Here is a performance of Gérard Grisey's
Les Espaces Acoustiques from the Munich Bienniale earlier this year. The piece has six parts, starting with a prologue for solo viola and moving to groupings for 7, 18, 33 and 84 musicians. Quite apart from the numerological aspects of these groupings, this is Grisey's 'laboratory' for explorations in sound and what music represents. As chords resonate and morph, so the mood of the music also changes, from 'serious' one minute to comical the next. (At a performance of
Partiels I was at last year, the audience was laughing out loud in the final moments). Its organic, flowing nature is quite the opposite of austere post-modernism - this is music that lives and breathes.
Part 1 (Prologue - Périodes - Partiels) (52.29)
Part 2 (Modulations - Transitoires - Epilogue) (42.16)
Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
Conductor - Stefan Asbury
Herkulessaal, Munich Bienniale - 2nd May, 2008 (and broadcast subsequently on Bayern 4's excellent Horizonte programme).

ReplyDeletethanks a lot, Tantris, for switching to a different diet.
ReplyDelete'can't wait for the GUO at Mulhouse recording.
thanks again.
Thank you so much for posting this! I first heard this piece just last year (on what I assume is the sole recording) and was mesmerized. I am hoping some orchestra brings the cycle to New York.
ReplyDeleteAnd PS, I've added your intriguing blog to my blogroll.
GREAT VERSION
ReplyDeletemuch much better than the one Asbury recorded for Kairos, he should have held out to release this one, it ranks with the one released by Accord

Thanks, but the links are apparently dead. A new upload would be great. Thanks in advance.
ReplyDeleteWould anyone like to re-post the FLAC for this...pretty please!!!
ReplyDeleteThe guy who posted it is no longer a contributor to this blog and I don't think I grabbed it at the time. Perhaps some others did?
ReplyDeleteHang on a second. Those links above in comment five are still working.

They have been tested and the pieces are playing as I type. Converted to mp3, but better than nothing, I should think.

ReplyDeleteI'm away for the next couple of weeks, and will see if I can locate the files when I'm back.
