JYM YOUNG'S SAN FRANCISCO AVANTGARDE "PUZZLE BOX" (INTERNATIONAL POLYDOR, 1966)
Not much is known (to me) about Jym Young.
He did play in 1964 with Sonny Simmons and Barbara Donald's band.
Also adding his piano to Dewey Redman's first LP "Look for the Black Star".
Later he became known as Waheem Young in the Bay Area - I even suspect he played piano for one tune on the Steve Miller Band's "Living In The 20th Century".
Bennett Friedman, tenor saxophone
Jym Young, piano, african thumb piano
Harley White, double bass
Jim Messinger, drums, indian snake charmer
A1. Puzzle Box 3:03
A2. Lament 13:01
B1. Possibility 10:28
B2. Skippin' In The Rain 7:18
Recorded December 31, 1966 in San Francisco.
INTERNATIONAL POLYDOR PRODUCTION 623 226 (Germany, 1967)

ReplyDeleteThanks onxidlib!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic album!! Never heard of Jym Young and the other players involved - to my ears this sounds like some of Coltrane's most inspired moments around 1964/65.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for sharing this absolute unknown gem, onxidlib!
Cheers,
Lucky :)
Really like this LP a lot. Jym/Waheem Young also played in Boz Scaggs' band for a bit. Bennett Friedman has been teaching jazz at the college level in California since the '70s, though he hasn't recorded too much. I believe Harley White is deceased, though there's a nice, brief interview with him here:

ReplyDeleteI would like to thank you also, Clifford. The take away from the interview you referenced was to "learn something everyday'. That is the reason I visit this site everyday, to learn something. Thanks!
