M U J I C I A N - Liverpool 1989
Whooooooa! I thought this tape was a write-off but no - here is an absolute gem from the truly marvellous Mujician that was. The most musical of free improvising groups - time, no time, exquisite beauty, intensity, incredible interaction - it's all here. Check out Tippett's flight at about 12 minutes in with bass and drums and wish, like me, that they had worked as a trio too. Dunmall leaves his tenor in the case and wows on baritone and soprano. Listening to this has reminded me just how fantastic this group was. Take thirty seven minutes and have a listen and let me know what you think.
TONY LEVIN, drums
KEITH TIPPETT, piano
PAUL ROGERS, bass
PAUL DUNMALL, baritone and soprano sax

Let me know if it works. My first time.
Hey Andy, this is fascinating, some parts remind me incredibly (bass, drum and piano) at the best moments of psychedelic period of the late sixties - early seventies, and Dunmall, enchanting, sneaking on saxophone, increases the drama. The theme is easy develop to a certain anger, with nice drumming Tony Levin. Tippett on piano, perfect! Saxophone from time to time has a slight undertone East. Rogers violin bow does wonders, and there are sounds, similar percussion from Nepalese temples, everything is happens here ... I think this is one of the better performances. Thanks, I enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteFantastic Andy! Zippy is fast and simple, in a couple of minutes I downloaded it! I just started listening this marvellous set. A million of thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks again Andy
ReplyDeleteI agree with Vitko, perfect analysis. Andy, I wonder if this is the best Mujician performance I ever listened. The only problem is that it's... too short! I feel better after listening to it. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteAppreciated, thanks.
ReplyDeleteOh my word...there may be more from this gig after all...
ReplyDeleteThank you for the music and a lovely pic of Tony Levin.
ReplyDeleteHmm, I was there and will be interested to hear the (short IIRC) set again.
ReplyDeleteThanks
