HELEN MERRILL with the GARY PEACOCK TRIO "S'POSIN" (VICTOR/STORYVILLE, 1971)

The great Helen Merrill's most challenging, outer worldly record ever, featuring loose, free  highly textured arrangements by Masahiko Sato and Peacock, recorded just 4 months before the epochal "Samadhi' by the trio...
This also features a touching version of Ellington's 'In a sentimental mood' which is so obviously Gary Peacock's very moving tribute to Jimmy Blanton... beautiful oh so beautiful, painfully so..

Only reissued on Cd in Japan and out of print to the best of my knowledge ..
This rip is taken from the early 70's Storyville LP ..

Helen Merrill is as far as i know still recording...and well worth supporting !
she has a website here
ENJOY!!!!

  4. Hi Sotise. I'm very excited by this offering. The link is taking me to a page where the download button doesn't seem to do anything but the offer to subscribe is there. I was actually intending to subscribe, but surely I should be able to download this without doing so. Am I missing something do you think? Best wishes.

  5. Helen Merrill is just about my favorite singer ever, and this is a real gem; never heard it or heard of it till now. I would have moved to Japan a long time ago if I had only known she was there! Thank you for this and your entire blog.
Andy, I used the Download button at the bottom of the page, and although no bells and whistles went off, the file came over no problem. I'm using Safari on a Mac. You need to hear this!

  15. WOW. A name I had heard, but was completely unfamiliar with. What a revelation! Similar to hearing "Comme a la Radio" for the first time, a sparkling combination of amazing musicians with spectacular vocal interpretation. Thank you Sotise. My quest to hear more Helen has begun. (PS, no trouble for me to download using Chrome).

  16. Thank you sotise for this gem.
I would associate this kind of music with Jeanne Lee but not with Helen Merill.

  18. Vinyl lust, lots of wonderful Merrill around...

Try a shade of difference, and the feeling is mutual from the mid 60's, both currently available..

they are this great, if a touch straighter, the music makers on owl with Lacy,Casa forte 1980.. not to mention all the great 50's records, not least the stunning 1954 self titled debut..

lots of kitschy specialty albums too made mainly for the japanese pop market... bossa, beatles, folk etc

  22. I've been playing this all day today...it's FANTASTIC!..and it's a very nice sounding rip also..well done!
She really is/was a wonderful vocalist, never afraid to take chances and pairing her with Gary Peacock was an inspired choice. This was recorded when Gary was living in Japan and for those interested the pianist and drummer on this date are Masahiko Satoh and Motohiko Hino.
Gary's two albums with this trio "Eastward (1970)" and "Voices (1971)" are also worth hearing.

  25. this is a great album. helen always loved a conversational bassist; check her on multiple dates with ron carter. funny, morton and cook in the penguin guides express that peacock was on hiatus from music during his years studying macrobiotics in japan, before manfred of ecm persuaded him to come back to it, and thus was born the jarrett/dejohnette standards trio. this album among many others (even on columbia label) prove that you can't form a history of an artist or a movement from merely the records you happen to have access to at the store. they obviously needed to take inconstant sol into account!!!!!!!!

  26. thanks for this rare record by two favorite artists!

  29. Hey - this share is simply great. Finally I managed to give it a listen yesterday.
I am much more into intrumental music but this is easily on my top 10 list of vocal albums.
WHY has this sublime album seen no reissue?
Shall chceck out other recordings from Helen Merrill.
    Thank you, sotise!!!!!:-)!!!!

  32. Thanks for the Helen LP uploads, I thought I had all of her stuff, 'Sposin is indeed a really trippy work, even more than the one she did with the poet's interludes.
