MARIAN MCPARTLAND'S PIANO JAZZ WITH CECIL TAYLOR

Marian McPartland died last night.
I dug out an old hissy tape (the sound gets rather wobbly towards the end) and am posting it here in respect.
If anyone has this in better sound....

Just in mp3.

1. Part 1  27:56
2. Part 2  26:12

PLEASE LOOK DOWN THE COMMENTS FOR BVENTURE'S FLAC UPGRADE!!!

Thanks bventure.

  4. Thanks for sharing this. I just found out that she did a show with Taylor and it kind of blows my mind. But then she was a classy lady. The google search brought up your blog, which I follow -what were the chances?

  6. I first heard about this show by way of a recording in a local specialty import shop sometime in the early-mid 1980's [if memory serves]. I had recently bought Taylor's "Nefertiti The Beautiful One" on Arista and was looking for more. I knew nothing of Marian Mcpartland other than what I read on the LP jacket of this and the other album the store had, and I was not persuaded I'd care for it, afraid Taylor would 'hold back'. A couple of years later I read a review, in Cadence Magazine I believe, that changed my mind. But I never came across the recording again. Until tonight. What a terrific find! Many thanks for the chance to finally hear it!

  7. Ugh..sorry gents. There was obviously a problem with the Rapidshare link. (Though there was the Game Front alternative) It seems ok now (see above comment for link).

Carl is right, Cecil was very gracious at the end.

Brian, you may be thinking of Cecil's duets with Mary Lou Williams 'Embraced'

  8. I was always impressed by her willingness to embrace all sorts of music. This session with Cecil is a prime example. Much the same could be said of Mary Low Williams. Marian did a session with Paul Bley a few years ago as well. I don’t believe she ever got around to doing a show with Sun Ra though. Pity.

  10. Very sad loss, she was a wonderful lady. I have this in good quality in FLAC, got it from Dime I think. Happy to make it available somehow somewhere - any suggestions? I also have the programs with Bill Evans, Paul Bley, Matthew Shipp, Hiromi & one or two more. I see a number have just been reposted on Dime. Maybe check there first?

  20. Thank you so much, Andy and Bventure!

I taped this off the radio in New York, but my cassette quality was poor, and I didn't get the whole program.

It's so great to have the whole show, and in excellent sound!

  22. Thanks for the original post and for the FLAC upgrade by bventure.
I recorded this off air on cassette about 25 years ago but it's nice to now have it on CDR and not have to dig out my tape.
I found it dated as 1986 but also from Feb. 5 1987 don't know which is the actual record date.

  23. Hello bventure & the whole inconstant crew

That place is a true miracle! May you go on running along for ever!
I'm just frustrated: gamefront is not working in France. Is there anybody able to reup the flac's upon another site (zippyshare or another more common one)?
Many thks by advance: that show (and every set of Piano jazz I know) is terrific. What a lady!

  24. ANDY, you're right! It is Mary Lou Williams/Cecil Taylor's "Embraced" I saw in the bin all those years ago! I wonder how long I've had the two confused? So, I guess my search continues. Thanks for setting me straight.

And thanks bventure, for the FLAC.

  27. Part 2 Flac file is gone. Is there a way to repost that? The sound from part 1 is much superior than the MP3 I downloaded from somewhere else. Thanks!
