There was a mention of this in the comments section and an apparent interest to have it posted, so here goes ...
Recorded live at Bloomsbury Theatre, Inaugural London Jazz Festival, London, May 22, 1993, this is a duo of Braxton on a variety of reeds and Crispell on piano. Crispell was in the 80s Braxton Quartet, but has since made a number of recordings under her own name, putting her in the top league of female pianists, of which there aren't too many.
I'm not famiiar with the individual tracks here, but perhaps the Braxton expertise may help out ...
This appears to be off a radio programme, but I have no information about which one and when. Most likely the BBC.
Posted on BigO and downloaded from there, including cover art. They do serve up the goodies, now and then (but you gotta be quick to catch 'em!)

Wonderful, thank you
ReplyDeleteA small correction, if I may. Let's take out the word "since". MC was making her own recordings before her 80's Braxton 4tet days.
ReplyDeleteAh, you're right. It looks like her own recordings go back to 1981. I suppose I only became aware of her through her more recent records for ECM.
ReplyDeletein fact kinabalu, you may want to check out labyrinths her 1987 live victo disc posted here almost a year ago.

Downloading it at the moment. I see that some of the earliest posts lack links. Any chance of having those reinstated?
ReplyDeleteA footnote which might be of interest to some - this Braxton / Crispell duo set was recorded on the same day as the Braxton / Evan Parker / Paul Rutherford "Trio London 1993" released on Leo 197.
ReplyDeletecrispell first played with braxton in '78, so i don't think it's unfair to suggest that her career as a leader postdates her association with him... though of course she didn't become a regular member of his band until later on.
ReplyDeleteNo it's not unfair, Cent. It's just incorrect.
ReplyDeletethanks for this kinabalu.
ReplyDeletei kicked myself for missing it.
which of the early posts are you interested in?
some of the links were either trolled, or simply faded through lack of downloads.
"Posted on BigO....(but you gotta be quick to catch 'em!" - very true!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this - appreciated.
I've always got a lot from Crispell, though haven't bought/heard anything in quite a while.
*This DVD* looks *most* interesting, with a fairly hilariously peeved "review" - the only one there.

I wasn't looking for that though - was looking to see if my 3 Crispells on Leo are in print or not, and to offer to up them if not available.
From the Leo site, be damned if I can tell..
They are Rhythms Hung in Undrawn Sky (solo), And Your Ivory Voice Sings (w/ Doug James- dr.), Qtt Improvisations Paris 1986.
Have some other bits and pieces, but in print I think. Though what happened to 'Music&Arts' label? Looks a bit scarce on the net...
I haven't looked hard at all, so if you're tempted to comment back googleisyourfriend, stay that hand! I'll check properly er.. soon.
Has anyone the Berlin 2000 radiobroadcast concert concert from Crispell with Peacock and Motion? The ECM recordings are beautiful.
ReplyDelete"just incorrect" - care to elaborate, g?
ReplyDeletecrispell did not lead a date of her own until 1981. her first recorded session was with braxton (1978) - and in 1980 she was playing in his quintet, a group which was not officially recorded. how exactly was she a leader before she played with braxton?
Simple, Cent. The misleading comment above said, " ... but has since made a number of recordings under her own name ... ". My point was simply that recordings under her own name, i.e. as session leader, in fact predated her regular membership of AB's 80's quartet, regardless of the fact that she had also played with him earlier.
ReplyDeleteit's not a "point of order" in that way, it's far more a question of perspective. crispell had experience of playing braxton's music, and of his leadership, some good time before she led her own dates - how do you know there was no direct influence or inspiration?
ReplyDeleteSotise,
ReplyDeletecertainly the Marion Brown one, but wouldn't mind the Tony Oxley and Sunny Murray ...
Actually, scrap that request, at least as far as Marion Brown is concerned. I did pick up a fine copy of that one in NY, and what's more, just to stay on topic, got to see the Marilyn Crispell Trio at the Village Vanguard, too!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the link is dead? Any hope to revive it?
ReplyDeletei will support the above request. the links r error. thanks
ReplyDeleteall those in favor of re-upping this - rise!
