We had requests for some of the Baden-Baden Free Jazz Meetings recently, so I thought it opportune to check the archives for more of these meetings. What's offered here are three sets, the first of which are excerpts from the 1967 meeting, the second is also at the Süd-West Rundfunk studios in Baden-Baden, but a little bit previous to the actual meeting of that year, and the third is unrelated, made for Radio Bremen, but also from 1967.
Also opportune to put Joachim-Ernst Behrendt at the top, the producer of both the Baden-Baden sessions and a key figure in bringing jazz to the public in Germany. The Baden-Baden meetings were very much his idea and he kept them going for years. We'll get to the 1970 and 1977 meetings in a little while.

ReplyDeleteThanks very much. Fodder indeed!
ReplyDeleteWhen looking at session three here, the Bremen one, "Machine Gun" and "European Echoes" seem only one small step away. I'm familiar with all three sessions - highly recommended!! Sammler KK really rocked the collector-scene with these uploads back then - thanks man!
ReplyDeleteLooks tasty!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat - thanks
ReplyDeleteVery glad to hear these.

ReplyDeleteWonderful, wonderful sounds, many many thanks from Istanbul :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for this impressive post. I'd read that Evan Parker had met these others early on, but didn't know there was recorded evidence.
ReplyDeleteFrom an interview on his website:
Technically the first time I played with him (Brotzmann) was at the Baden Baden SudWestFunk [SWF] meeting, where I was very lucky, by the skin of my teeth really, because John Tchicai decided to take a holiday and not to work over the Christmas. At that point there was the determination to go wherever necessary whenever necessary in order to play. So Kowald had come to London in that period that you had documented [SUMMER 1967], and when he went home he said: "I'll try and set some things up". Then he said to me: "Come, I can't say for sure, but if there's a space in the car, it looks like there might be a possibility for you - I'm really working on it". At that time he was living in Antwerp. So when we got to Antwerp that night Kowald said: "Yes, it's on. Come down to Baden Baden with us and meet everybody." That was also very important, meeting Brötzmann and a lot of people - Don Cherry, Albert Mangelsdorf, Jeanne Lee, Marion Brown. Also Barre Phillips, who had already been in London. The history of my relationships with all these people - each one is a slightly different story, and different dates - to unravel it all and get it in the right sequence is quite complicated. Quite difficult.
any chance for a re-up?
ReplyDeleteI'm getting some cool stuff transferred so I would be happy to trade.
Hi Clifford - I'll do a re-up if kinabalu should not find some time for doing so...
ReplyDeleteOnx, I'll see to it.

ReplyDeleteBIG THX, Ernst!...
Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks for JEPA! Great!!
ReplyDeleteRelistened to the recordings with joy. But the first and second track from the second file (Irene Schweizer Trio) is corrupt (lots of static noise).
ReplyDeleteIs it only me or has everyone the same "distractions".
If not I would appreciate a re-up....
Yeah, I noticed the static more on the second track with Schweizer.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the drummer on the Marion Brown trio track is definitely John Stevens.
che fine ha fatto il blog sic vos non vobis di mel ? CHi sa qualcosa ?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tracks, especially Brown and Cherry, two faves.
