    He meant an awful lot to many of us here in NYC. There was great concern last summer when he missed the performance at the VisionFest. He was a big part of a special time and place.

    I was so pleased to find something of Ware's that I hadn't come across before. And then it slowly dawned on me what it signified.

    He's a huge loss, a mighty, mighty player.

    Sad loss. He was torrential. I first saw him in San Francisco’s much-loved Keystone Korner in 1976 with Cecil Taylor’s Unit. He blew the roof off. CT, Jimmy Lyons, Raphe Malik and Marc Edwards. Every one of them did. CT, wearing shades and dark cap over the eyes all night, fled the stage the instant the music finished, as if not wanting to be recognized. Jimmy Lyons smoked all night long, either the alto or cigarettes. The band played six nights running, Tuesday through Sunday. I went to four, couldn’t find the energy for the missing two. It was all such a tempest.

    The home footage of David improvising on the saxello and sopranino is entrancing. A lovely document. Such a colossal talent, such a gentle soul.
