In Memoriam, Graham Rogers, aka glmlr- 1948-2013
a Friend and occasional contributor here , avid/rabid, music aficionado, who died of a heart attack in his home in Athens, dec 21st, he raved frequently about Sunny Murray's sizzle cymbal , and loved David Murray also.... R.I.P (whatever that means stripped of all religious context)
This is a great audience recording , one i often return to............He particularly liked it too.
Many thanks to whoever recorded this

glmlr - fellow music lover whose name I see often here. Remembrance from a stranger. And health in the new year to all of you here.
ReplyDeleteWith great disbelief I read this sad news. I loved this man and his comments, I felt it was a great lover of music and that he knew a lot about her.
ReplyDeleteGlory him, and let rest in peace.
It was ez to tell that GLMLR was one of the top sparkplugs for the Solar System right off the bat! The musical world has lost a vital member.
ReplyDeleteI am so very sorry to hear this. I got to know Graham quite well through this blog, and we shared a lot of music. My sincere condolences to his family.
ReplyDeleteThat is sad news and condolences to Graham's relatives. He sure contributed a huge amount to IS over the years.
ReplyDeleteHow very sad. I'll keep glmlr in good memory.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear of his passing - while I didn't know him personally, I've admired his taste and breadth of knowledge in music for a long time ...
ReplyDeleteI've learned so much from his posts and his passion for music has certainly enriched my life.
A much belated thanks and my condolences to his friends and family.
He will be remembered through the music he loved.
Rest in peace.
A sad loss - he will be sorely missed - my condolences to his friends and family at this difficult time
ReplyDeleteNever met Graham face to face but his mails were always very friendly.
ReplyDeleteSeveral times he offered his help without being asked.
Last time I remeber his support was with Cecil Taylor's "Praxis".
And that's what it's all about - practicing in (i.e. praxis) in caring for others.
My condolences to all who were close to him.
I'm very sorry to hear of glmlr - Graham - leaving us. Thanks for being there Graham.
ReplyDeletewell, thanks for sharing the news - we'd exchanged a few emails - was just thinking the other day that I owed him one - seems we'd 'rubbed shoulders' a few times at Keystone Korner waay back when - two things that spring immediately to mind are his sparkling rips of the rivers' Tuba Trio & his liner notes to Barry Guy's Portraits
ReplyDeleteVery sad news. I didn't have personal contact with glmlr but his love for the music was obvious.
ReplyDeleteRIP.
Sad news.
ReplyDeletewe corresponded, frequently over the last 6 or 7 years... arguing about music and politics the later of which he quite rightly despised, discussions about music were often amusing.... we exchanged data discs , and i often sent him rock i loved , that he thought was crap..... i ought to compile some choice quotes!
ReplyDeleteCaptain Beefheart ... how can you like that, he's the worst singer i've ever heard...Frank Zappa, unlistenable , no tone , awful...
Pere Ubu, Faust , Merzbow, K.Haino... complete and utter noise with no redeeming features, i'm not quoting verbatim his opinions were expressed with a wicked scathing humour...
I'll Miss Him!!!1
i should add that he also sent me music i didn't like, playfully , gleefully, challenging my assumptions, Jeff Beck, John mclaughlin, return to forever, etc
ReplyDeleteHere's a choice Graham anecdote about meeting elvin jones in a urinal!

I'm very sad, but I think that God wants people like Graham and Riccardo closer to Him!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to see this news. I've been an avid, relatively quiet reader of this blog for years, and glmlr's contributions were among some of the most appreciated by me, and clearly others. I'm sorry for the loss. My condolences to his family and friends.
ReplyDelete@Softnecleus what god?, leave her out of it...Graham was an atheist... if there is a god, she is our enemy, and hates us...
ReplyDeletehere we are on a tiny escapist hub, on a dying planet where the 5 or 10 percent, who own the whole damned thing, are ignoring every warning sign that we are consuming ourselves out of existence, all they are interested in is profit..
and they'll keep making it till there's nothing left and now half our miserable lives, are spent slaving just to pay the fucking rent which in Australia now consumes one third to half of a median wage.
(as a collective)are completely devoid of anything resembling genuine spiritual substance, our humanity is being drained, by the year ,the month even...
moral values are topsy turvey and fucked up, worse than ever... in our civilisation a man can win the noble peace prize, by waging deadly wars and assassinating people with drones , by being tight with and serving the interest of the rapacious corporations, which are profiteering, US out of existence.
we are alienated from one another, largely devoid of compassion and concern for our race, other species, this beautiful planet, we view each other more as objects to be either be exploited, or oppressors whom we must fear and or avoid...
in a sense graham got out just at the right time, his values were shaped by the altruism of the sixties , yet they were in the process of souring to bitter cynicism.
We all have our Graham anecdotes, I suppose. Here's mine: I had reupped a David Murray record from the 70s which sounded crappy, excessive compression, overall very muddy. Graham had the decorum not to say so in the comments section, but informed me by email. I said I concurred entirely, but it was the only one I managed to locate on the net. Whereupon Graham offered to rip his own copy, provided he could get his recording equipment to work. Lo and behold, it did and a decent rendering was eventually posted. What a guy, eh? A perceptive and incisive commentator and a generous contributor to the blog. Let's hope they still make 'em like that
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear this sad news. I'm among those who have lost a lot because they missed to get to know glmlr better.
ReplyDeleteAt first I was delighted to see the David Murray posting, but then the shock that it memorialised glmlr. A real loss to our community. Thanks for everything.
ReplyDeletetotally discumbobulated by this news--somehow visualized glmlr as a young, hip jazz skronkster and as such, not mortal ...
ReplyDeletemy respect for his obvious love of the music and generosity and my best wishes to those who loved him
Guys, may I ask for a repost of this one? Keep the momory alive. Cheers.
