Nice One , Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteYes nice indeed, can't wait for the other sets
ReplyDeleteooh wow - what a bang on the first day of the year!! i'm very curious in hearing these 4 gentlemen "murdering" the classics...
ReplyDelete...nick, you're a regular at inconstant sol for quite a while now, now also as a poster?!? direct and live - great thing! :=)
lucky
Thanks, Lucky.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you.
Cannot wait to hear this one. What a great way to kick off the new year. Thank you for posting!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this surprise. I'm newly converted to A von S having just obtained 'Light Blue'; this sounds equally convincing and exciting. Great!
ReplyDeleteat first listening i thought this is a joke - hearing these 4 players playing absolutely straight jazz is odd. it's nicely played, but without any touch of what they're famous for - i guess they just had a great time playing the classics (i take back the "murdering" from above - they "praise" them as much as they're able to).
ReplyDeletei'm not convinced yet, will try a few more listens. you don't fool us, nick, don't you?!? ;)
lucky
There is a clue in the photograph, Lucky
ReplyDeletei guess you mean the liner notes, nick, right? i just read them, and it becomes obvious, although the music doesn't blow me away. to hear it live, dance to it, after an experimental concert - this must be a completely different way of hearing it. listening to it at home, on the pc, next to carl, schlippenbach's and johansson's other recordings - is not fully convincing for me, to be true.
ReplyDeletethe idea behind it i find great - too much avantgarde makes me sick, same like too much tradition or nostalgia... :) - balance is the key word.
cheers,
lucky
Thanks! This is fun.
ReplyDeleteWill you post the other sets too, at some point?
I meant the gigantic bunch of bananas!
ReplyDeletesorry for bothering you, nick, but i'm not english native speaker, so i don't get what you're up to - are the bananas for you a symbol of entertainment, or even of fake?!? i read the liner notes and now do understand a bit more behind this project, there's still a but...
ReplyDeletel:)
Entertainment - history - a little kitsch - playing by different rules (no bananas for FMP concerts) - decadence (bananas were not always cheap) - role-play (Sven in sunglasses) - festivities - invite some friends for drinks, snacks and talk over the music.
ReplyDeleteNick, you're not suggesting that these fine gentlemen have gone bananas?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure their repertoire could be quite suitable for Clärchens Ballhaus.

They are an enjoyable bar band, but I don't think they have any future in serious music.
ReplyDeletei couldn't disagree more , being a fan of pre bop, i feel they play these tunes with harmonic subtlety and real authenticity , this is superb !!would love to hear more.
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing wrong with avants doing trad stuff in my book, and even better if they put their own slant on it.
ReplyDeleteI posted a few years ago Aki Takases's Fats Waller project. Luckily, the mp3 archive is still active, so those who enjoyed this one are advised to hop over here
I was being facetious, for which I apologize. The visual setting may have been a little kitsch, but the music is played straight.
ReplyDeleteDo they Play, Yes we have no Bananas?
ReplyDeleteSotise, you'll have to wait until Set 12 is posted to find out if they did.
ReplyDeleteI remember that Kevin Ayers once released an album called "Bananamour" and a later one called "yes, we have no mananas". Not jazz, though. I posted Kevin Ayers and the Whole World with Lol Coxhill a few years ago. A very popular post, more than 1000 downloads.
ReplyDeleteBananamour is fabulous ,just listened to Joy of a toy and shooting at the moon the other day
ReplyDeletewonderful !!
