Alan Silva, Marshall Allen, William Parker - Vision Festival 2000

Here is another great concert that appeared on dime recently (thanks jeffgmorris). The music covers a wide gamut of emotions, and the interplay between Alan Silva and Marshall Allen - who is absolutely red hot - is particularly effective. Very good sound quality.

Vision Festival, New York City
23rd May, 2000

Alan Silva (p, synth)
Marshall Allen (ts, fl)
William Parker (b)

It would be great to get comments and responses to the music from the many people who download from this blog!

  3. Great posts , great music , wish I lived in Europe where this music is far more accepted , it only gets played on the radio where I live because of a college radio station and only for a hour between 11 and 12 on Tue nights with very few listeners , sometimes I get the chance to do the show with the host website is (www.chrwradio.com) . This music is not very well received in North America ( Canada ).

  4. A comment? Alan Silva can do no wrong in my book! He's been getting it right for about 45 years.

  5. Looking forward to hearing this one, though may take me a while to download, being FLAC...Marshall Allen participates in one of the videos on youtube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=JboA9PumtDY).

Jazzme, I'm not sure the situation is much better in Europe than America. I don't think the music is very well (or widely) received anywhere! I got the chance to see Sonny Simmons on his UK tour, and there can't have been many more than 40 people watching

  6. Marshal Allen and Silva made me think I was listening to a Sun Ra Trio with some Monkish compositions sneaking through in the last part of the set. AND Parker ain't bad either. All together a BRILLIANT performance! I don't think Allen has EVER SOUNDED ANY BETTER! This is a true gem. Thank you Tantris.

Victoriaville and duMaurier (now called something else) get nice audiences. So there are small pockets of listeners scattered around the world. BUT, in general, you are right Jazzme, only a small percentage of people here in N.America know what to make out of so called "free jazz." It's ironic that fans of this very intense and passionate music are at times regarded as elitist. A little more about that--

I went to a Julius Hemphill solo performance in the late 70s where, because of bad weather AND a lack of interest only 7 other people were there -- 8 TOTAL!! Hemphill went ahead and played and it was quite wonderful BUT in talking with him later he told me he'd played in Paris to crowds of 1 to 2 thousand people. On the other hand, he'd played (with some of the B.A.G. people) to some really small crowds in rural areas of Sweden. It was some sort of cultural exchange (grant funded) designed to showcase jazz but some of the audiences were stunned to silence at the end of the performances. It seems they were in a state of shock - I guess they thought they were going to get some "swing" or danceable music.

I don't know, I can move/dance to Allen's playing. It's very compelling. The pulse is there, all-be-it, outside the boundaries of usual tempos. Right?

  7. i like marshall allen a lot.

so in the end i did download these damn flacs ;-) and the braxtons too, of course. i expect i'll find time to say something about both at some point. meantime, thanks to boromir who suggested switch. very simple and useful! cos although i *could* play the files through vlc, i don't like using that unless i have to. very versatile, i also find it (predictably) unstable.

    cheers

  9. There is a flac plug-in for Winamp which is automatically installed in the most recent versions, so there is no reason to seek out special software for playing files in the flac format. I'm using Winamp for both flacs and mp3s (and even more obscure formats which I'm not going to mention here. Well, OK then - vw, shn and tta - the last one is a real headache.
