Thank you, Nick.
ReplyDeleteThis has a nice raw quality. To me unknown Kazumi Odagiri is obviously an accomplished player. But the group's way isn't too polished which is quite enjoyable.
Sounds like it was recorded at home. This is no surprise as 'Aketa No Mise' seemed to be a rather tiny club with place for about thirty listeners.
According Discogs he has recorded only once more. A program of Mingus tunes with Toshiyuki Miyama's New Herd.
Kazumi (sometimes misspelled "Katsumi") Odagiri was a member of Takeo Moriyama's quartet and can be heard on Moriyama's '78 release "Hush-a-Bye" (Union/Teichiku). Odagiri died of tuberculosis in 1980 at the age of 32.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mark for your input - so I could find another recording with Odagiri.

and a discography

Not sure anymore wether the New Herd LP "Gallery" is with Odagiri, despite the discography's entry.
ReplyDeleteOn "Gallery" the name reads Kazumi Oguro. And Kazumi Oguro plays on several New Herd recordings. But the transliteration from Japanese to English (or German) is sometimes a minor mess.
Thank-you very much
ReplyDeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteOdagiri is indeed credited on "Gallery," as a guest performer. He also guested on the New Herd's Mingus tribute "So Long Charles," recorded the same year (1979):

Kazumi Oguro was an alto player who was a regular member of the New Herd.
Thanks a lot for the introduction Nick.
