ReplyDeleteTerrific, Don is and was the best.
ReplyDeleteA question, I have the following recording (bootleg),
pullen don - quartet
march 7th 1978
Milano, Capolinea
tt 77.52
AUD (B+)
Don Pullen: piano Chico Freeman: ss, ts, fl Fred Hopkins: bs Bobby Battle: dr
01- title 27:06 02 title - 39:39 03 title - 11:07
Did the group play twice within such a short time? Or is my date mistaken and this is one of your two sets (possibly trackt in a different way)?
@ trane
ReplyDeleteThe date (3.7) is wrong, in fact the quartet played a set on the evening of Friday, April 7, and two sets the following Sunday (the ones in my post).
At this point it would be interesting to have available the Friday set!
I got the (wrong) dates here
ReplyDeletehttp://www.donpullen.de/live.htm
I will try and check and see if the march date is one of your sets or maybe the missing friday (april 7th would then make sense) set or perhaps something completely different
@ trane
ReplyDeleteApril 7th has certainly sense as, the two dates (7/9), are reported in the article by Giuseppe Dalla Bona in "Musica Jazz" of June 1978. The group probably spent the Saturday (8) in the recording studio.
I may add to have heard and taped the same Quartet at the Bergamo Festival on March 17.

Well, I checked, the most probable and plausible 'solution' is that the march 7th performance is indeed the missing friday night set.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the Bergano concert!
Thanks. Adventurous sets. It would be nice to hear more if it finds it's way here at some point.
ReplyDeleteI thought it would be nice to share the by now 'famous' misdated friday night performance, and Riccardo agreed, so here you go

Great stuff, thanks! If there is interest I have the recording of the concert of 6 April from Basle, Switzerland. I am pretty sure that this date is correct as it is a radio broadcast and the date is mentioned by the MC!
ReplyDeleteWow, Thank You Riccardo, this is Fantastico!! The amazing Don Pullen was an under-recognized genius who finally started to get (more) *recognition* now that he is long gone--like so many of the true original pioneering jazz greats!!!
ReplyDeleteExcellent super clear/clarity sound quality!: you must have used open reel recorders as i do not hear any cuts in the music/tape flips! Bravo!
Any {good sounding} live Don Pullen recordings are treasures and these sets fit that description! --dandor
I just checked my archive: I could offer the following Don Pullen shows:
ReplyDeleteSolo
06/18/92 Boston Globe Jazz and Blues Festival
Quartet
10/??/77 Nancy Jazz Pulsations
04/06/78 Basle, Switzerland
Trio
06/20/90 Yoshi's CA
08/26/90 Saalfelden, AT
Afro-Brazilian Connection
05/05/92 Club Fasching
I'm all for the Don Pullen flood. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteThanks Riccardo and Trane for these treasures! The opening solo from the 9th is so beautiful that they can do no wrong after that as far as I am concerned! (the recording is a good one too - as others here have observed)
ReplyDelete@bernizz, Anonymous, and anyone else who can - I think I'm not the only one who would be delighted to see (and hear) more Don Pullen posts. How about that broadcast recording from April 6th?!
Interesting stuff - thanks for enlightening me!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!!! Always happy to hear more Don Pullen, especially the live stuff, not because it would necessarily be better than the studio, but because in his case it was so different and so little of it is available officially.
ReplyDeleteI have over 5000 CDs and Don Pullen is one of the few whose stuff I keep on buying automatically – and in additon to buying all there is I may download unreleased unofficial bits like these.
Thanks, thanks, thanks.

I seem to have found this slightly before the other night's show was posted in the comments so missed this (which is of course now gone).

Could you please re-post the Don Pullen concert from the Boston Globe Jazz and Blues Festival in 1992? I was at that concert and it was mesmerizing. He ended playing three encores and audience still wanted more.Truly an amazing evening of music.
ReplyDeleteis it possible to reup please? Thanks!
