damn - BIG BIG DEEP THANKS - looked for this record in flac FOR YEARS
ReplyDeleteNow if only someone could post the first PIANO CHOIR album from Strata East....
Fantastic Nick. !! Jothan Callins is new to me. It reminds me of Pharoah Sanders. Awesome. Thank you so much

Thank you, Nick.
ReplyDeleteJust listening to the music. Except McBee and Callins the other musicians are unknown to me. Although I know Bonner and Connors by name. Obviously I haven't heard much music by them.
Callins played with Sun Ra from the 1980s onward. And Mr McBee - well he can be heard on more than 200 albums.
Thanks for this unknown bit of history.
Now "Sons And Daughters Of The Sun" is playing. Starts with a nice vamp. Callins seems to quote a known theme/motiv. But I can't identify it. Unpretentious but not unaspiring and it is grooving. No boasting from the players - I like it.
Also the last tune has a modest feel but it's a 'triumph', not overpowering yet self-assured with a final joyous dance.
I think it was Jothan's only recording as a leader, but I agree with Ernst that it grew on me from beginning to end.
ReplyDeletebeautiful!...
ReplyDeleteBIG THX!...
The wait was worth it!! Thanks

Yeah! Loving this Nick. Nice one. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteNorman Connors has some pedigree -- Archie Shepp, Sam Rivers, and Pharaoh Sanders...bought a copy of this at School Kids Records in Tampa, FL 1976! Thanks for your rip!
ReplyDeleteConsidering many of your others posts Nick, I didn't expect that kind of record coming from your generous contribution, a nice surprise and a very lovely album between Pharoah and Tolliver in my opinion, could have been produced on Strata East.

ReplyDelete-Norman Connors leader have two wonderful albums ( fusion or smoot jazz ) Dance Of Magic,Dark Of Light, with Carlos Garnett have ( for me ) the best spiritual jazz albums in Latin america ( and varius favorites for me ), with Dee Dee Bridgewater other favorite album for me : Afro Blue, the fabulous album Children Of Forever ( 1976 )
