John Stevens - Chemistry

Here is a repost of a post back in 2009, due to a request in our comments section.

Led by John Stevens, this is a different mix from his chamber-like SME or his foray into jazz-rock fusion with Away (similarly to Trevor Watts' Amalgam). The accent here is on chemistry, finding a group of players who have not interacted much before, doing it on the spur and creating that live feeling and keeping in the rough edges; anything to avoid that smoothness. Although John had played with the others individually and in smaller groups before, the group as such was new to this adventure.

The legacy of Coleman is quite evident in these pieces, certainly in the lightness and rhythmic fluidity of Watts' playing, another Colemanian trait and one Watts was going to refine in the years to come. Warleigh inserts a grittier, earthier counterpart to Watts' flights of fancy. Wheeler juts in with some tight, jagged spurts on both the second and third tracks. Clyne leads in the first piece slowly and deliberately with the group gradually joining in and with Stevens holding down an airy, light and very elegant groove. While the first piece is tentative, the two following pieces are machine-gun charged. Both open with short, sharp statements played at a breakneck pace with Watts heading off into the first solo on the second piece and Warleigh on the third. Both Clyde and Stevens get to do short, succinct solos, only broken up by restatements of the theme. However, at the mid-point of the third and last piece, the urgency of the piece suddenly breaks off into an introspective, elegiac mood which might recall the chamber intimacy of the SME, though never getting as taut and abstract. With John Stevens, always expect the unexpected!

All in all, ultra-fine playing from all concerned, indicating that the chemistry was indeed there on the day or more precisely, during three hours of studio recordings in November 1975. This was made at the Riverside Studio, presumably in London, but released on the Berlin-based Vinyl label in 1977 and never rereleased on cd, as far as is known. Steve Lake provided detailed sleeve notes on the back cover of the record, which has been reproduced here and appended to the tracks.

Giorgio Buratti-(J.Byard, D.Richmond, B.Jones,E.Preston) A smooth day ...-Durium lp, MS A 77268-1971

A rare one by eclectic Italian Jazz and improvising bassist and later electro - acoustic composer Giorgio Buratti , heard here in an impromptu studio session with members of Charles Mingus's touring band at the time..
 An unexpectedly intense foray into total improvisation, rather similar in substance and perhaps inspired by Mingus's 1961 free-cut up Collaged piece 'Passions of a man' , similarly alternating rambunctious, abrupt explosive polytonal gospel romps with elided pointillistic textural abstraction.. .
....besides which the fun being had by all involved is palpable and infectious...and very clearly audible..almost relentlessly so!

Amazing !.. what a joy to hear the great Jaki Byard in completely free mode for an entire record  , his contribution is outrageously fluid ..and certainly among the busiest and most genuinely interactive i've ever heard him..

ALAN SILVA CELESTRIAL COMMUNICATION ORCHESTRA "DESERT MIRAGE" (IACP, 1982)

On this and the previous Alan Silva post, he is not playing himself but it's "his" music nonetheless.

These sprawling vistas - like flying and/or floating over vast sky- and landscapes. Immersed but somehow not attached.

On this LP the music has sometimes a dreamlike quality (see/hear "Desert Mirage") and au contraire to his LPs on BYG the music here has a more "structured" sound. Not that I would dislike "unstructured" sounds from Alan Silva or per se...

Maybe this only applies to non-drivers like myself, but have you ever been at a gig/concert when you know you have to leave by a certain time to catch the last train/bus and, as good as the music is, you’d like it to finish, but it doesn’t, it seems to go on forever, even when there was a natural obvious ending five minutes ago?  Well this gig wasn’t like that, not for me anyway. I was getting a lift from the wonderful girl who used to drive to most of the venues around England where I made the recordings I’ve been posting.  (Eternal thanks to her.) No, I was relaxed, knowing I could hear every last note, scrape and thrum.  But John Tilbury, on the other hand, needed to catch his train and left halfway through this second set.  Thus turning AMM into the Masters of Disorientation I suppose.

Thank you to the six people who kindly left a comment to set 1.  Your encouragement gives me a sense of purpose.

 

@Maready, Lou Gare was the opposite of a front-man.  He would stand, or walk around at the back of the rest of the group.  I only met him a few times but he came across as a very humble, gentle and thoroughly nice man.  It’s a shame we don’t hear more of him.  It’s well worth hearing the AMM albums made when it was just the duo of Prevost and Gare:  ‘At the Roundhouse’ (Anomalous Records) and ‘To Here and Back Again’ (Matchless Recordings).  Also his solo (tenor) album ‘No Strings Atttached’ (Matchless Recordings).  Obviously ALL the AMM albums are worth hearing.

This is a classic, needless to say. British improv; understated, chamber-like, light-footed, intimate, attentive, cohesive, whatever adjectives may apply. And a fine thing, all in all.

SUNNY MURRAY "SONNY'S TIME NOW" (JIHAD, 1965)

Some hours ago there was a request for this album - I believe it is OOP.
This post contains the title "The Lie" which was for the first time released on the Japanese LP re-edition. The package included a one-sided single which wasn't part of the original Jihad LP.
The CD contains both - single + LP.
What to say else about the music - it is a classic and it should appeal to everyone who digs f.e. ESP.
Soundwise it is a bit murky and sadly the bassists are best heard in the quieter parts.
But the intensity of the music will make up for those shortcomings and Mr. Murray IS a master of the drums.

When I got to hear this recording at a friends house (thank you A.) I immediately knew I had to obtain this extraordinary and marvelous composition (and playing!!) by Fred Van Hove.

Some days ago it arrived - and upon second hearing I wasn't disappointed - Au Contraire!

Hopefully Nato is preparing a proper reissue...

Trevor Watts Amalgam - Closer to You

This was discreetly slipped into the contributions section a while ago by Alex in Solex. I thought that was quite convenient, because it saved me the time it would take to digitize my own copy, so basically what I've done is to add track titles, convert the files from wav to flac and scan the front and back of the album covers. Nice work, too, if I may add, so thanks to Alex for the job.

This was, I believe, the third last album Trevor Watts did with his Amalgam group, The following, "Over the Rainbow" and "Wipe Out", added Keith Rowe on guitars and were interestingly a source of imspiration for the indie rock Sonic Youth group. After that, Trevor Watts headed in a more rhytmically complex direction with his Moiré Music concept, combining jazz with African-inspired percussion and even, as has been suggested, the rigorous composition technique of Philip Glass and other American minimalists. That compositional complexity was to some degree foreshadowed by the excellent "Cynosure" by the Trevor Watts String Ensemble a few years before (1976) and released on the Ogun label in 1978. The Ensemble was a much larger group than the trio on display here. This one runs the gamut from tight funk to the more spacious improvisation of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, with which Trevor  Watts was associated for many years. In fact, the very early Amalgam albums had John Stevens on drums and have been posted here before. This album reflects the individual personalities of the players, one coming from a jazz-improv background, one from soul and funk and one from rock and blues.This diversity shines through on this record and makes for an, shall we say, interesting amalgam. A very fine record all in all, I think and really quite accessible.
