ITARU OKI "PARIS - OHRAI" 2001

As I'm now running short of german OOP I will continue mostly with japanese recordings.
On this recording still one german musician is participating - Michel Pilz.

Itaru Oki started playing Free-Jazz in the late sixties. In 1969 he joined the experimental unit
"ESSG" of Masahiko Togashi and Masahiko Sato(h).
After he finished his first tour in Europe as member of the group "Kanno" he formed the Itaru Oki trio which later become a quartet.
In 1974 he moved to Paris where he still resides (to my knowledge)
With Noah Howard he gave a concert in Berlin and recorded "Schizophrenic Blues" for FMP in 1977.
He also founded a trio with Buschi Niebergall and Michel Pilz with whom he still plays.
With Michel Pilz he recorded at least three other recordings. "Jamabiko" to be found on the blog of your confidence:

and "One Year - Afternoon & Evening" for FMP as well - plus later "Melu-Sina" on Drops Records.

  1. This looks great, thanks again! I really like Itaru Oki, especially the group with Pilz. I've heard the albums you mention, but I'm still looking for the albums that came out under his name in the '70s. The one called "Phantom Note" has been recently reissued, but the rest of them are OOP as far as I know. And some of them were probably only released in Japan.

  2. Onxidlib, music by Japanese musicians would surely be appreciated here. (you mentioned a couple of posts back that you have "Shirasagi". I'd love to hear it if you decide to post it some day). Thanks

  3. Excellent pick, folks. Will welcome too some japanese free jazz... They did so highly idiosyncratic music in the 1970s and still do. Wish you could all visit the average DiskUnion in Tokyo - scary.

Just to let you know - if you're around Paris, record shop Souffle Continu has lots of Itaru Oki "OOPs" (they're not actually, you can even contact Ohrai: ohrairecords@yahoo.co.jp - it's rather his music on Fudebushow that's impossible to find, even in Japan) - Oki still has a stock. They're all worth checking, and he deserves to be supported.

For those who are interested I will post very soon on my web site his complete discography, he has released 65 albums so far...

Public appeal: we are looking for:
    - Itaru Oki Trio "Trumpet in Modern Jazz", Toshiba TW-6045 (1970)
    - "Trio by trio plus one", Yosuke Yamashita + Itaru Oki + Kimiko Kasai, hideously rare double LP on Victor Japan (1971).
Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

  4. This looks great indeed, thank you Onxidlib.
It's funny to read the title of the fifth track (a little taste of garlic) while I just cut a piece of garlic before visiting IS, and my kitchen is full of this fine perfume !

  6. @ Frédito

if you like this recording with Michel Pilz you should really check out his other recordings on IS.

    @ IB

my research led me to the conclusion that this recording is really out of stock. As I don't want to take anything away from the musicians whose work I love and respect I will delete the download links tonight.

Sorry! - especially to Itaru Oki.

  8. Beautiful coming of a Météore, after the storm (Tempête)
I wonder who plays piano on this piece.

  9. Alan Silva is playing the piano - that's my assumption.

  11. Many thanks for finding this, kinabalu

....and onxidlib, the more Japanese OOP albums the better as far as I'm concerned. Thanks once again for all the wonderful music you've shared here over the years.

  14. I would say umiddelbar and Onx would say unmittelbar, which is pretty much the same word.

Very fine record, this one, having had a chance to listen while reuploading, so definitely a good idea to have it back in circulation. That quartet is dynamite!
