Dear friends and followers of Inconstant Sol
We do this re-up because there has been a so called reissue of this LP.
Take a look at discogs.
To put it frankly: It is a bootleg - and of course our post is technically the same.
But we feel there's a crucial difference - we don't ask you for twenty bucks....
What's more - we are meanwhile quite sure that the music you would hear on the LP is taken from our previous share here at IS.
Another point which should be mentioned is that not only Abraxas/Doxy isn't acting right toward the musicians, but it is also directly trying to scam customers.
Pushing the reissue as a "First edition of 500 numbered copies in a deluxe gold laminated jacket" (https://www.deep.hu/catalog/ACV2038) or "Limited, numbered pressing – on clear vinyl!" (https://www.dustygroove.com/item/724167) clearly ammounts to trying to get people to assume the product is high end.
Does "clear vinyl" really matter when you're pressing something which has been unprofessionally transfered from an LP to a digital file back to an LP?
Mentioning the "deluxe" aspect of the release and forgetting to write about this side of things is rather interesting...
We decided to do a reup again. This time including scans of the insert/liner notes (see above) which is not a part of the bootleg LP.
Best thing instead of buying bootleg vinyl would be to download here and to buy one of Sonny's recent releases on Improvising Beings.

ZOUNDS L-71863
Notes :
* : It is common practice among discographers to list Prince Lasha as the leader of this session. This short extract of a Fred Lyman interview suggests that this may not be exactly the case (courtesy of Ben Young and Marc Chaloin) : « ... mostly a jam-session [...] they were all in my studio, I don't know how they got these particular guys up there, it was probably Clifford Jordan got it together. And they just started to play and I started recording, and I played on it too, I played fluegelhorn on this track. And it turned out pretty good, [...] it was an example of what I liked to think music could be at that time. » According to Lyman, they picked up Don Cherry in the street…
** : Johann Heidenbauer suggests it could be read as crypted indication of the publishing date : L-7-18-63, i.e. Lasha, July 18, 1963.
*** : Read also the original liner notes (*.rtf format). Many thanks to A. Lukas for providing the original transfer, pictures of the original plain cardboard sleeve, labels, and liners notes, and to Pierre Crepon for relaying the info.

ReplyDeleteWow, what a lineup! Thanks very much, onxidlib!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to hear this for so long.
ReplyDeleteAnything with Sonny Simmons is a must listen. Incredible musician!
Thank you!
i can't imagine cliff got this together. with moffett and two double bassists it's more likely simmons' date. bill wood -- is that vishnu bill wood who handled bass for randy weston? niiice!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the FLAC.
ReplyDeleteNice to have an upgrade from my MP3@320
Yeah!!...thanks, mate...
ReplyDeleteFascinating line-up, many thanks!

I got this when it was first posted and did not say thank at the time so thank you now for this rare piece of American history!!!

Arthur, all serious Simmons fan has to listen to "Tales Of The Ancient East" once in his life.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm afraid that the status of Brandon's re-ups might be a bit fishy, to put it mildly, and if Brandon reads this, he should seriously consider getting back in touch with Sonny...
I don't put down Evans. A brilliant player, composer and arranger, he has prophesized downloadable music as early as 1999...
Thanks for this. The continuing effort to create vinyl-only fetish objects continues with the Frank Lowe Outloud double LP another recent example. While the Lowe record comes with the blessing and participation of his family, there's still no reason for it to be released on vinyl only at such a high price.
ReplyDeleteI second ushaped's complaint about vinyl fetish. With 2 little boys, who love to explore our music library, I'm not about to bring an expensive, deluxe set into the house. And yet, I'd love to hear the music.
ReplyDeleteIn this case, however, I thank the good people of inconstantsol. I've been tricked into buying bootlegs in the past. I appreciate that others are paying close attention, and of course I'm excited to listen to this session.
Cheers, all.
_Lee
Thanks Nick for your felicitous suggestion - I've added your proposal to the post.
ReplyDelete@unshaped, Triple point who put out the Lowe you refer to "Loud" and , Doxy the bootleggers of this lp are worlds apart, Loud was coordinated with both the surviving musicians and Lowe's estate...
ReplyDeleteDoxy just put out whatever they feel like.. including digital files sourced from the web...
The reality is that some collectors or fetishists pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars for jazz and free jazz lps... for anyone whos wondering.. Frank Lowes loud is a superior pressing compared to many contemporary lps... the vinyl is super quiet , the pressings are heavy , the gatefold jacket is thick and sturdy... the way records used to be made back in the 50's and 60's.
our mass consumer society is not geared towards production values such as those.. quality is expensive to produce, factor in the fact that the artists are well compensated for their work, and valued for a change...i don't understand why people are so furious... i certainly cant afford the NYAQ box but thats ok.. friends help out...its hard to imagine the music not coming out on cd sometime in the future.. the music is important and sonically very good.
why not simply stop buying second hand records from discogs or ebay , and buy only from labels concerned with ensuring the artists make a living.
here's another very strong recommendation from Improvising Beings expanding catalogue

truly stunning!...
The Johnson,Silva,Sato is indeed fabulous,Sotise! And IB are fast to respond to orders in this post jet-set age!
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting story.
ReplyDeleteI always have no good impression on those reckless reissues. DOXY is only one of many those similar trash labels nourished by the "vinyl revival" recently.
This confirms my distrust again.
Thank you, Onxi !
ReplyDeleteDanke.
ReplyDeleteThis is pretty cool/interesting music with direction and what might be a relatively unusual perch between some themes that seem quite familiar and new creations out on the edge. I'd not picked it up on the earlier round though was intrigued then, so thanks for the rerun/reminder.
Fantastic album by leading avant-garde musicians. Lost Generation is the best of the three. I wish it was available on CD.
ReplyDeleteFinally checked back here for "It Is Revealed", and boom! It is!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for posting this rarer-than-rare recording.
