For onxi, heres Michael J.Smith's 1974 solo lp for RED!

Smiths Early work ,was hugely idiosyncratic and Ambitious, and we here at IS love it  feeling that it has been unjustly eclipsed.

, This one though very good is perhaps a little low key, rather introspective and slightly meandering in over all tone by comparison to the group sessions we have previously posted...

Here we have a leisurely stroll through a couple of bare bones ballads and a few originals , featuring Smiths own unique, often stark variations on standard tunes , treated in a way which t is similar in many respects to the free floating way an Andrew Hill, a Howard Riley or a Paul Bley  handle a tune like angel eyes.

there is an unsettling rather frayed romanticism at play here, bitter sweet and  fractured.

Angel eyes is a stand out performance , its a tune i love ,which like Nature Boy, has a mysterioso , slightly ironic under tone,perhaps  prefiguring some profoundly unsettling pathos hovering just beneath the surface ripples..of our fragile ,shaky  albeit painstakingly constructed & ultimately delusional senses of self. 

sadly at present there appears to be only one recording featuring Smith as a (co)Leader currently available

ROLF LIEBERMANN - GEORGE GRUNTZ "LES ECHANGES" (PHILIPS, 1962)

Rolf Liebermann composed this piece for the Swiss Expo (National exhibition) 1964. Scored for 156 machines - amongst which one can find 16 typewriters, 18 calculator machines, 8 accounting machines, 12 office perforators, 10 caisses enregistreuses, 8 humidificateurs-colleurs, 8 tele-scripteurs, 2 metronomes, 4 bells of signalisation, 2 entrance door gongs, 10 claxons, 16 telephones, 40 experimental signal receptors,1 fork lift, a duplicator and a monte-charge.
Rolf Liebermann was also the head of the main music section of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) from 1957 to 1959. In this function he was responsible for instigating the famous NDR Jazzworkshops. His most popular work might be his Concerto for Jazz Band and Symphony Orchestra which was premiered by Hans Rosebaud in Donaueschingen in 1954.

This is a take on the standard "Three Little Words", covered by Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and others. This is a 33-minute exercise in invention, energy and incredible stamina, most of it given to a continuous solo by Jon. An even more extreme variation of the same can be found on his recent "Foxy" where Sonny Rollins' "Doxy" is literally given a full cd treatment.

A riveting performance, to say the least. This one is posted here with Jon's approval, so here we go:

Jon has just launched his own label, Irabbagast Records with two brand new releases, so readers are advised to seek them out. In my own language, rabbagast means something like wild man which may be true of his playing at times, but not true of his own personality. A very pleasant guy and a fan of my home town, so what more can you wish?

Here is a video recording featuring the excellent sax player Jon Irabagon. This was the final tune in a three-set performance at Dyvekes Vinkkjeller in downtown Bergen, arranged by Evans Jazz Club, recorded Friday 19 October during a brief tour of Western Norway. The line-up is

They did a bunch of self-penned tunes, but also some fine covers, as the one selected here, "Resolution" off John Coltrane's seminal "A Love Supreme". Jon's been regularly in town over the last few years, playing in different constellations, some local as on this night, but also visiting with Mostly Other People Do The Killing, a quartet which takes an unorthodox view of genre distinctions and which tends to name their tunes after small towns in Pennsylvania. Jon is similarly laissez faire about jazz dogma, playing inside or outside the mainstream as it suits him.

.... *++* #''''' ,.,.$"§$§"!))! - dig?!  However - Sotise has certainly hit the spot - IMHO.
....a somewhat shaky session - at least soundwise. Not that the sound of the recording is bad - but the spatial arrangement seems (deliberately?) a bit `*+&!%/&!/
Wether this is already a fetish I can't say - but I like the music...although it is NOT my favourite one - at all!

As always - decide for yourself....leave a trace.

that we are too focused on the old, somewhat anally fixated on excavating the obscure past ,through endlessly fetishizing vinyl objects which are the ever present talismen of socially retarded middle class white males,and their attendant painfully self conscious intellectual pretensions....(to the detriment and exclusion of the here and now , the fresh , new vibrant and important)

I first became aware of Yoshihide through the uniquely eclectic,post Modern Noise rock of 'Ground Zero' in the early 90's, and have been a fan ever since..
Yoshihide has gone on to numerous projects , many such as Filament the unique electro acoustic improv group, with sachiko M and Yoshimitsu Ichiraku, have abandoned known formal,structural and instrumental conventions, using sine wave generators, empty samplers and no input mixing boards
to create light subtly nuanced complex pulsating interlocking drones
...
Yoshihide is also a/(THE)contemporary monster Free Jazz guitarist , surpassing in ferocity and frenetically inventive energy such obvious role models as Masayuki Takayanagi and Sonny Sharrock ..

a note to anyone who likes this, there are many available releases of Yoshihide's  currently available

A small contribution to the Celebration of Masahiko Togashi's great oeuvre
A warm reunion, Gary Peacock , hooking up again with Old Friends, Togashi &Satoh, having spent the early 70's in Japan as a student of George Ohsawa, founder of the the Macrobiotic Diet.
Peacock recorded prolifically during that sojourn including several albums with  Togashi notably the profoundly beautiful Voices (Nippon Columbia 1971) and  with Satoh(Samahdi, Far East 1971)

This Appears to be out of print at source, a thorough internet check reveals that there are but a few copies available through Amazon, at well over the Hundred Dollar mark, with only one purporting to be 'New' at 40 or so dollars , hard to know for certain ,I am open to correction on the above point..

PS .. the availability of Peacock's records is Commensurate with his stature, a first choice recommendation for anyone wanting to explore his records under his own name would be 'Voice from the past' an atmospheric session Featuring Stanko and Garbarek  from 1982 on ECM

Jazz on 3 presents an exclusively recorded session by British quartet Clear Frame. The group, made up of ex-Soft-Machine bassist, Hugh Hopper, Charles Hayward on drums, Orphy Robinson on percussion and steel drums, and saxophonist, Lol Coxhill, held their first major performance at the London Jazz Festival in November 2004).

 As the name suggests, Clear Frame begin each session with a blank canvas, using their considerable collective experience to work off each other and build a truly organic piece. As Orphy Robinson puts it, "expect the unexpected."

Hopper and Hayward add a fusionist element, Robinson adds colour and Coxhill adds himself. Somewhat of  a latter-day Soft Machine feel to this. Robert Wyatt was supposed to partake, playing cornet, but I can't hear any evidence of that on these pieces.

John Tchicai with Strings

This was discreetly slipped into the comments section in response to a request, but I think it deserves front page treatment. The title might hint at a string quartet or something even larger such as a symphony orchestra, but the closest you get to strings here are guitar, piano and harpsichord (and various samples). A somewhat curious and intriguing item in the Tchicai discography. Serene and sacral soundscapes; wistful; spectres of wide openness; church-like; hymns; heavenly or perhaps heaven-bounnd and a poem recited by Tchicai right at the end. A fitting epitaph of sorts. Unusual, but delightful.

Here are two shorter recordings from the 1960s made in the Vara Studios.
Recently I became (finally) aware that the Vara Studios in Hilversum (Netherlands) were the location for many  important recordings. I do not know anything about it - but maybe someone can shed some light on this topic. Also Gilius van Bergeijk is almost unknown to me. He was born in Den Haag on November 7, 1946. Today he is working as a composer but in the sixties and seventies he has worked as a Jazz musician. Peter Brötzmann and the glorious ICP were then stations in his development.
Booker Ervin needs no introduction...the same goes for Han Bennink.......

George Sams - Nomadic Winds

Following up earlier postings of the first two albums by United Front as well as Riccardo's posting of their set  at Moers in 1979, here is a solo album by George Sams, the trumpeter of the group. The title track was also featured on their second album "Ohm - Unit of Resistance" and the live set. New here is India Cooke on violin, Andre St. James on electric bass and Abdul Waahid on percussion. Anthony Brown joined UF by the time of their second album and George Sams assumes piano duties on the title track.

Perhaps not as swinging and boisterous as the United Front albums. I sense more of a subdued and wistful ambience on this record, possibly having to do with the presence of the violin. Sams engages in tortuous sounds on the track of the same name (not unlike Lester Bowie), supplies yearning piano chords on the title track and mixes trumpet in with the chamber group feel on the final track with light percussion added, hinting at worlds and continents beyond the American west coast. All in all, a beautiful listen, I thought.

On a very, very sad note

 I have just received the very sad news from fellow blogger Igor that our dear Riccardo Beduschi passed away last Tuesday. The cause of death was a heart attack. Igor received an email from Riccardo's friend Ilario Rozen which I'd like to quote in extenso:

 "Hi Igor,unfortunately our friend Riccardo died because of an infarct on last Tuesday. Inconstant sol is his creature too and I think he must be remembered on our blog. He is a real friend and a real jazzman. 

Unfortunately I can write just a comment, so if you could write a post on the top of the blog to give this bad news as soon as possible, it'll be a special present to honor his memory. I'm very very sad for this news, and I hope all the blog will participate to our bereavement."

Igor handed me the task as I'm one of the admins of this blog.

So, on behalf of Onxidlib, Sotise, Wallofsound and other contributors to the blog over the years, I'd like to record my deep appreciation of Riccardo's unique offerings. He made his own recordings, many dating back to the 1970s, and he was very much active right up to the last days, travelling to the Saalfelden festival and recording the Mary Halvorson Quintet which was posted here recently. He promised more in the near future, but alas, that may never come to light.

As we are based in different countries, even on different continents, I did not know Riccardo personally, so there is not much I can say. I would, however, like to express my deep condolences to Riccardo's relatives and closest and to all others who knew him.

I would also like to ask followers of the blog who have enjoyed his many contributions over the last few years to record their appreciation and to honour his memory in the best way they can. Comments are free.

May he rest in peace.

Update: Ilario has kindly provided me with this picture which I thought was very fitting. It depicts a group of jazz fans at the Moers festival in 1979. Riccardo is on the upper right, carrying a recording device in a shoulder bag, looking serious and very focused. A man with a mission in the middle of field work. The second on the left in the bottom row is Luigi Zanon, whose photos Riccardo would occasionally use to illustrate his posts. I understand that some of the others in the picture are also no longer with us.

And as regulars may have noticed, one of Riccardo's last posts was the United Front at the Moers festival in 1979.

WILLEM BREUKER ORCHESTRA/QUINTET "CONTEMPORARY JAZZ FROM HOLLAND - LITANY FOR THE 14TH OF JUNE, 1966" (RELAX)

This is Willem Breuker's first LP under his own name and also one of the earliest recordings of European Free Jazz. Already in this early stage of the socalled "European emancipation" we have not only a small combo but already compositions for a large ensemble. The achievement is quite differrent to Alex von Schlippenbach's Globe Unity (here and here) from the same year.
