Paul Bley Trio-Canada 1968

For an Australian friend...
A great Paul Bley trio session, put out by radio Canada international transcription service, recorded in Montreal in December 68, i believe this was Bley's last  entirely acoustic release from the sixties and for some time until ECM'S, Open to Love, last in a glorious sequence spanning ten or so indispensable records, and one of the few which has never made it to cd ..

Four great tunes by Annette Peacock , his wife at the time, with Mario Pavone's only stint in Bleys acoustic trio.
 For some inexplicable reason this album is not mentioned In the Paul Bley entry on the Jazz discographies project site.
this album's been posted as mp3's at lucky psychic hut , and may well still be available somewhere in that format.

Steve Lacy Three-The Lost Tracks from Capers,1979

I was pretty pissed off years ago when i bought the CD, New York capers and quirks, only to find that almost half the material had been left off including my favourite piece "the crunch" where Ronnie Boykins seems most inventive(and audible), i had given the scratchy old beige soft cover double lp away , because it sounded muddy, and i'd ordered the cd from a shop..
This reissue box edition from 1981 is a huge sonic improvement , on the first edition.
Boykins is not as audible as on the cd versions.. but otherwise the sound is great..
Anyone know why this material hasn't been reissued?

The Crunch is particularly great one of those  sprawling blow out monsters, like the thing, where Lacy stretches his extended technique to the limit.
Dennis Charles Beating out Melodic Martial tattoo like rhythms in unison with Lacy is a Joyous aural feast, a pity this trio didn't record more!

The great Helen Merrill's most challenging, outer worldly record ever, featuring loose, free  highly textured arrangements by Masahiko Sato and Peacock, recorded just 4 months before the epochal "Samadhi' by the trio...
This also features a touching version of Ellington's 'In a sentimental mood' which is so obviously Gary Peacock's very moving tribute to Jimmy Blanton... beautiful oh so beautiful, painfully so..

Only reissued on Cd in Japan and out of print to the best of my knowledge ..
This rip is taken from the early 70's Storyville LP ..

Helen Merrill is as far as i know still recording...and well worth supporting !

SPONTANEOUS MUSIC ENSEMBLE "UNRELEASED STUDIO RECORDINGS 1966 - 1968"

Soundwise these recordings are a bit muffled but the music's really excellent IMHO.
Maybe someone has a better version!?

The Double Trio track was recorded about two month before Brötzmann's 'Machine Gun' - makes for an interesting comparison.

Maybe one day it will see a proper release....

IAN BRIGHTON - A VOICE YOU LEFT BEHIND (SOUNDCLOUD, 2014)

Here is a wonderful piece of news and a treat for us all. Ian Brighton is recording again!

Ian has kindly emailed a few times and I have summarized some of his news.

Hi Nick,

At nearly 70 I have decided to come out of retirement, so to speak, and start recording again: I stopped playing in 1990 after finishing the FMR 001 album, Eleven Years From Yesterday. I could never play full time, as I had a family and required a steady income.  However I kept playing the guitar over the years developing my improvisation forms, but no opportunity to perform in public. Just before I retired from work five years ago, I spoke to Evan Parker, who said something along the lines, "You should come back and start playing again, most of your old friends are still living". After Lol Coxhill passed on, I started listening to our old tapes and realised that my playing has changed so much since those early recordings. Therefore I decided to start recording again and these days it is so much easier with Pro Tools.

I thought you maybe interested that I have released a track called, "A voice you left behind" on my Facebook page Ian Brighton Art and Music.

This is dedicated to Derek Bailey, my mentor and friend. Before the improvisation there is a short section with Derek being interviewed about peoples approach to listening to improvisation. When Derek passed away I felt a tremendous sense of loss, because I always considered him like a distant cousin, who I was close to for a while and thereafter knew I could always call him and it would be just like yesterday. Although he was a massive influence, I never sought out to copy him, as having small hands, I could not stretch my fingers over the fretboard to achieve the same chordal structures.

Next week, I hope to be releasing another one called "Chasing Lol". We played together many times, especially in duet form and it was always a wonderful challenge. In many ways he was a similar player to Sonny Rollins, in as much as his ideas were out of nowhere; sometimes gentle and then with great ferocity; the music being so varied. I will also use as a prelude to the improvisation a comment he made to me on stage at the 1979 Bracknell Jazz Festival, when a man in audience called out for A Night in Tunisia.

These tracks are part of a series of improvisations I will be releasing, where I think of the character as part of the improvisation, instead of just playing a solo performance comprising different aspects of my playing, where I am drawing from my library of sounds. 

Another track will be a conversation with myself, similar to Bill Evans. I am using acoustic and electric guitars in the way that he used acoustic and electric piano but instead of improvising on a particular tune I am using the same approach as per Derek and Lol; to focus on the character.

My son Paul Brighton aka Cuz Beats has recorded and produced the tracks. He is also featured on one of them, when he produces live electronic sound that I use as a background to another improvisation.

I've re-upped this treasured LP on re-listening to it after a concert of Mats Gustafsson and Agustí Fernández last Friday.
Mats told me that Swedish Azz is going to release a LP with Bengt Ernryd and Gilbert Holmström (>Mount Everest) this winter - this exciting prospect brought me back to the music posted here in December 2010....

David Murray's -Live at Peace Church, Revisited,.an appeal to Collectors,(and a few Recollections by Dan Serro, its producer)

Recently, in email Conversations with Dan Serro former Kharma label boss and also  producer of David Murray's wonderfully vivid, viscerally exiting, live at the Peace Church, released in 1991, he shared some recollections about the circumstances relating to its creation,
which with his permission i'd like to relay here in edited form...

Before i do that i'll state that i also want to unashamedly ,advertise the fact that D.Serro ,is interested in releasing a couple of very worthwhile projects,on lp, including a duo from the 70's by Byard Lancaster and Yusef Yancy..
a costly exercise that requires a lot of money... i told Dan that we have no hesitation , advertising the fact that he has new Sealed copies of Live at peace church for sale for twenty dollars U.S , about half the price that second hand copies sell for.
My appeal is to Vinyl Aficionados, who might want to buy or are considering buying peace church , to do so directly from Dan Serro, in the knowledge that  you will be helping fund further releases.

i asked Him about the circumstances of its recording and release, saying i felt it was the most vivid aural document he had produced!
here are a few ruminations by him

"It was something that happened by accident.   I had just gotten my recording equipment and a friend told me that i should record this concert at the Peace Church.  I did not know who David was at the time.
 He had just come from California and was new on the scene.   I asked if the musicians would mind and was told no. So i got a truck and took the equipment to the Church and set up.   Just 4 mikes and a small mixer with 4 inputs.
 Many years later i played the tape for a Japanese  custmer who had come in from Japan and was at my place buying records.
 By then David was famous and had a lot of records out.  the guy was a big Murray fan and he wanted me to put out the record.
 I had ran out of money for the records i had pt out on Kharma and told him and he said he would go partners with me on it.
 I contacted David and we made a deal (expensive) and then after paying David and the others i contacted the guy in Japan.
 The Japanese had just had a big stock market loss and he said he couldn't come up with the money.
 Since i had already paid David i could do nothing else but put the record out.
 Limited by contract to 1500 copies.
I agree that it is the best job of recording i ever did....    Don't know if maybe it was the Church that helped or just the way i had miked them but it came out fantastic.

Things happen in strange ways sometimes.   Like the Burton Greene record.   Keshavan was not supposed to be on that record.
He got up on stage while i was recording and i was afraid i would not have enough to put the record out.
It was supposed to be a solo piano record.It is my second favorite record of all of the ones i put out."

OK, so the band wasn’t actually called Mujician at this point.  But it soon would be.  Keith Tippett and Paul Dunmall had played a few gigs with Tony Levin and Chris Bolton at Tony’s Jazz Club Friday at the Bartons Arms in Birmingham.  Paul Rogers had played in Tenor Tonic with Dunmall and Levin and the Keith Tippett Sextet but had recently been away in America.  On his return Dunmall arranged some duet gigs and one of them in Cardiff added Tippett and Levin, advertised as the Paul Dunmall/Keith Tippett Quartet.  So this is really Mujician's very first gig and it’s fresh and exciting and utterly magical in its musical coming together.  Luckily Bruce was in Cardiff that night with his tape recorder – so it’s BIG THANKS to him for the opportunity to enjoy an hour or so of history in the making.

Mujician on Cuneiform

The Thing live at Kultur-Schranne, Dachau, 2014

I went to see The Thing a week or so back, always keen to catch them whenever they hit town (which isn't that often). Mads Gustafsson ceremonially annouced that they taken an abrupt new turn in music, going from barbecue jazz to Scandinavian avant garde schläger. They still don their Ruby's BBQ tea shirts, though, which has become their regular uniform over the years. If anyone wonders whether that place actually exists, well, it does, right there in Austin, Texas, which also happens to be Ingebright Haaker Flaten's place of residence. The gig coincided with a two-day Blastfest, a metal gathering, so the place was full of long-haired chaps with pointed beards and of chapettes, all dressed up in shades of black. It got me thinking that The Thing ought to fit right into a blastfest, but these metalists tend to be rather strict on genre boundaries. A conservate lot, if you ask me.

The Thing started out as a Don Cheery tribute project and they even did an album and a tour with Neneh Cherry, but from talking to band members, I got the impression that it was a one-off thing and not at all a future course. One may add that The Thing is also a kind of Albert Ayler tribute project, given that Ayler lived in Sweden in the early sixities and had a decisive influence on the early Scandinavian free jazz scene. Bengt "Frippe" Nordström is a link from those days and a player clearly inspiring the much younger Mads. But The Thing have also covered punk and indie bands of newer provenance.

I didn't bring any recording equipment as I don't have any, but searching the Dime site, I came across a live recording at the Kultur-Schranne in Dachau, just out of Munich. Checking the date, I saw it was a little less than a week prior to the gig here, so I suspect the repertoire was quite similar to what I've heard, including covers of Coltrane and Ellington!. They have a new album out called "Boot" which, of course, have quite differing meanings in English and German. As they were offering direct sales of "sheissplatten" (Mads), I picked up a rare one which I might post here in the near future.

This quintet of giants came to be as a consequence of Ralph Simon’s offer to Reggie Workman to record a CD for his label Postcards in 1993. The result is the brilliant "Summit Conference" (Postcards  POST1003), highly recommended and still in press.
This show was recorded almost two years later at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. I can neither find it in a bot list search nor apparently in blogland, so I assume it is uncirculated on the web. This is a remarkably fine audience (or perhaps, on stage) recording with a intimate and very concentrated atmosphere and no distracting noise at all.
On the CDR I received there were very short silent parts near the start and end of tracks 2 and 3 which are probably due to a transfer from a CDR with SBEs.
 I repaired this and retracked all tracks. Pitch is correct (I suppose this comes from a digital source).
 As the levels initially are very low on the original recording, I raised them a little (more so in the very low passages and less so towards the end).
 I also applied a tiny amount of compression to the really loud passages.
 As always, I did all processing in 24bit.

The closing stage announcement identifies track 5 as "Midnight River Crossing" and track 6 as "Breath".
 Both relevant discographers (Ronald Lyles in his Andrew Hill Discography and Rick Lopez in his Sam Rivers Sessionography) do so likewise (see below), but track 5 is clearly the same as Julian Priester's "Breath" on POST1003,
 so I assume that track 6 is "Midnight River Crossing" by Pheeroan akLaff.

There might be a splice in track 1 at 3:32:485. I removed a click there.

I only knew his solo CD from 2006. But to see and hear him in a live-setting was quite astonishing.

I have the sad obligation to announce the death of Graham L. Rogers.
Today I got a mail from his brother.
Graham - better known to most as glmlr - has died from cardio-vascular complications on December 21, 2013 in Athens.

His last contribution to IS was a copy of CT's "Praxis" LP he has send me in November last year.

I didn't know Graham very well.
But I shall miss him as a helpful friend and comrade in music.
