Sun Ra Archestra - Live in Rome '80

Having listened to many Sun Ra concerts during the years
(Arkestra,small combos,solo), i can say that the level/quality
was very inconstant, from very good to tedious : this one is
good (in my opinion).
Taped by "Ilario" during the March 1980 tour.

Thanks to c & nikos for having titled the tracks !

  1. Just before posting i've discovered that dustygroove is near (around January 15, 2010) to release, probably, the same concert. In any case, for the moment, this is an "inedited", so here are the links :

  2. Does somebody remember if on the same tour they played also Genova?
I remember that concert but can't remember the year and, strangely, it is not on any Sun Ra sessionography. And many thanks for this, of course!

  3. @ roberto t.

the same year, on April 1, the
    Arkestra played at Teatro Margherita
    in Genova.

  8. The missing titles in C's setlist:
    2. Inside The blues
    5. Yeah Man!
    7. Limehouse Blues
    8. Watusi
    14. [cuts in >] Exotic Forest [incomplete]
    15. King Porter Stomp
One possible doubt: This JUST might be a pastiche of some bits from the Rome show and some from the Genova show mentioned in the other comments.. Parts of the song-list look suspiciously similar to the Genova set-list as given in R. Campbell's sessionography..
Thanks a LOT for this Riccardo. More Sun Ra would always be welcome. You are right, the shows are uneven (the chants and recitations especially, are of the you-had-to-be-there type I think), but the high pints are high indeed!

  9. Thanks Nikos for the additions. This setlist is similar to the Milan and Bourg-la-Reine shows, and I do have an audience tape of this Rome show somewhere which I am unable to compare with this at the moment. I don't think I have the Genova to cross-check, but I am sure this will get figured out. Though I don't doubt Riccardo's tapes either, so this might all be Rome?
1980 was a tremendous year for the Arkestra. The set pieces get repetitious, but the improvs are WILD.

  10. @ C & nikos

    many thanks for the "job"

for clarity : i only have this
concert from the 80 tour (taped by Ilario), as i pointed out above,
this is the Roman concert, personally
i've been at the concert in Milan
(Teatro Orfeo, March 24) but didn't
    tape it.

  11. Transparency has now issued this as "LIVE IN ROME". It gives the date as March 28, 1980, not March 29. It has a couple of short chants after "Space Is The Place" that are not on the post, but "Exotic Forest" is unfortunately again cut and incomplete. The sound is marginally better on the Transparency. We did a better job with the song list!

  12. @ nikos
many thanks for clarification that transparency's live in rome 1980-03-28 and riccardo's/ilario's live in rome 1980-03-29 are one and the same concert. when i got news about new transparency release i had suspicions that they did release different concert. i got also just recently very high opinions about this new transparency 2 cd set. now i know that i do have it for over 4 months.

    @ riccardo and illario

many many thanks for this post. it's never too much of good sun ra music.

    regards.
