MASAYUKI TAKAYANAGI "FREE FORM SUITE" (THREE BLIND MICE, 1972)

As my reservoir on Masahiko Togashi (deleted ones) comes almost to an end, I'll continue the japanese series with another great master.
As far as I know most recordings of Masayuki Takayanagi are available. I got this CD from a Company in Hamburg which sells tea. Let's have a mouthful.
"Free Form Suite" is a mixed bag insofar as there is a more "traditional" part - the first three tracks - and than a more powerful part called "Free Form Suite".
Not his most ferocious music - but listen for yourself.

In Germany there is an idiomatic expression which goes roughly ... "on one foot there is no good standing".

I found the second foot some days ago.

  2. Thanks much! All Takayanagi greedily consumed!

I was similarly let down by the first few tracks here. FFS itself, though, is an interesting listen.

There's not enough scholarship in English on the Japanese improv scene. Too often all "free" stuff gets broken down into "Eurocentric" and "Afrocentric" (to borrow terms from George Lewis, whose scholarship I generally adore) without accounting for the way Japanese work engages with scenes in the US, western (and, hey, eastern!) Europe.

  7. yeah WOW Onx , enjoyable, exhilarating if vERy tough stuff.

Takayanagi really goes out on a limb in the noisier free pieces ,formal coherence be damned!

Timbrally He makes even Sonny Sharrock & Rudolph Grey sound Timid.
