. Just finished listening to this one and it's fantastic! I never heard of either saxophone players before. Looks like each of them have albums under their names, I wonder how difficult would it be to track down some of these...
I recently read the book about AACM written by George Lewis (one of the best books on music, in my opinion), and Sabu Toyozumi is mentioned there only once, as being one of the two drummers of a group assembled by Steve McCall in late 1971, which also included Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Malachi Favors, Douglas Ewart, young George Lewis, etc. I'm pretty sure Sabu wasn't an AACM member officially, although he played with many AACM musicians in Chicago. The book also mentions Steve McCall's sister, Rochelle McCall Toyozumi...

  5. I also read the book and agree with you that it is one of the best books on music. My impression was that Toyozumi is a member "honoris causa".

There is a recently reissued recording from Itaru Oki "Phantom Note" on Doubt Records. This is the only other recording with Yoshiaki Fujikawa I know about.
From Syoji Ukaji I have another (deleted) CD from Itaru Oki "Shirasagi". Both albums were recorded in the mid-seventies.

Japanese Free Jazz is very hard to come by - be it LPs or CDs.
But from the recordings I have heard certainly worth to check out.

  6. I've been looking for "Shirasagi" for a while, without success. I've got an impression it's never been released outside Japan.
There are two Yoshiaki Fujikawa & EastAsia Orchestra albums here:

I agree, most Free Jazz recordings from Japan are quite rare and would be greatly appreciated here...

  13. Is this a re-post,a delete, or a mistaken re-post?
If it's a re-post, then a new link is sorely needed.
I'd love some clarification from someone.
    Thanks!

  15. @onxidlib:

Thanks for that clarification. May I suggest
that Sabu Toyozumi: Message To Chicago be
removed from New Links To Old Posts, since
it's in reprint? Otherwise, the innocent
will think that there is an active
Inconstant Sol link to a lossless share,
    which there isn't. Thanks!

    Best
