Wadada Leo Smith - What is Democracy?

What is Democracy? is the second part of Wadada Leo Smith's three-part Ten Freedom Summers, performed by his Golden Quartet and the Ligeti String Quartet over three nights at Café Oto in November 2013, as part of the London jazz festival.

Yes, the message is there, but this is dense, powerful music that delivers its message through elegant complexity. There is a propulsive force that reminds me of Mingus and Cecil Taylor, and Wadada seems to want to make reference to several voices of Miles Davis - I can hear mid-50s Miles to begin with, and Live-Evil later, and it is this changing voice that seems to successfully create the space for the string quartet in the later pieces. Wonderful stuff - let's hope that Radio 3 broadcast more, or that Café Oto release a recording of all three nights - the entire suite is however available as a studio recording (highly recommended).

Many thanks to Tom Philips who recorded this from Radio 3 in excellent quality, and also to Stefano for the artwork included.

BADEN BADEN NEW JAZZ MEETING 1975 "TEN YEARS GLOBE UNITY ORCHESTRA"

Here we have another installment of the Baden Baden Free Jazz Meetings.
This post of the concerts/rehearsals is not complete.
Several titles were released and are still available and therefore not included here.
You can find the missing titles: "Every Single One of Us is a Pearl," "Ruby, My Dear," and "Kunstmusik II" on Pearls (FMP 0380)  at destination-out.
"Marañao," "Composition 23B," Jahrmarkt," "Hannebüchen." and "The Forge" on Baden-Baden '75 (FMP CD 137). The CD is to my knowledge still in print although harder to obtain. Try it here f.e.

I'm indebted to Peter Losin for his detailed information regarding line-up and titles - I took the freedom to duplicate it here with some minor changes. (Miles Ahead)

Notes:

Some of the music from the Workshop portion of this set (discs 1-3) has been issued commercially: "Every Single One of Us is a Pearl," "Ruby, My Dear," and "Kunstmusik II" on Pearls (FMP 0380), and "Jahrmarkt" on Jahrmarkt/Local Fair (Po Torch PTR/JWD 2). These titles were recorded November 25-27 at the Südwestfunk Studios in Baden-Baden during the New Jazz Meeting dedicated to "Ten Years Globe Unity Orchestra."

For Part 2 of Kowald's "Jahrmarkt," the group is divided into six small groups throughout in the studio. From left to right in this recording:

Kowald (tuba), Schlippenbach (acc), Brötzmann (cl)
Parker (ss), Wheeler, Rutherford
Christmann, Niebergall, Lovens
Braxton
Mangelsdorff, Dudek (ts)
Rava, Carl (ts), Pilz

The issued version of "Jahrmarkt" is presented as a single performance but in fact -- because of the logistics of arranging musicians in groups around the studio -- it was recorded in three pieces.

Rutherford's "Hip Hymn No. 2" also involved complicated logistics. The musicians are arranged in four groups from left to right:

Braxton, Dudek, Parker, and Wheeler
Christmann and Brötzmann
Schlippenbach, Kowald, Niebergall, and Lovens
Rava, Carl, Pilz, and Mangelsdorff

In addition, Rutherford prepared a tape of the synthesizer part, and the group played on top of it.

Discs 4-5 were recorded during a public performance on November 28 at Kurfürstliches Schloss in Mainz.

PER-HENRIK WALLIN QUARTET "UMEÅ, 1978"

Hideo's request for a re-up of "The New Figaro" of the Per-Henrik Wallin Trio on Dragon Records helped me to remember another recording of this excellent musician.
Here we have another drummer - Erik Dahlbäck - who played a lot with Wallin (see here) throughout the late seventies and eighties.
And Torbjörn Hultcrantz is no stranger to regular followers of this blog - he played on Albert Ayler's LP "The First Recordings".
Also with Don Cherry, Dexter Gordon, Bernt Rosengren a.o. and in 1956 with Lars Gullin f.e.

Maybe someone can help with the sequence of the titles etc.

Lars-Göran Ulander, alto & soprano saxophone
Per-Henrik Wallin, piano
Torbjörn Hultcrantz, bass
Erik Dahlbäck, drums

According the announcer the following titles were played:

5. P? Swing (Wallin); 6. ?? (Dahlbäck); 7. Wuppertal (Wallin); 8. Journey To You (??); 9. ??(??)

Maybe tr.4 is 'My one and only love'?

Mal Waldron-Mal 81

Heres another, 80's Japanese only album by Mal Waldron, Beautiful in its way.
But ultimately a fairly routine mellow romp through a bunch of standards, isn't going to overly excite anyone who's into his most exploratory 1970-77, period.
All Standards ...

enjoy...
Love the back cover!...
