VARA STUDIOS - HILVERSUM - BOOKER ERVIN QUARTET & VAN BERGEIJK QUARTET (1966/67)




Here are two shorter recordings from the 1960s made in the Vara Studios.
Recently I became (finally) aware that the Vara Studios in Hilversum (Netherlands) were the location for many  important recordings. I do not know anything about it - but maybe someone can shed some light on this topic. Also Gilius van Bergeijk is almost unknown to me. He was born in Den Haag on November 7, 1946. Today he is working as a composer but in the sixties and seventies he has worked as a Jazz musician. Peter Brötzmann and the glorious ICP were then stations in his development.
Booker Ervin needs no introduction...the same goes for Han Bennink.......

    Thanks for this. The VARA studios were part of the old AKN building in Hilversum (a small town outside Amsterdam which is still the heart of the Dutch broadcasting industry). It's a really lovely 1940s modernist building. I had the pleasure of looking through when I worked with its current owners the Veronica media group. Dutch radio and television gave good support to much Dutch jazz.

    In the old days Dutch public radio & tv were indeed good supporters of dutch jazz. Nowadays things are quite the opposite: no jazz, and certainly no dutch jazz on tv and on radio jazz it is expeled to wee hours.

    the problem with (Dutch) jazz on Dutch radio & TV is that the programmers mistake R&B, soul and funk for 'jazz'...

    A propos of nothing, I've noticed in the last two or three days that, as a Rapidshare free user, I'm getting much higher download speeds from them. Around 500 kbps. Much faster than the 30 kbps I was getting since last Xmas.

    Gilius van Bergeijk is a good friend of mine.

    He is still going strong, but works as a composer only since the early 80s.

    Albert Ayler's Hilversum Session was recorded there if I'm not mistaken.

    Though perhaps not a highly regarded album of Ayler's, I dig it.

    Reading the comments of 2012 and the one posted by Marcel who seems disappointed by the fact that Dutch radio doesn't care no more about jazz, I can say that it is going the same for radio France.
    if someone have more about Gilius van Bergeijk it would be very interesting to post, obviously he have made only one jazz album on his own, a duet with Luc
