Dudu Pukwana and Zila - Live in Bracknell & Willisau

More Dudu Pukwana coming up. I have already posted the first record with Zila and the third will soon be up. On this record, he can draw on veteran Harry Beckett as well as then up-and-coming Django Bates. In my opinion, this one is better than the first, giving both Pukwana and Beckett the chance to stretch out on the fetured pieces, not unrelated to their being performed at jazz festivals in the UK and Switzerland. As I said before, possibly not as interesting from the pure jazz point of view as the 70s combo Spear, but these pieces swing pretty hard, enhanced by the vocal presence of Pinise Saul.

  1. This has been posted elsewhere as mp3s, so we'll stick to the flacs here. I would advise readers to go for the flacs as I'm quite satisfied with the sound quality of this record and its transferral to the digital format.

  2. Dudu Phukwana and the Spears(Quality LTJ-S 232, 1969) was available elsewhere recently for a short while but withdrawn, any re-appearance would be very welcome.

  4. I favour the Virgin released LP as his best, but I rate this as a close second.

  5. Whcih one? I believe both "In the Townships" and "Flute Music" were out on the Caroline subsidiary of Virgin. But both are indeed very good.

I have the final Zila recording from 1990, too, but just want to check its general availability before going ahead. If our readers find it difficult to get through normal channels, I will put it up here.
