Stan Tracey-Louis Moholo-live in Novara Italy 2006

Here's another great Stan Tracey Broadcast , originally taped and shared by Dimer Survivor69 (many thanks to him), a duo with Louis Moholo , in beautiful crystal clear sound , again largely freely improvised, though i have a suspicion that the last piece is a blue notes tune, but i cant quite nail it !
A marvellous show which at times strongly evokes Moholo's Masterful FMP duo with Keith Tippett.
ENJOY!

Novara Jazz : Stan Tracey & Louis Moholo duo

Recorded at Auditorium Fratelli Oliveri del Conservatorio Guido Cantelli, Novara (Italy)
on sunday 30 April 2006, for Novara Jazz Festival 2006
Stan Tracey, pianoforte - Louis Moholo, drums

nine unannounced (and unknown to me) tracks, for a total of 58'56" see FFP for sequence

FM radio broadcast by "Il Cartellone - Radio 3 Suite Jazz", Radio 3 RAI [third channel of Italian national radio], on wednesday 9 August 2006, 22:00 hours.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Gunter Hampel and Jeanne Lee-Oasis 1979

Here's another great Horo record , a truly magnificent testament to the love Hampel and Lee  must have had for each other when they did this . To Me this is.another one of those records where one feels one is eavesdropping on an intimate ,private, at times sexually charged conversation ... it feels very much as though they are playing to and for each other ...Lee's scatting even sounds like love smitten baby talk  on a few tracks ..
Joyous , Wonderful Music, which doesn't deserve to languish in obscurity on  the musty shelves of 'specialist" collectors.

Stan Tracey-Mike Osborne Original 1972

Here's a further commemorative tribute to to the late great Stan Tracey, in a duo setting with equally legendary saxophonist Mike Osborne.. recorded in 1971 for Cadillac , Ogun also released a collaboration between the two, 'Tandem' in 1977.

This features Tracey in seldom heard completely free modality, something he returned to later in life in a  fabulous series of duets with Evan Parker , which are available(and whole heartedly recommended!) on Parker's Psi ,label .
This was transferred some years ago from a friends quite battered copy , the low res covers are from discogs.
no eq, compression or digi syrup employed, sweeten to taste!

Enjoy!

Stan Tracey at the BBC 1978 - 1982

To follow up our previous posting below, here is some truly vintage jazz to commemorate the passing away of Stan Tracey on 6 December at the age of 86. We have selected to hone in on recordings done for BBC radio in the late 70s and the early 80s. At this point he kept a regular quartet which sometimes was contracted into a trio and other times expanded into a sextet, octet and even a full orchestra. For this post, we have two quartets and a trio with a slight variation in line--up as his son Clark Tracey came to replace Bryan Spring on drums. And for a contrast, I've thrown in a batch of the full Orchestra doing a superb set of Ellington covers.

MAL WALDRON SEXTET "UNNA 1979"

This concert in northern Germany happened more than one year after "Moods" (on Enja) was recorded.
The line-up is quite similar as for this concert - only Manfrd Schoof plays for Terumasa Hino and <jimmy Woode for Cameron Brown.
All songs are also on the LP/CD - I recommend to buy the CD/LP if you do not have it yet.
For me it's a masterpiece.
You can listen to both recordings - a rare chance for examining the differences and similarities...

WALTER ZIMMERMANN "LOKALE MUSIK" (Edition Theater am Turm, 1977 - 1981)

Walter Zimmermann (born Schwabach, Germany, April 15, 1949) is a German composer associated with the Cologne School.

Zimmermann studied composition in Germany with Werner Heider and Mauricio Kagel, the theory of musical intelligence at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht (now located in The Hague), and computer music at Colgate University in New York.

Zimmerman's works are infused by a personal adaptation of minimal technique. Whereas many early American minimalist composers were influenced in their works by rock, jazz, and world musics, Zimmermann has drawn a great deal of inspiration from his Franconian heritage. A number of his works, particularly his groups of pieces known as Lokale Musik, use the traditional music of this area as source material. These works frequently begin with melodic material derived from Franconian folk songs, which are rearranged and transformed in novel ways.

In 1976, Zimmermann published a collection of interviews with American musicians and composers entitled Desert Plants: Conversations With 23 American Musicians. (source: Wikipedia)
See also his own webside - recommended readings...here.

If you like this music I urge you to buy CDs from him. Especially a new recording on Mode Records were parts of this LP are presented in new interpretations. Very fine version of "10 Fränkische Tänze" with two string quartets. One playing the composition presented here plus a quartet playing a drone.
Also another recent release on Maria de Alvears label World-Edition which has four works with greater ensembles/orchestra.

Lokale Musik - local music.
A kind of anti-"world-music" but sublimated, substituted, transformed and "transcended" as Walter Zimmermann has put it in the description of the four parts from "Leichte Tänze" (airy dances but also "easy").

Some rough translations/explanations by the custodian of the fountain :

Kärwamelodien - "Kärwa" means in franconian dialect church anniversary but also country/parish fair.

Wolkenorte - "Wolken" means clouds and "Orte" means place/location/site/scene/lieu.

Riuti: hard to translate - refers to the landscapes of wine cultivation.

Wüstungen und Rodungen - also hard to explain (for me) - a "Wüstung" refers to a settlement or an agraic area which was abandoned before the modern times (ca.16th century), but is still remembered in field-names, old charters/documents, in local oral tradition/lore.

"Rodungen" connotes to the clearing/uprooting of an area for farming purposes.
The word "Rodung" is also related to the term "ausrotten" - to extirpate or to eradicate.

Keuper: shell limestone - a geological formation and a form of soil which is characteristic for the franconian wine district.

Ländler: a slow dance in the beat of 3/4.

Phran + Topar: no clue at all on my side...

Streichglasspiel - an instrument made of glass which is (gently) bowed (also with the fingers).

Stille Tänze - silent dance(s).

Namenlose Zwiefache: "Namenlos" means simply nameless and "Zwiefache" is a fast south-german folk dance which alternates constantly between a spinning/rotating movement and a waltz-like dance.

And finally - "Der Tanz und der Schmerz" - dance and pain/sorrow.

Lokale Music is a landmark, not only as a remarkable body of music, but as a model of a composing as a project that connects the musical to the historical, ethnological, social and psychological, and one in which these connections are never musically trivial.

ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH NONET "KÖLN 1969"

Only 23 days later Schlippenbach recorded his LP "The Living Music".
Except Paker and Bailey the line-up was the same as for this broadcast. The actual LP "The Living Music" might be one of the most often re-issued recordings of Free Jazz.
First there was an edition on A.v.Schlippenbach's 'Quasar' imprint. Than the more widely distributed FMP 0100. A CD on John Corbett's Unheard Music Series. And finally a re-release on LP through Cien Fuegos in 2013.

Paul Rutherford, trombone
Peter Brötzmann, tenor & baritone saxophone
Evan Parker, soprano & tenor saxophone
Michel Pilz, bass clarinet, flute

Much better than the ECM release - at least to my ears.

Leo Brouwer – Guitarra (Areito LD-4189)

Leo Brouwer is one of the leading voices in modern Cuban guitar music. This is an early Cuban LP, with Brouwer playing – I guess it´s from the late 60s or early 70s (if you know better, please correct) – and before a tendon injury stopped his playing career.

The beautiful folk and dance rhythms draw me to much of the guitar music of Latin America, but it can often stray into sentimental territory. That´s the last thing you could say about the music on this LP. In Brouwer´s own ‘Elegy of the Dance’, the drumming of the fingers on the instrument is not just a dance rhythm, but is also the sound of a farmer drilling seeds in the field, and echoes many of the themes in Villa-Lobos´s first prelude for guitar. It is an understated, but concentrated and intense piece of music that rewards repeated listening.

Leo Brouwer – Guitarra (Areito LD-4189)

Carlos Fariñas – Prelúdio
José Ardévol – Sonata para Guitarra
Manuel Ponce – Sonatina Meridional
Leo Brouwer – Elogio de la Danza
Heitor Villa-Lobos – Estudio no. 7

For Cuban vinyl of this age, it sounds remarkably good, but I´m putting this up in 320 kbps mp3. Naxos have been doing a very good job in making this and other modern guitar work more available – here is a good place to jump in, and I´d recommend any of the Brouwer series.

By the way, there is a fantastic resource online - the blog of Fabio Zanon, containing an archive of his radio programmes documenting the history of Brazilan guitar. I can’t think of a better way to get to know much of this music. Fabio Zanon is also an exceptionally talented guitarist, whose recordings and performances are strongly recommended!

Ovary Lodge (Keith Tippett, Roy Babbington, Frank Perry)

Here is the first of the two Ovary Lodge records released, This was out on RCA in 1973 and rereleased on cd in 1999. I have the lp, but comparing it to the cd version, I would have to conclude that the background noise and pops/clicks are a little less noticeable on this version. One can hear that it is sourced from an lp, particularly in the quiet passages, of which there are many, indicating that the master tapes may have got lost in the mentime. The second Ovary Lodge came out on Ogun a few years later with Harry Miller replacing Roy Babbington and adding Julie Tippetts. That one is fairly easy to get  on cd, though the initial lp release is out of print. But as I understand, even the cd release of the first one may be hard to find.

This first one came two years after Tippett's mammoth Centipede ensemble with 50 plus players and one year after Tippett went to the other extreme with the closeted, chamber-like Blueprint with roughly the same small group of musicians featured here and Ovary Lodge is very much a follow-up to Blueprint. This new one was fully improvised, as Tppett informed us, and all acoustic with no electronics, as producer Robert Fripp added.

Reading some reviews, it seems quite apparent that for critics coming out of the jazz-prog-fusion intersection, this one was outside the comfort zone, especially for those who associated Tippett with his contribution to King Crimson records (with producer Robert Fripp being the obvious link). What we get here are two trio pieces at the beginning and end. In between there are a couple of piano solos and several pieces exploring space and silence, getting into some very quiet and intimate dynamics, even sounding vaguely meditative at points. This record, the Mutant Souds blog informs us, made the NWW (Nurse With Wound) list, a list which has been a sort of holy grail of obscure gems. The fellow at Allmusic finds this record to be challenging and one supposes, rewarding. Yes, I would think so, too.

Almeida Prado - Cartas Celestes (Estudio Eldorado 66.82.0352)

I hadn´t come across Almeida Prado except as a footnote in some books, but I began to hear a few interesting fragments of his music on Brazil´s Rádio Cultura FM, so when I´ve come across LPs of his music, I buy 'em. He has an interesting biography, studying in Paris with Olivier Messiaen and Nadia Boulanger before returning to an academic life in Brazil.

Here is a substantial cycle of his piano music – Cartas Celestes – that is on the surface a description of the night sky. The percussive sections clearly owe a debt to Boulez, but the deeper and pervasive influence is Messiaen - there are direct quotations from the Catalogue d´Oiseaux and Vingt Regards throughout. Just as the Catalogue is less a literal transcription of birdsong, and more an evocation and transformation of landscape, so the Cartas Celestes moves from description in Book 1 - nightfall, the milky way tracking across the sky, and then dawn - to deeper themes in the later books. The close of Book 5 and the opening of Book 6 are connected and really about time, and perhaps the fabric of space-time itself. Other sections evoke pulsing light and darkness. Some of the themes are very well done – particularly the entry of Orion the hunter in Book 3.

I don´t know much about the pianist, Fernando Lopes, and am hoping that I´ll find more of his recordings, as he´s clearly very capable. The recording is full and luminescent, and I hope the vinyl rip is OK – any tips on how to improve this are gratefully received. With a bit of luck, we´ll see increased interest in Almeida Prado´s music, and some more recordings – there seems to be very little available. Apparently the Estudio Eldorado label was once the main presence for contemporary and improvised music in Brazil, but folded a few years back. I´m trying to find out what else was released on this label. There doesn´t seem to be anything similar operating now, but it would be great to see this recording reissued as it´s a major piece in contemporary piano music that deserves to be much better known.

Nelson Freire-Plays Heitor Villa Lobos- Telefunken LP , Sat,22547

As a warm welcome back to Tantris and small coda to his post, heres a magnificent, passionate recital by Nelson Freire as a young man, delivering a vivid set of some of Villa Lobos's most challenging  and often percussive piano music , including the best version i've ever heard of the highly dissonant early Rudepoema!
Enjoy!!
