JAYNE CORTEZ AND THE FIRESPITTERS – MAINTAIN CONTROL (BOLA PRESS, 1986)

I was preparing this post for a request from May 2012, when I found, sadly, that Jayne Cortez died on 28 December 2012. A powerful poet, both in writing and performance, and a civil rights activist, Jayne released numerous books and albums. Her first album as leader was with Richard Davis on bass (Celebrations and Solitudes, Strata-East). Many later albums were written with her band, The Firespitters, produced with her son, Denardo Coleman, and featured leading free jazz and African musicians.

Rex Stewart and his Dixielanders-(Live in Boston 1953)Featuring Herbie Nichols !!!

Now for Some serious Fun!!!....
heres a nicely recorded document of some stomping Dixieland revival, those who like Aki Takase's Wonderful Enja discs of pre war Jazz ,will love this....I certainly do!

the real Surprise is Herbie Nichols , who despite various stories about how depressed he was at having to make his Living playing in Dixieland revival groups (where incidentally he made the acquaintance of both Steve Lacy and Roswell Rudd)
his playing here is fresh, and he sounds, (as does the entire band)like he's having a wail of a time!!

The great trumpeter Rex Stewart is best known for his stint of a decade or so with Duke Ellington's Orchestra , (1934-45), later in life he toured and recorded with Norman Granz's JATP, and there after recorded prolifically under his own name ,with the Ellingtonians
and a great many dixieland revival outfits such as this, under the names..the feet warmers, the Dixielanders. etc..also becoming a Jazz historian, critic and Lecturer.

Clarinetist Albert Nicholas of Creole descent was a veritable New Orleans legend having started his career in 1910,with King Oliver ,Buddy Petit, and Manuel Perez.

Perhaps its some form of retroactive wishful thinking/Selective Memory ,but i have vague recollections of reading an anecdotal report years ago in some book or other, about A.Nicholas and Don Byas ,at the club Montmartre Copenhagen night after night in the early sixties admiringly watching Albert Ayler
not only Recognizing his mastery, but saying they had always wanted to play as freely as that!

Its not hard to see why ,indeed listening to Ayler's recordings of Spirituals and all the stunning Hallucinatory marching band hybrid tunes , one imagines he would have fit right in...

Many of the tunes on this document are taken at an exhilarating break neck tempo, at times threatening to fall apart as they lope over some imaginary precipice, Herbie Nichols is extraordinary playing Ragtime style syncopated Melodies with the right hand and walking bass lines with the left,
occasionally spicing it up by accenting with odd mildly dissonant stabs.. though of course not to the extent one finds on his own blue note sessions 2 years later.

this is obviously originally an edited radio broadcast , probably unauthorized as many live sessions of this vintage, released on Musidisc seem to have been, America records which put out so many great free jazz lp's was itself a subsidiary of Musidisc.

at a cursory glance (a few pages of google) there doesn't appear to be much by way of a mention let alone detailed info regarding this record...

ps
Although i now see t(having checked the booklet to the H.Nichols Mosaic lp box) that this was actually released on the Jazztone label, probably as a series of  10 inch singles.

DIDIER LEVALLET OCTET "SCOOP" (IN & OUT, 1982/83)

After I heard Nick's LP of  Didier Levallet he has shared in March 2012 with us I was looking for another recording from him.
Some weeks ago I found it and two days ago I gave it a proper listen.

At least the first track (theme) has impressions from Anthony Braxton's groups ca. 1975 - but the recording is all its own. Tony Oxley is sadly too low in the mix mostly when the whole group is playing. One can hear him f.e. much better in a duo part with Malfatti. Especially the solos spots from Steve Lacy and Tony Coe have touched me upon the the first time listening.
But it is a very enjoyable album in its entirety.

Jon Jang - Jang

Following our earlier postings of United Front and George Sams, here is another musician who was to become an important part of the Asian Improv scene, Jon Jang. Of Chinese extraction, his contribution has been one of Americanizing Chinese folk melodies and to make visible the experience of being an immigrant with attachments to two different communities on opposite sides of the Pacific. As such, his work is part of a distinct West Coast scene where the links to the Asian continent are stronger than elsewhere than in the US, with the possible exception of other major towns on the American continent. The Asian Improv scene and record label is a concrete manifestation of a story that deserves wider recognition. The handcuffs on the front cover are symbolic of restrictions on Chinese immigration, in particular the adoption of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 which was in force until 1943 and only completely repealed in 1965 with the Immigration and Naturalization Act which abolished the old system of national quotas.

This was his debut release on the RPM label which also released both of the United Front records we have posted earlier. The Asian influence may not be as strong as on later releases. What's here is a quite diverse selection of tunes, some live piano solo performances ranging from contemporary classical to standards to spirituals, one is a straight-laced jazz guitar - piano duet and two are really United Front tunes with piano and guitar augmentation. I'm not sure if Jang is even on the opening piece. All in all, a debut release that is very promising, if somewhat lacking in artistic direction.

Thanks to Arcturus for supplying the digital files. I've put in an order for the second release by Jang on RPM, "Are you Chinese or Charlie Chan".  It'll be interesting to see how it compares with this one. As of writing, I've no idea. As far as I know, these records are long out of print and only obtainable on the second hand market.

Attila Zoller-Masahiko Satoh, A Path through Haze 1971-MPS

In a completely different vein , heres a beautiful MPS session from 1971, featuring legendary post bop guitarist Atilla Zoller, Harmonically Challenging and at times tonally ambiguous ,though relatively straight ahead with lots of delightful free wheeling interplay,by Satoh and Zoller.

All in all rather reminiscent of  the material performed by a sensational mid sixties band led by pianist Don Friedman, that recorded a couple of albums for Prestige
the best of which ,"Metamorphoses" happens to be among my favorite records...(available on CD and well worth checking out)

To my knowledge this hasn't been issued on CD outside of Japan , unaccountably given its superb quality!... it has been around in mp3's which perhaps can still be found around the blogosphere.

this is ripped from a very clean copy , made by Teichiku in the early 70's

Masahiko Satoh-'Yun' Solo Piano Vol2-1976

Here's another, superb solo piano lp, I know absolutely nothing about the circumstances surrounding this recording ,what i do know is that ive always considered Masahiko Satoh to be one of the
most distinctive , authentic Japanese Jazz pianists , a superb improviser whatever the Context.

This was the second in an early series of solo recordings from the 70's...

its Dense , and certainly to these ears Satoh seems to submit to and absorb the influence of Cecil Taylor(something i havent heard before on albums under his name) .. that said there is also THAT distinctive spaciousness which seems inherent to most Japanese free jazz of its day.

Pretty Sure though not absolutely Certain that this is not currently available , i welcome correction on that score..

Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, 1975

CD Air Mail Archive AIRAC-1115 (Japan, 2005)

This gentle and delicate collection is one of a few Julie's works, incorporating both songcraft and jazz / free improvisation. For further exploration in this field, I would like to suggest her appearance on Carla Bley's Tropic Appetites (Watt 1974) and more recent Nostalgia 77 Sessions featuring Keith & Julie Tippett (Tru Thoughts 2oo9). Despite being reissued on cd by Blueprint (1999) and Disconforme (2ooo) labels, Sunset Glow remains unavailable for long years. I believe this album may be a good article for reissue specialists Esoteric Recordings, who is actually going to release first two Keith Tippett Group albums with their usual care about mastering and packaging.

Soko Steidle live at Natt Jazz, Bergen 2012

While we're doing jazz in Bergen, this is a collection of three videos recorded in late May this year during the Nattjazz festival in Bergen. Soko Steidle is a Berlin-based combo given to free improvisation and housing ultra-fine front line jazzers in Rudi Mahall (again) and Henrik Walsdorff with Jan Roder and Oliver Steidle, the leader.

These chaps have three cds out so far, the two most recent ones on Jazz Werkstatt, which you are hereby advised to run out and get. This was uploaded by Steidle, but obviously not recorded by him as he was playing, except for the first sequence which has them heading down Vetrlidsalmenningen and along Vågsbunnen with Walsdorff in a wheelchair(!). Practical jokers, eh? I always make a point of catching them whenever they are in town and so also on this occasion., being seated a little bit to the right of the stage. Keep an eye out for some superb Mahall leg twitching and Walsdorffian bohemian chic. A sure sense of sartorial elegance all around.

The Deciders live in Bergen November 2012

DecidersII from kinabalu on Vimeo.

A little more home-made video from yours truly. This combo played at the USF in Bergen as part of the autumn programme of the Bergen Jazz Forum. Put together by the bassist Ole Morten Vågan, it has a fine sampling of some of Europe's finest, Rudi Mahall and Axel Dörner from Germany (Globe Unity Orchestra, Monk's Casino and Die Entäuschung), Fredrik Ljungkvist from Sweden (Atomic), Jon Fält from Sweden (Bobo Stensson) and the leader, Ole Morten Vågan from Norway.

They did their first recording in chronological order, just as the tunes appear on the cd, which by the way is just out on Jazzland. This video jumps in at the extra number, composed by Vågan and hence called Extravaganza. Geddit? Thought so. Lots of humour in this music, lots of quirky changes and lotsa fun for those who were there.

The Deciders live at USF, Bergen, Norway, 9 November 2011

RS download caps

There seems to be a worry in recent comments that RapidShare links have disappeared. Actually, they haven't. RS has unilaterally imposed a cap of 30 gb downloads per day on paid accounts and one - 1 - gb per day on free accounts. So if files are not accessible, it means that the download cap has been exceeded for that day. Downloaders are advised to try again the next day or until the files are again accessible. We don't like it a bit, but that's the way the ball bounces with this file server business. As they say, sorry for any inconvenience caused, but don't blame us, please.

Michael Smith, ‎– Totality,Red Record – VPA 118,1974

For onxi, heres Michael J.Smith's 1974 solo lp for RED!

Smiths Early work ,was hugely idiosyncratic and Ambitious, and we here at IS love it  feeling that it has been unjustly eclipsed.
, This one though very good is perhaps a little low key, rather introspective and slightly meandering in over all tone by comparison to the group sessions we have previously posted...

Here we have a leisurely stroll through a couple of bare bones ballads and a few originals , featuring Smiths own unique, often stark variations on standard tunes , treated in a way which t is similar in many respects to the free floating way an Andrew Hill, a Howard Riley or a Paul Bley  handle a tune like angel eyes.

there is an unsettling rather frayed romanticism at play here, bitter sweet and  fractured.
Angel eyes is a stand out performance , its a tune i love ,which like Nature Boy, has a mysterioso , slightly ironic under tone, perhaps  prefiguring some profoundly unsettling pathos hovering just beneath the surface ripples..of our fragile ,shaky  albeit painstakingly constructed & ultimately delusional senses of self.

sadly at present there appears to be only one recording featuring Smith as a (co)Leader currently available
A wonderfully intense duo with Steve Lacy, Sidelines which can be bought direct from the source here

A1-Tender Are Your Eyes
A2-Jazz Ballett For Patricia
A3-All I Need Is You
B1-Angel Eyes
B2-And Then ... I Died
B3-Your Voice Speaks (1 Over Track)

ENJOY!!

ps...this is pretty much a straight transfer , with the volume jacked up and light declicking in a few places
there is a little surface jitter, and rumble , i  initially tried de rumbling, but wasnt happy with the resultant musical loss , so...ive left it as is

Jon Irabagon Trio w/Barry Altschul in Moers 2011

Jon Irabagon Trio
June 11, 2011
Moers Festival Festivaltent, Moers, Germany

Jon Irabagon - saxophone
Peter Brendler - bass
Barry Altschul - drums

This is a take on the standard "Three Little Words", covered by Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and others. This is a 33-minute exercise in invention, energy and incredible stamina, most of it given to a continuous solo by Jon. An even more extreme variation of the same can be found on his recent "Foxy" where Sonny Rollins' "Doxy" is literally given a full cd treatment.

A riveting performance, to say the least. This one is posted here with Jon's approval, so here we go:

  Three Little Words by kinabalu

Jon has just launched his own label, Irabbagast Records with two brand new releases, so readers are advised to seek them out. In my own language, rabbagast means something like wild man which may be true of his playing at times, but not true of his own personality. A very pleasant guy and a fan of my home town, so what more can you wish?

Jon Irabagon in Bergen 2012

Here is a video recording featuring the excellent sax player Jon Irabagon. This was the final tune in a three-set performance at Dyvekes Vinkkjeller in downtown Bergen, arranged by Evans Jazz Club, recorded Friday 19 October during a brief tour of Western Norway. The line-up is

Jon Irabagon - alto sax
Norvald Dahl - piano
Axel Grieg - bass
Nils Drønen - drums

They did a bunch of self-penned tunes, but also some fine covers, as the one selected here, "Resolution" off John Coltrane's seminal "A Love Supreme". Jon's been regularly in town over the last few years, playing in different constellations, some local as on this night, but also visiting with Mostly Other People Do The Killing, a quartet which takes an unorthodox view of genre distinctions and which tends to name their tunes after small towns in Pennsylvania. Jon is similarly laissez faire about jazz dogma, playing inside or outside the mainstream as it suits him.

.... *++* #''''' ,.,.$"§$§"!))! - dig?!  However - Sotise has certainly hit the spot - IMHO.
....a somewhat shaky session - at least soundwise. Not that the sound of the recording is bad - but the spatial arrangement seems (deliberately?) a bit `*+&!%/&!/
Wether this is already a fetish I can't say - but I like the music...although it is NOT my favourite one - at all!

As always - decide for yourself....leave a trace.

Otomo Yoshihide Trio (+Itaru Oki)- Maison de la culture du Japon a Paris Sep 27th 2008

Taking on board certain points raised in email exchanges/ critiques ,
that we are too focused on the old, somewhat anally fixated on excavating the obscure past ,through endlessly fetishizing vinyl objects which are the ever present talismen of socially retarded middle class white males, and their attendant painfully self conscious intellectual pretensions....(to the detriment and exclusion of the here and now , the fresh , new vibrant and important)

in that spirit here is a concert, i like very much by the Otomo Yoshide trio, a stripped down version of his phenomenal  new Jazz quartet/quintet , (with Veteran trumpteter Itaru Oki as special guest on one piece only)..

PS
I first became aware of Yoshihide through the uniquely eclectic, post Modern Noise rock of 'Ground Zero' in the early 90's, and have been a fan ever since..
Yoshihide has gone on to numerous projects , many such as Filament the unique electro acoustic improv group, with sachiko M and Yoshimitsu Ichiraku, have abandoned known formal, structural and instrumental conventions, using sine wave generators, empty samplers and no input mixing boards
to create light subtly nuanced complex pulsating interlocking drones
...
Yoshihide is also a/(THE)contemporary monster Free Jazz guitarist , surpassing in ferocity and frenetically inventive energy such obvious role models as Masayuki Takayanagi and Sonny Sharrock ..

a note to anyone who likes this, there are many available releases of Yoshihide's  currently available
this is a great place to check out items and to buy from

Other great examples of Yoshihide playing shit hot Guitar in a 'free jazz',idiom are the collaborations with the Thing (Shinjuku Crawl is killer!!!) ,on smalltown supersound, and the Amazing, O.Y,New jazz Quartet Live in Lisbon on Cleanfeed,

Masahiko Togashi-Gary Peacock-Masahiko Satoh-Wave, 1986

A small contribution to the Celebration of Masahiko Togashi's great oeuvre
A warm reunion, Gary Peacock , hooking up again with Old Friends, Togashi &Satoh, having spent the early 70's in Japan as a student of George Ohsawa, founder of the the Macrobiotic Diet.
Peacock recorded prolifically during that sojourn including several albums with  Togashi notably the profoundly beautiful Voices (Nippon Columbia 1971) and  with Satoh(Samahdi, Far East 1971)

This Appears to be out of print at source, a thorough internet check reveals that there are but a few copies available through Amazon, at well over the Hundred Dollar mark, with only one purporting to be 'New' at 40 or so dollars , hard to know for certain ,I am open to correction on the above point..
beautiful stuff Enjoy!!

PS .. the availability of Peacock's records is Commensurate with his stature, a first choice recommendation for anyone wanting to explore his records under his own name would be 'Voice from the past' an atmospheric session Featuring Stanko and Garbarek  from 1982 on ECM

As for Masahiko Satoh , One cant recommend strongly enough, the Hugely Potent "Yatagarasu' ,a trio with Broetzmann , and Moriyama, on the NOT TWO label
And the Magnificent, 'Signature' with Joelle Leandre , and Yuji Takahashi on RED TOUCAN

Clear Frame on BBC Jazz on Three 2005

Here's one of Lol Coxhill's later collaborations, Clear Frame, a quartet given to free improvisation and broadcast on BBC Radio 3's Jazz on Three. Thanks to JD for taping this concert and providing the info below.

CLEAR FRAME in session

Recorded by the BBC and broadcast on March 4, 2005

CHARLES HEYWARD - drums
ORPHY ROBINSON - percussion, vibes, steel pans, thumb piano, talking drum, shakers & bells, electronics

2. The Way We Weren't
3. Improv
4. Improv

Jazz on 3 presents an exclusively recorded session by British quartet Clear Frame. The group, made up of ex-Soft-Machine bassist, Hugh Hopper, Charles Hayward on drums, Orphy Robinson on percussion and steel drums, and saxophonist, Lol Coxhill, held their first major performance at the London Jazz Festival in November 2004).

As the name suggests, Clear Frame begin each session with a blank canvas, using their considerable collective experience to work off each other and build a truly organic piece. As Orphy Robinson puts it, "expect the unexpected."

Hopper and Hayward add a fusionist element, Robinson adds colour and Coxhill adds himself. Somewhat of  a latter-day Soft Machine feel to this. Robert Wyatt was supposed to partake, playing cornet, but I can't hear any evidence of that on these pieces.

John Tchicai with Strings

This was discreetly slipped into the comments section in response to a request, but I think it deserves front page treatment. The title might hint at a string quartet or something even larger such as a symphony orchestra, but the closest you get to strings here are guitar, piano and harpsichord (and various samples). A somewhat curious and intriguing item in the Tchicai discography. Serene and sacral soundscapes; wistful; spectres of wide openness; church-like; hymns; heavenly or perhaps heaven-bounnd and a poem recited by Tchicai right at the end. A fitting epitaph of sorts. Unusual, but delightful.

Tracks:

1. Lied
2. Test-Piece 1
3. Cross Ness
4. Hymn
5. Solemn
6. Formalism
7. Test-Piece 2
8. Lullaby
9. These Pink Roses (words by Steve Dalachinsky)

Recorded in London in 2005

John Tchicai: bass clarinet, alto sax and voice
John Coxon: electric guitar, piano, harpsichord, samples, cymbals, bowls
Ashley Wales: Samples, trumpet, bass drum, steel bowls, percussion, bowed cymbal
Mark Sanders: drums and percussion on tracks 2, 4 and 5

The two chaps accompanying Tchicai made up the drum-and-bass outfit Springheel Jack before venturing into freer terrain. This one appears to be out of print, but other items on the Treader label can be found here:

Thanks to Robert for supplying this one.
