Thanks to those of you who have contributed to Kenny's welfare at this difficult time. Here's an update from the Ottawa Citizen.

As Sergio rightly says below, Kenny Wheeler was a true GIANT.
There are not many jazz musicians who have a foot in the freely improvised side of things and also compose and play some of the most beautiful and ravishing music in jazz, in anywhere.
Condolences to his family, friends and all his fellow musicians.
Thanks Kenny. You gave a lot and left a lot. Beautiful.
I'm very sad to say that Kenny has now left us. R.I.P.

I listened to Kenny the first time in the Nucleus "Solar Plexus" album, one of the first records I ever bought when I was a boy and since then I have not stopped loving his unique sound.
ReplyDeleteI had the great honor of knowing him personally (a shy and gentle man) and meet him many times as there was a period that he attended my area (the "deep" north-east of Italy), as well as to play, even for educational purposes. He also appears as a special guest on the very limited edition CD of the Friulian composer and pianist Glauco Venier dedicated to my town, Gorizia.
The notes of "Everybody's Song But My Own" will resound in my mind for a long time...
Kenny we will miss you.

ReplyDeleteI feel privileged to have seen Kenny in so many different settings, Indo-Jazz Fusions, Graham Collier, SME, Mike Gibbs, Stan Tracey, Louis Moholo etc etc and then his own groups and with Evan Parker, Globe Unity so many more. What a cv, what a musician and most of all what a wonderful person. Thanks Kenny you will not be forgotten.
