  2. Thank you for posting this. I don't think this was part of the Muntu box.

Today February 26th is the day of Roy Campbell Jr.'s memorial service over at Roulette. Those able to get there should try to drop by. A few of his many projects will be presented. It starts at 6:30 p.m., I believe and will go to about 11:00 p.m.

On a happier note, there is a forthcoming session from Jemeel Moondoc which will include what I believe is Roy Campbell's last recording session. It will be released on Relative Pitch records and I am told that Jemeel was very happy with the recording and Roy's playing on it in particular.

We should support future projects from Jemeel. Keep your eyes posted for Kick-starter or other campaigns to fund his work.

  10. Anonymous, I know him also as Rashid Bakr, but on the back cover is spelled Baker, and so I report it

  11. Bakr now goes by Charles Downs. He still plays around NYC with some frequency.

He was on the bill last night with William Parker. I missed that part of the performance as I got there just after they finished. (Thank you MTA).

The Memorial was a great tribute to Roy's work. A virtual who's who of local NYC musicians. It featured many of Roy's projects including "Tazz" with Joe McPhee and Dennis Gonzalez, the Akhehaten (sic?) Ensemble, Nemesis, the Nu Band (with Mark Whitecage, Lou Grassi, Joe Fonda and guest Will Conell). It ended with an all-star big band which included Dave Douglas, Frank London, Ted Daniel, Taylor Ho Bynum, Lewis Barnes, Matt Lavell, Graham Haynes and Dennis Gonzalez to name only the Trumpeters.

They set up "The Roy Campbell Fund" as a tribute to him and you can make donations to it. Checks would go to Arts for Art, 107 Suffok Street #3.5, NY, NY 10002 or go to artsforart.org
