All tracks are compositions ordered by the Süddeutsche Rundfunk to feature Joos and Konrad as composers and to give them the opportunity to perform with larger ensembles.
- on tracks 1 + 2 the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra and on tracks 3 + 4 the Erwin Lehn Orchestra, (which was the SDR's radio jazz orchestra at that time and included a lot of brilliant jazz musicians) - therefore they were also able to perform (besides their usual radio entertainment music business) in more avantgardistic contexts.

During the second half of the seventies and in the early eighties, Joseph Jarman and Famoudou Don Moye regularly teamed together in duet or in bigger groups who recorded albums like Egwu-Anwu, Black Paladin, Earth Passage Density or The magic triangle.

Here is a well recorded concert from this period, this time in duet following the recording published by India Navigation.

In the early days of this blog, Sotise posted a superbe album from L.D Levy who is not the most popular jazz musician… On this lp that you can find here

JANI CHRISTOU "LATE WORKS" (COLUMBIA, 1974)

Jani Christou was born at Heliopolis, N.E. of Cairo on January 9th, 1926, of Greek parents. He was educated at the English School in Alexandria, and began composing at an early age. In 1945 he travelled to England to study formal logic and philosophy at Kingās College, Cambridge under Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell (he attained an MA in philosophy in 1948). At the same time he studied music privately with H. F. Redlich, the distinguished musicologist and pupil of Alban Berg, and in 1949 travelled to Rome to study orchestration with F. Lavagnino. He also travelled widely in Europe, culminating for a short period in Zurich, where he met and attended lectures in psychology with Carl Jung....

Bought this LP while on vacation with my family in Greece. Strolling through Athens I discovered a vinyl shop. While browsing through the inventory I didn't find anything which sparked me.
Then I asked for Xenakis, Christou...and here it was behind the cashier - albeit quite expensive.
I already wanted to turn away when surprisingly my family urged me three times to buy this LP.
Astonished and a bit perplexed I obeyed to their wish. It turned out that it was and still is to my own best.

Soft Mountain - Soft Mountain - Hux Records 2003

After leaving Soft Machine, Elton Dean and Hugh Hopper tried to recreate groups in the same spirit like Soft Head or Soft Heap. All of these groups were interesting but none of them managed to reach the level of energy and creativity of Soft Machine Third. When I first listened to Soft Mountain I immediately felt that the energy of this band and its power was clearly close to the great era of Soft Machine even though the music is different. Tatsuya Yoshida and Hugh Hopper are particularly impressive during this powerful session.

 Yesterday I was quite surprised when I discovered two reissues on vinyl from a seminal FMP compilation and an LP where the music and the accompanying text is a wonderful big lie.
Responsible for outings is the label Song Cycle Records.

For 'Snapshot' the line-up does not read mouth-watering only but the music is actually very good and occasionally spectacular.

In August 1979, East German musicians were invited to perform a three-day festival in West Berlin. Billed as “Jazz Now,” this landmark meeting was recorded and initially released by Free Music Production. From stunning duos to challenging small-group performances, from large rave-ups to Mingus nods, Snap- shot” provides much more than that name suggests. It’s as complete a portrait of jazz in the GDR as you’re ever likely to find, and a moment in time that continues to reverberate — via these sounds — today

 And not at least we have Michael Snow's piece of vinyl from 1987 which contains an extraordinary collection of tracks “of rare music derived from threatened, obsolete, or now-extinct cultures from around the world” plus a text to put the recording into context.
But as mentioned above - all of this is made up of recordings (and 'anthropological insights') by Snow himself.  Great collection of aboriginal music from - well - Canada.
