Here is the next item in my german series. Early Free Jazz from Manfred Schoof and his Sextet.
By the way - I don't think that I am a specialist in this special department of music. I am interested in creative music - primarly coming from the Jazz heritage - and as I live in Germany it makes sense to me to try to discover also this tradition. But my (musical) interests are much more global . So - don't be surprised or disappointed if there will be music from other parts of our planet. Off course you won't be...

ReplyDeleteWERGO and Jazz, there's not that much released in this combination. The only other ones I know of are Penderecki/Don Cherry "Actions" (originally on Philips, I believe) and the Bernd Alois Zimmermann WER 60031 with the Manfred Schoof Quintet featured on the Jazz improv. of "Die Soldaten" act 2, scene 2, and also featuring one track from "Die Befristeten" and "Tratto for Electronic Sounds." I'm looking forward to this Schoof on Wergo. Thanks!

There is another fantastic early Manfre Schoof. It's titel is "Voices" (1966) with Dudek, Schlippenbach, Niebergall and Liebezeit.

Onxidlib, thank you for posting these rare recordings. They are obscure enough to take some research to find out who plays on them. It would be much appreciated if you would list the musicians with your post. Alex von Schlippenbach is on this one and that will motivate me to pick it up (I am not so familiar with Schoof). My research says these are the musicians: Manfred Schoof D-trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn and perc, Gerd Dudek tenor, sopran and clarinet and perc, Alexander von Schlippenbach piano and clavier and perc, Buschi Niebergall bass, Jacky Liebezeit perc and Sven Åke Johansson perc. Recorded in 1967. Please correct if in error.

I only realise now that it's useful to post the lineup not only in the files but with the announcement as well - sorry.
As for "Horns" or any other FMP recording - I was told that all posts/files in the blogosphere are "bound" to be deleted almost immediately after they appear.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
By the way - clavier is the german word for piano - nowadays written as Klavier.

ReplyDeleteThe WERGO jazz connection indeed has much to do with Bernd Alois Zimmermann, the composer of the opera 'Die Soldaten' --- Zimmermann was a mentor to Schippenbach, and Schlippenbach's group played in Zimmermans' opera (the Michael Gielen-conducted recording is on Wergo, as is Zimmermann's 'Requiem for a young poet', also with jazz elements --- WERGO was and is the record-issuing department of Schott, the music publishers who published a lot of post-WW II avant garde classical music.

The original cover I got later after posting - in the files is "only" an alternate cover-scan from a friend who has the lp/version in his collection.
This lp itself is not in my collection - I borrowed it and made a rip (24bit than to 16bit for burning + sometimes a little bit and very careful cleaning with magix)
I do not own a digital-camera and my scanner is too small to scan the whole cover in one piece.
So the covers and/or artwork is mostly from the net or provided by friends.
