Well almost complete; I had to junk some from the second set of the 1989 gig.  The cassette player picked up a nasty hum, I think because I’d decided to plug into a socket rather than run off batteries and I’d got the transformer too close to the recorder. In my mind the recording was a write-off, but now, twenty five years later, I discover there is an hour and a half of prime Mujician!  This gig was near the end of a tour of mostly art centres and after ‘concerts’ this was time to relax and put the comfy old ‘gig’ slippers on in the intimate, friendly and crowded Albert Inn – renowned as the place for jazz in Bristol. 

The 1993 gig has appeared here before, in two different postings.  So if you’ve had it before you won’t need it again.  I just thought I’d pull it all together here.

SOMMER / JOST - DuOh! "DIE DUNKLE WOLKE" (FISH MUSIC, 1987)

Update: Recently I've re-listened to this album. And I enjoyed it even more than a few years ago.
IMO it's a minor classic -

A meeting between the eastern and the western part of Germany. It was not the first one.
Already before 1973 Jost Gebers fom FMP brought musicians from West-Berlin to the City's eastern part. These meetings/concerts between musicians from the DDR and the "West" were at the beginning illegal.
A concert by the Irène Schweizer Quartet on October 1973 marked the beginning of official encounters. The relationship to the DDR administration remained somewhat fragile and demanded creative input especially from Jost Gebers.
It is safe to say that the reunion was already on it's way before anyone even imagined the german reunification.

This recording - made two years before the wall came down - is a superb example of this notion.
But luckily the music does offer a much broader view of sound - humour included.

It's not necessary to introduce Günter "Baby" Sommer. Ekkehard Jost is mostly known as the author of seminal books about European Jazz (among others).
By no means only a theoretician he is also an accomplished reedist with a preference for the low tones. An original musician who deserves a wider recognition.

His own label Fish Music has up to date 14 releases from which only the first three LPs are deleted.
The CDs are still available from himself.

His examination of folk music is singular insofar as the original feeling remains intact even when the music becomes "abstract". Clear structures but still some sense of wonder.

Another from number of still-not-yet-on-CD Stivín albums. This one is special for his collaboration with singer Mirka Křivánková (now mainly not musically active). Křivánková was singing on live occasions with these musicians, but album story is different. She recorded some solo voice improvisations in studio in 1982. Two years after Jiří Stivín used them as compositional material, adding his instruments and rhythm colleagues. Alan Vitouš is of course brother of famous bassist Miroslav. I don't have this vinyl, recordings comes somehow direcly from Mirka K., so included pics are from discogs.

Joe Harriott documentary, Jazz File, BBC Radio 3, October 2006

Perusing the comments, I noticed that Hum Dono, the record Joe Harriott made with Amancio D'Silva back in 1969, is now finally out again on cd and vinyl. We have posted it in the past, with a little help from friends across the Atlantic, so its rerelease calls for a celebration here on the blog.

I've selected to post a two-part documentary on Harriott origninally broadcast on Jazz File on BBC Radio 3 on 7 and 14 October 2006. The series which were given to artist profiles has in the meantime been discontinued. I got it on two cdrs from a contact at the BBC, so the sound quality is top notch. Presented by Soweto Kinch, we get to hear snips of his entire oeuvre from the 50s and up to the late 60s and many interviews with fellow musicians, acquaintances and biographers. It's a revelation to hear Joe Harriott's voice and l just love his uppercrust accent!

There is a subtext which shines through in Harriott's comments in that he was quite conscious of taking an indedenpent stance against the predominance of American jazz at the time. For him, it was quite important to demonstrate that there was more than one place for jazz which might indicate why he chose the UK which after all was further away from his native Jamaica than the US. He also became a victim of the gradual withering away of the live market for jazz in the early 70s which made a luminary such as Stan Tracey consider giving up his jazz career and taking a job as a postman!

For the sake of convenience, I've spliced the two parts into one for your listening pleasure. There seems to be a little bit missing right at the beginning of part 1, but not too distracting, I hope, so what else to say but enjoy!

We do this re-up because there has been a so called reissue of this LP.
Take a look at discogs.
To put it frankly: It is a bootleg - and of course our post is technically the same.
But we feel there's a crucial difference - we don't ask you for twenty bucks....
What's more - we are meanwhile quite sure that the music you would hear on the LP is taken from our previous share here at IS.

Another point which should be mentioned is that not only Abraxas/Doxy isn't acting right toward the musicians, but it is also directly trying to scam customers.
Pushing the reissue as a "First edition of 500 numbered copies in a deluxe gold laminated jacket" (https://www.deep.hu/catalog/ACV2038) or "Limited, numbered pressing – on clear vinyl!" (https://www.dustygroove.com/item/724167) clearly ammounts to trying to get people to assume the product is high end.
Does "clear vinyl" really matter when you're pressing something which has been unprofessionally transfered from an LP to a digital file back to an LP?
Mentioning the "deluxe" aspect of the release and forgetting to write about this side of things is rather interesting...

We decided to do a reup again. This time including scans of the insert/liner notes (see above) which is not a part of the bootleg LP.

Best thing instead of buying bootleg vinyl would be to download here and to buy one of Sonny's recent releases on Improvising Beings.

This short extract of a Fred Lyman interview suggests that this may not be exactly the case (courtesy of Ben Young and Marc Chaloin) : « ... mostly a jam-session [...] they were all in my studio, I don't know how they got these particular guys up there, it was probably Clifford Jordan got it together. And they just started to play and I started recording, and I played on it too, I played fluegelhorn on this track. And it turned out pretty good, [...] it was an example of what I liked to think music could be at that time. » According to Lyman, they picked up Don Cherry in the street…

Charles Tyler - Mid Western Drifter

I posted the Folly Fun Magic Music a little while ago and the one following, this one, was to be his last. In contrast to the former, here we're down to a trio, just sax, piano and bass, It' a low key affair, subdued, no flashes, a touch of melancholy to the proceedings. . All in all, a record of intimate beauty, even infinite beauty. We have a mix of standards, some select tunes from the Tyler repertoire, even my fave from the second ESP album, dedicated to Chris McGregor. Did they know each other or meet? Both had settled in France by the 1980s.

This record is a musical documention of a travelogue, so what better to cite the poem that starts off the record:

In my IMHO this is one of Vesala's best recordings - excellent and intense drumming!
Strong baritone from  Paakkunainen....Koskinen's trumpet!
Wonderful and joyful bass work from Hauta-aho...Pekka Pöyry's reeds are...Mircea Stan and his trombone...high wailing harmonies - snake-lines...clear articulation - no cliches....space even when playing heavy....enough praising...
A real gem - hope it will be re-issued soon - would be happy to delete the links and buy me a remastered CD....

Following on from some 1970s postings of Charles Tyler below, here we move right up to 1990-92, his final years in France where he had settled. On this recording, he is accompanied by a French crew of much younger age, probably thrilled to be in the company of a 60s legend.

Stylistically, this record is all over the place which is not necessarily a bad thing to these ears. Starting with a mellow jazzy rendering of Wagner, it moves on to Bach and then to country and western (!), sounding not unlike Bob Dylan round about John Wesley Harding time. Nowadays, this is known as "Americana". Tyler can do that, too.

Then it's on to European fok, Native Indian chants and even futuristic folk, but with a link to the past! The record rounds off with a duet with Santacruz which strikes me as a signpost of what was to follow on his next and final record. Some folly, lots of fun and and more than a touch of magic! This is great record of maturity, versatility and as Thom Jurek says in his Allmusic review, more than that, it walks on the edge of profundity.
